I’ve always had an innate fascination with the sea and what it harbored, so it was a fairly easy
choice when picking my desired future profession. Marine biology —or oceanography to many— is the
study of the living ocean, it’s inhabitants, and its systems. Before setting off to gather research, I hadn’t
really known just how many organizations hosted biology-based opportunities, but kinda have any
positions open. Jobs relating to hands-on branches of the field are actually in high demand, with little
positions open. I also wasn’t aware of just how many colleges offer courses on oceanography for
degrees, as I started my research knowing of only a handful of college opportunities. Most of the forms
of study focus mainly on the observation and research of the underwater ecosystem; but, other
professions, such as veterinarian branches and marketing, also come in quite handy when filling open
roles.
For the interview I conducted, I wanted to mainly focus on what I’ve always wanted to do: work
in the hands-on aspects. I reached out to the general inquiries email of The Marine Mammal Center in
Sausalito, CA., saying that I was an aspiring biology student with some questions, and was met with an
almost immediate response. Danielle Henderson, an education programs assistant, answered my short
set of questions with an abundance of useful information for any future biologist. She answered
questions such as the challenges she faces in her job, an average day at the facilities, and
recommendations for future studies. She actually recommended a program for teens working at the
center, which I may apply for next summer! I wasn’t too surprised with what I was told, except how
difficult it may be to actually get involved in the field. Henderson described that PhDs and/or Masters

It’s really inspired to work even harder to reach my goal as a marine-biologist, and the information has
