SensorTECH (2015-17)
Program Description
SensorTECH (2015-17) is an RDC-directed
research program in the area of sensor
research, development and demonstration in
simulated and real operating environments.
Remote sensing often involves technologies
and services that collect and analyze data to
characterize an object, geographic area, or
physical environment from a distance using
aircraft, satellites, autonomous underwater
vehicles (AUVs), unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs) and other research platforms.
The goal is not only to advance R&D in
support of the development of sensor
technologies, but also to enhance remote
sensing R&D capacity in Newfoundland
and Labrador; enable technology
commercialization and resource
development, and; leverage local, national
and/or international collaboration to
drive sensor research, development and
deployment. The R&D activities supported
will focus on business and other economic
development opportunities with a priority
focus on coastal, northern and rural areas.
RDC investments will target the following:
Business Applicants
Proposals from business will be open
to funding at any time to support R&D
projects in the following two areas:
Research, Development and
Demonstration
Targets research, development and
demonstration projects where business
is the R&D performer. This includes
collaboration opportunities among two
or more businesses with an interest in the
development and deployment of remote
sensing technologies and services in

simulated and real world environments.
RDC will contribute up to $750,000 per
project over a maximum three-year period
for research and technology development,
with a maximum contribution of 75%
of total eligible project costs. Up to 50%
of total eligible project costs will be
considered for field trials and/or large-scale
demonstration projects where the total
eligible project costs exceed $1 million.
Joint-Industry Projects (JIP)
Targets industry-led projects with two
or more funding partners who contract
technology companies to research,
develop and deploy a technical solution to
address an identified need or development
opportunity. RDC’s contribution to total
eligible costs will not exceed that of one
individual industry funding partner, up
to $750,000 per project over a maximum
three-year period.
Anticipated R&D outcomes include one or
more of the following: the strengthening
of in-house technical capacity, new
product or service innovation, technology
commercialization, and improved
profitability (higher productivity, lower
costs, etc.).
Non-commercial Applicants
The funding mechanism for non-
commercial applicants will be a competitive
call for proposals. Non-commercial
applicants include: industry associations,
innovative community organizations and
academic researchers at the College of the
North Atlantic and Memorial University of
Newfoundland, including its institutes and
incorporated entities with the capability to
