Ashley Enslen has had a successful Spring 2018 PSIII placement in one of our grade 4 classes at

Dr. Probe Elementary School. Very early on she connected with her Teacher Mentor and made
great effort to be involved and to get to know staff, and school procedures and traditions.
During her internship, Ashley has been responsible to teach Grade 4 Social Studies, Language
Arts and Art. Ashley dedicated herself to knowing the curriculum, discovering engaging ways to
teach it, and used effective assessment strategies to measure learning. Her lessons were
organized and included time for discussion, clarification, hands on activities,
group/paired/independent work, assessment, and reteaching. She introduces her lessons with
stories, relates the learning to life, provides discussion time, invites experimentation and
prediction time, and builds in hands on activities and games to ensure engagement. Ashley
manages behaviours well and is continually looking for ways to improve her practice.
During her internship, Ashley also organized and facilitated lunch time intramural activities
which gave her the opportunity to practice management techniques with groups of students that
were not her own and who did not know her very well. This has contributed greatly to her
management toolkit, her self-confidence, and will serve her well in the years ahead. Ashley also
supported a staff committee for our upcoming Everyone Counts at Probe school wide maths day.
Ashley developed great relationships with her students. She took the time to get to know them,
their back stories, their strength and growth areas, and their interest points. Each time I observed
her, students were engaged, listening, and knew the outcomes for the lesson. She is well
organized and makes behaviour expectations clear. Ashley is not afraid to wait for children to be
settled and focussed. Because Ashley`s expectations are clear and she follows through, she has
very few management issues and her transitions have nice flow.
Ashley participated in the school supervision schedule and her attendance and contributions here
were greatly appreciated by the teaching team. She volunteered for more than her fair share here,
and stepped in to help others when situations arose that required their attention. Ashley attended
staff meetings and professional learning activities. She is highly involved, participating in
Collaborative Response Model meetings and school events. Ashley participated in her team’s
biweekly planning time, where she contributed to the common goals of her team.
Ashley’s attendance at our March Celebration of Learning was appreciated by her Mentor
Teacher, who reports that Ashley conducted herself professionally and was articulate and
informative with parents about student learning. Ashley’s report card comments linked the
strength and growth areas of student learning to the curriculum.
Ashley is a reflective teacher who takes the time to consider each child’s needs, strengths and
growth areas. She asks for feedback and changes her practice to incorporate advice or new tools
and strategies. She approaches student learner outcomes in creative and engaging ways and uses
a variety of differentiation and assessment tools to guide learning and inform her teaching.
Ashley very quickly became a contributing and highly regarded staff member at our school. I
wish Ashley all the best in her adventure as a successful new teacher. She has great skills and
talents that will only be enhanced with experience.
