Dreams (English Department – Morning Assembly Speech) 10.3.

09

Good morning Principal, teachers, and fellow schoolmates. I am Kwok Yee Lam from Class 4D.

Today, I am going to share with you something about dreams.

Do you know what is dream exactly? Dreams are sequence of images, sounds and feelings

experienced while sleeping. They are strongly associated with rapid eye movement sleep. The

contents and biological purposes of dreams are not fully understood, though they have been a topic

of speculation and interest throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is known as

oneirology.

Why do we dream? There are many hypotheses about the function of dreams. For example, during

the night, there may be many external stimuli irritating the senses, but the mind interprets the

stimulus and makes it a part of a dream in order to ensure continued sleep. However, the mind will

awake the people if they are in danger or if trained to respond to certain sounds, such as a baby

crying. Some said dreams are like the cleaning-up operations of computers when they are off-line,

removing parasitic nodes and other "junk" from the mind during sleep. Dreams also create new

ideas through the generation of random thought mutations. Some of these may be rejected by the

mind as useless, while others may be seen as valuable and retained. But, I believe that, what you

think will lead to what you dream. Isn’t it?

In the past, dreams were historically used for healing as well as for guidance or divine inspiration.

Some Native American tribes used vision quests as a rite of passage, fasting and praying until an

anticipated guiding dream was received, to be shared with the rest of the tribe upon their return.

Nowadays, some psychologists use a method called ‘hypnogenesis’ to make people dream and to

help them from suffering mental disorder.

Although there has been many studies investigating dreams, we only know little about it. So, try to

dream tonight and know more about dreams. Thank you!

Counselling and Guidance Team Speech

Good morning principal, teachers and fellow schoolmates,

I am Ip Ki Yam of class 6S, the assistant prefect of the counselling and guidance team. Schoolmates,
have you ever helped a blind person cross the road? Or have you ever helped an old lady pack her
things up, when she accidentally dropped her belongings?

Actually, we are the fortunate one. We have a healthy body, and we are able to do many daily works
by ourselves. However, a lot of people are less fortunate. They may get some defects and illnesses,
in which they need others’ care and help.

I remembered, once, I participated in a voluntary service, which I have visited an elderly home.
Many of them had some disabilities. I found that sometimes they are too embarrassed to seek help
from someone else because in the past, they were as strong as we are now. Therefore I decided to
step up to her, an old lady. I chatted with her, and she told me a lot about her difficult experience in
her life, how she went through troubles and how she became disabled. I was touched by her
struggles throughout her life. I was greatly impressed to find that many people, although they look
weak, poor or disabled, they have strived their best to maintain their health and to keep their life as
happy as they can. At the same time, I was ashamed that in the past, I did so little to improve myself.
After the chat, the old lady felt very happy and thanked me with a smile.

Schoolmates, do you remember the theme of the Counselling and Guidance team this year, “To
Build a school campus without strangers”? Have you ever put your effort to love and care for the
others? Recently, I heard some cases of bullying in our school. Have you ever see your fellow
schoolmates laughing at the others’ weaknesses or being laughed at by the others? Do you know
that “laughing at others” is also a form of bullying? Do you how it feels when someone is being
bullied? Apart from outside the school, it is also important to build a loving and caring school
environment. When you see a bully case happening, will you show your care and love by trying to
stop the bully, or reporting the case to teachers? It is important to maintain a peaceful and harmony
school environment. The school prefects are willing to assist our schoolmates if they need our help,
and to protect our schoolmates if they have any problems.

From now on, when we see anyone wandering inside the school or on the street, don’t be shy and
give our helping hands to them immediately. When we take the initiative to help the needy, not only
their problem is solved, but also they will feel our love and care! They can feel warm and we learn
how to help. Let’s try our best to help the others. Thank You.
