Install MiKTeX for Linux

Please beware that MiKTeX for Linux is still in an experimental stage. Please read the
roadmap (/kb/roadmap-2-9) to learn more about the MiKTeX for Linux milestones.

MiKTeX is now available for selected Linux distributions.

What you get

The MiKTeX installation package simply consists of executables and man pages.

When you have installed MiKTeX, you can choose your options:

upgrade to a basic (or even complete) TeX distribution by running the MiKTeX
package manager
process your TeX projects and let MiKTeX install missing files on-the-fly
attach existing TEXMF root directories to the MiKTeX search path

MiKTeX for Linux will coexist with an existing TeX distribution (you might have to
adjust PATH ).

How to install MiKTeX

Ubuntu 16.04, Linux Mint 18 or higher (64-bit)
You need to first register the repository which contains the MiKTeX installation
package(s):

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --re

cv-keys D6BC243565B2087BC3F897C9277A7293F59E4889
echo "deb http://miktex.org/download/ubuntu xenial universe" |
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/miktex.list
sudo apt-get update

Then you can install MiKTeX:

sudo apt-get install miktex
