Day: (Day 6)

Objectives:
 List and describe the three main parts of the U.S. Constitution (Preamble, Articles,
and Amendments). (DOK 1)
 Demonstrate understanding of the Preamble by summarizing it and doing a visual
representation of it. (DOK 3)

Materials:
projector, power point, journal, white board, binder, pen or pencil, poster boards, old magazines
and newspapers, scissors, tape, glue, markers, plastic chips, dark colored bag, rubric for grading

Opening (Set): 5 minutes

Write the following question on the white board: What do you know about the U.S. Constitution
based on your own prior knowledge? Give students 2-3 minutes to write their responses in their
journals. Call on several students to read their responses aloud. Discuss.

Today we are going to be talking about the Constitution and you will learn about the three main
parts of it.

Learning Task (Procedures): 50 Minutes

A. Get out your binders. We are going to talk about the parts of the Constitution while we
look at a power point and you will be taking notes.
B. Slide 1: Preamble
C. Slide 2: Articles
D. Slide 3: Amendments
E. Now you will be doing an art project to help you better understand the meaning of the
Preamble. You will divide into groups by drawing a colored chip out of this bag. All of
the people who get a certain color will work together. Move around so you are sitting
with your group. Give each student a copy of the handout. Your group’s work will be
evaluated using this rubric. Go over rubric briefly.
F. Handout: Preamble Visual Assignment
Each group will look through magazines and newspapers to find images that represent the
values and goals of the Preamble then place them on a poster in a creative manner to
make a visual display. The main concepts are:
 Form a more perfect Union
 Establish Justice
 Insure Domestic Tranquility
 Provide for the Common Defense
 Promote the General Welfare
 Secure the Blessings of Liberty
Each group will complete and turn in one poster. Every student must turn in a question
sheet with answers. (Indicator 3) (Indicator 2 Art)
G. Display the posters on the wall in the hallway beside the classroom door.
Closure: 3 Minutes

How many main parts are there in the Constitution? How many Articles/Amendments?
Discuss. Remember that we will have a comprehensive test this Friday over what we have
covered in the unit. Also, your Founding Fathers paper is due on that day. You have
plenty of time if you space it out and don’t wait until the last minute. Does anyone have a
question?

Differentiated Instruction:
Enrichment: What will you do to challenge students? Advanced students will memorize
the Preamble.
Intervention: Students in need of intervention will work with advanced students during
the poster activity.
Accommodation (Students in Special Education with IEP): What will you do
accommodate students? The IEP accommodations for each student will be implemented
as written in the IEP such as extra time, shorter assignments, etc. These students will be
monitored more closely during class and extra assistance given if needed.
