Multiplexing
Multiplexing is a method by which multiple signals or data streams are
combined into one signal and transported over a shared medium.

Demultiplexing is the opposite of multiplexing. It is a method by
which multiple signals or data streams are extracted from one signal
and restored to their original medium.

• The OC3IF polls the interface modules for data at a set sample interval
• This interval is called the SI
• The SI can be set to 1 ms or 10 ms
• After receiving the SI signal, each module transfers its accumulated
data to the OC3CIF module based upon slot location (slot 0 first etc.)

Main Components
Beyond housing user modules, the AL4304 chassis has three main
components that allow for proper operation of the system.

How to install and power on module
1. Do not handle module with power cord plugged in

2. Make sure that power supply switch is in the off position
3. If needed, remove blank panel for power supply on chassis
4. Slide module into chassis on slide rails
5. Firmly press into backplane
6. Screw in the four retention screws
7. Plug in AC power into IEC connector
8. Turn on power switch

2. Remove AC power cord from IEC connector
3. Unscrew the four retention screws
4. Press down ejector handle until module releases from backplane

Modules – OC3CIF (2041)
The OC3CIF module provides an interface that is compatible with a

standard telco OC3 network
• OC3 Packetizer / Depacketizer
• Fiber-optic transmitter/receiver for AL4304 MUX/DEMUX system
• Integrates Multiplexer and Demultiplexer on single module
• Packetizes data for multiplexing
• Depacketizes data for demultiplexing
• Provides up to 122 Mbps of user bandwidth on both TX and RX
• Compatible with OC3 concentrator/switch
• Single mode ST fiber optic connector

Configuration / Settings

Configuration / Settings – XPORT Rate
Range: 1 Mbps to 122 Mbps

• Bandwidth on OC3 line reserved for multiplexed user data. This
should be set to 122 for point-to-point fiber links. If transmitting to a
concatenator it should be set above needed bandwidth

Configuration / Settings – Bandwidth Used
Value 1% to 100%
• Percent of available OC3 bandwidth taken up by user data. This is the
XPORT rate divided by 122 Mbps.

Configuration / Settings - VPATHID
Range: 0x01 to 0xFF
• Virtual Path ID. A hexadecimal value that would be used if connecting
to an external ATM switch/concatonator for routing the signal. If on a
point-to-point fiber link, this is not used.

Configuration / Settings – SI SOURCE
Values: LOCAL, RMT
• Establishes the source of the system sample timing. This should be
set to LOCAL.

Configuration / Settings – SI Period
Values: 1 ms, 10 ms
• This determines the system sample rate of the chassis for the data it is
transmitting
• 1 ms is recommended to minimize latency
• 10 ms is recommended to maximize bandwidth

Values: OK, LOS

• Indicates the status of the optical input signal
• OK indicates that optical power is seen on the input
• LOS indicates that there is no optical input power found

Configuration / Settings - SYNC
Values: LOCK, SERCH, HW ERR

• Indicates the status if the input demultiplexing circuitry
• LOCK indicated that the OC3CIF has locked to the incoming data
• SEARCH indicates that the OC3CIF is not able to lock to the incoming
data
• HW ERR indicates that the communication between the processor and
hardware has been lost.

Configuration / Settings - Overflow
Values: NONE, PACK, DEPAK

• Indicates an overflow condition on the packetizer or depacketizer
• NONE indicates no loss due to bandwidth limitations
• PACK indicates that the packetizer has too much data to transport
• DEPAK indicates that the depacketizer is receiving too much data to
ingest to the demultipexing modules

Configuration / Settings – Sequence Errors
Range: 0 to 65,535
• Indicates the number of count errors in the received data. This should
not increment if the link is running error free.
• If this counter is incrementing, it indicates that errors are being
received by the depacketizer from the fiber link

Configuration / Settings – CRC Errors
Range: 0 to 65,535
• Indicates the number of CRC errors in the received data. This
should not increment if the link is running error free.
• If this counter is incrementing, it indicates that errors are being
received by the depacketizer from the fiber link

Configuration / Settings – Clear Button
• When pressed, the Sequence Errors and CRC Errors fields will
reset to 0

PCM (RS-422) dual channel input module
• Two pairs of data/clock input to multiplex into the AL4304 MUX system
• For each of the two channels
• Operates rate
• 1 kbps to 40 Mbps (10 ms SI)
• 3.5 kbps to 40 Mbps (1 ms SI)
• Triax connectors for data and clock signals
• Center pin positive (+) signal
• Middle ring negative (-) signal
• Shell ground
• 120 Ohm termination across + and – input
• Packetizes data for multiplexing at SI rate
• Separate Channel IDs for independent routing

• Enables or Disables the input channel to the Multiplexer
• Enabled allows that channel to deliver its data to the multiplexing
module (OC3CIF)
• Disabled prevents the channel from delivering its data to the
multiplexing module (OC3CIF)

Range 0x000 to 0x7FF

• Sets the channel ID for the channel
• Places a tag on this channel’s data packets that allows it to be
identified by a demultiplexing module to recreate the data
• All Channel IDs must be unique on the multiplexing side

Range 0 to 40000000
• Displays the measured input clock for the channel

Values: Active, Idle, HwERR

• Displays the module status for the channel
• Active indicates that the channel is receiving a clock on its input
• Idle means that the channel is not receiving a clock on its input
• HwERR means that the software is not able to communicate with the

• Two pairs of data/clock output demultiplexed from the AL4304 system
• For each of the two channels

• 1 kbps to 40 Mbps (10 ms SI)
• 3.5 kbps to 40 Mbps (1 ms SI)

• Displays the rate of the data that the Channel ID is capturing,
reconstructing, and outputting on its connector.

• Displays the channel status
• Active indicates the module is reconstructing data
• Idle indicates that the channel does not recognize a data source at its
configured Channel ID
• HwErr indicates that the module’s firmware cannot communicate with
the modules firmware

• Four sets of asynchronous data multiplexed to the AL4304
• All four asynchronous channels embedded in same channel ID
• Four sets of asynchronous data demultiplexed from the AL4304

• BAUD rate 1200 to 115200 (standard rates)
• Parity Odd, Even, None
• Interface for RS-232, RS-422, RS-485 configurations
• Two DB-9 connectors (two channels on each)

• Sets the transmit channel ID for the module
• Places a tag on this module’s data that allows it to be identified by a
demultiplexing module to recreate the data
• All Channel IDs must be unique on the multiplexing side
• All four asynchronous channel’s data are embedded into a single
packet using a single TX CHID

Status / Settings – RX CHID
Range: 0x000 0x7FF

• Sets the receive channel ID for the module
• This configures the module to capture data from a channel with the
same channel ID

Status / Settings – PA Status, PB Status, PC Status, PD Status
Values: Active, Idle

• Provides activity status for the ports (PA = Port A etc.)
• Idle means that there is no data passing in either direction on the port
• Active means that data is seen on the port
• This is the same as the Status n field on the Setup screens

Status / Settings - Status A/B, Status C/D
Values: OFF, 1200 – 115200 (standard BAUD rates)

• Configures the BAUD rate for the channel
• This is the BAUD rate for the data it is receiving from the local
equipment
• OFF disables this input channel on the module

Status / Settings - Rmt BAUD A / Rmt BAUD B / Rmt BAUD C / Rmt BAUD D
Values: OFF, 1200 – 115200 (standard BAUD rates)

• On the Demultiplexing side, this is the BUAD rate of the data that is
being received on that channel
• The local channel will output data at this BAUD rate.
• OFF means that the remote channel is disabled

Status / Settings – Par A / Par B / Par C / Par D
Values: ODD, EVEN, NONE

• On the multiplexing side, parity for this input channel
• This should be set to match the local equipment sending data into this
channel of the ASYNC2 module

Status / Settings – Rmt Par A / Rmt Par B / Rmt Par C / Rmt Par D
Values: ODD, EVEN, NONE

• On the demultiplexing side, parity for this output channel
• This is a status field that is established by the remote ASYNC2
• The local channel will output data with this parity

Status / Settings – IF A / IF B/ IF C / IF D
Values: RS232, RS422, RS485-2W, RS485-4W

• This field sets the electrical interface for this port
• Refer to user manual for information on the electrical interfaces
• Refer to user manual for connector pinot

Status / Settings – Status A / Status B / Status C / Status D
Values: Active, Idle

• This field provides status for the port
• Active means that data is seen on the port
• Idle means that there is no data passing in either direction on the port
Modules – HVA1 (2180)

MPEG video (H.264) and audio input/output module
• Configurable as Video Input or Video output module
• Operates in NTSC or PAL
• Configurable data rates (200 kbps to 8 Mbps)
• Configurable frame rate (1 to 30 fps)
• Module interfaces with another HVA1
• One set as encoder and one set as decoder

• One set of video/audio data is supported


Configuration / Settings - Mode
Values: Disabled, Encode, Decode

• Disabled means that the module is not running
• Encode means that the module set to encode the video and audio on
its Video In and Audio In connectors
• Decode means that the module is set to decode video and audio on its
Video Out and Audio Out connectors

Configuration / Settings – Video Status
Values: Active, Idle, HW Err

• Active means that the module see a valid video signal and is
compressing or uncompressing the signal as the Mode indicates
• Idle means that the module does not recognize a valid video signal or
valid data
• HW Err indicates a fault in the hardware. Contact Apogee Labs
customer support

Configuration / Settings – Total Bit Rate
Range: 0 to 10000 Kbps

• Indicates the Total Bit Rate used by the compressed video and audio
• Total Bit Rate will be greater than encoder Bit Rate due to the audio
bandwidth and transport overhead

Configuration / Settings – Enc ID
Range: 0x000 to 0x7FF

• When in Encode Mode, This is the channel ID of the packets getting
multiplexed and sent to the demultiplexer

Configuration / Settings – Enc Std
Values: NTSC, PAL

• When in Encode Mode, This is the Video Standard that the compression
engine is trying to synchronize to
• This must be set to match the video source on the Video In connector

Configuration / Settings – Frame Rate
Values: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 12.5, 15, 25, 30

• When in Encode Mode, sets the frames per seconds that the
compression engine is compressing
• Configuring the Frame Rate allows the user to strike a balance
between image quality, bandwidth, and motion detection

Configuration / Settings – Bit Rate
Range: 200 to 8000 kbps

• When in Encode Mode, this sets the target bit rate for the compressed
video
• This value does not account for bandwidth from the audio or
compression overhead (refer to Total Bit Rate)

Value: Enabled, Disabled

• When in Encode Mode, this determines is the audio input signal is
compressed and sent in the module’s packet
• Enabled includes the audio in the module’s packetized data
• Disabled does not include the audio in the module’s packetized data

Range: 0x000 to 0x7FF

• When in Decode Mode, This sets the ID of the packet that the decoder
is attempting to recover video and audio from
• Multiple HVA1 modules can be set to the same Dec Id value to form a
multicast-type implementation

\Values: NTSC, PAL

• When in Decode Mode, This sets the video standard that the module
will be outputting on the Video Out connector
• This must be set to match the video standard of the encoder module
that the module is recovering video and audio from

Four channel audio input/output module

• Bi-directional module
• Operates as an audio input and audio output module
• All four TX channels can be enabled/disabled
• RX audio can listen to up to 6 remote AUD4 TX audio channels
• Module interfaces with another AUD4 module
• Line level inputs and outputs (2.2V pk-pk)
• 32 kbps bandwidth per channel
• RJ-45 connectors (one for each channel)

Configuration / Settings / Status
The AUD4 module has three screens

that are switched between using the
F1, F2, and F3 keys to the right of
the display

Range: 0x00 to 0xFF

This is the base channel ID for the module. The value is padded with a
leading 0x0 to create the full channel ID
• Setting the TXID to 0x00 disables the module

Configuration / Settings / Status - #TXCH
Range: 0 - 4
• This sets the number of active channels in the module
• If less than all four channels are enabled, the number of channels
enabled starts with the first channel
Example: If #TXCH = 3, channels 1, 2, and 3 are enabled

Configuration / Settings – CH1 Mode / CH2 Mode / CH3 Mode / CH4 Mode
Values: Normal, Test,

• This configures each input channel to run in Normal or Test mode
• Normal mode encodes audio from audio input and embeds that data
into the modules data packet
• Test mode encodes a test tone that is slot and channel dependent
• Refer to user manual for frequencies of test tones

Range: 0x000 – 0x4FF

• This defined which AUD4 multiplexed channels are output on each
AUD4 output channel
• Each channel can listen to up to six audio sources
• 0x000 configures that input as null
• Format is: 0xABB
• A is source channel (1 – 4)
• B is source module’s TXID

Configuration / Status – 1A-1F / 2A-2F / 3A-3f / 4A-4F
Values: Q, S, X
• This defines the status of the audio sources
• Each audio output can monitor up to six audio sources
• Q means that the source the input is set to is not found
• S means that the source the input is set to is found
• X means that the there is no source set for that input
