LESSON TITLE: Healthy and Unhealthy Food

Background Information:
The students are adult ESL students, aged from 21 to 60 years old, who come from a variety of
backgrounds. Most of them are from Arab states. Arabic is their mother language. They have
differing goals for learning English. Some are in the ESL program to work toward a college
degree. Some students are just working to improve English language competency for careers
they already have, the needs of their daily lives in the U.S.. Most of them are living with family.
For some elder students, their children can help them to improve English.
Last week, they learned common words about food, drink, cooking equipment, measurement
and containers. They also did a presentation about their food journal. Last week, we focused on
simple past tense. Although they have learnt simple past tense last semester, they still make
some simple mistakes in their journals and presentation.

Target Vocabularies:
Nutrient, calorie, healthy, unhealthy, additive

Warm Up Activity: 5 minutes


At the beginning of the class, I will review grammar( simple present, present continuous and
simple past tense) and vocabularies by asking the following questions:
 What do you usually eat for lunch? What does he/she eat for lunch?
I usually eat … for lunch.  He/She eats …
 What is he eating now?
He is eating …
 What did you eat yesterday? What did he/she eat yesterday?
I ate … He/She ate…

Learn New Words: 15 minutes


1.Nutrient: nourishes our bodies.
2.Calorie: a unit of energy.
3.Healthy: something is good for you.
Unhealthy: something is bad for you. (un-negative prefix)
Review and learn prefix and suffix:
Prefix: added in front of a word
Suffix: added at the end of the word
Negative prefix: dis-, un-, in-, im-
4.Additive: something added to enhance food taste.

Mind Map: 15 minutes


Food: fast food, fried food, processed food, fattening food.
Drink: water, juice, coffee, tea, milk, soda.
Meat: white meat and red meat.

Activity:
Healthy Recipe: 10 minutes
Write a recipe about your yesterday breakfast, lunch or dinner;
Use the words we learnt today;
Use simple past tense and past continuous tense;
Tell whether the recipe is healthy or not.
