The "Zanthu" File
This is a collection of documents pertaining to the Xothic
Legend-Cycle that I found online in the late 1990s, in the
early days of the internet. It has since disappeared, as have
several others (through Google, I have only been able to find
a small sample re-posted by Dan Clore in a message board).
Thad saved the files as text but lost them, along with other
amazing materials such as a very lengthy study of Die
Unaussprechlichen Kulten and a gallery and partial translation
of the G'harne Fragments; however, those documents and more
were lost in a freak failure of my old computer, as were my
various back-ups in other circumstances (fellow searchers after
pseudobiblia are no doubt sadly familiar with such misfortunes).
But I had kept printouts of them! My tech-savvy friends mocked
my insistence on having everything I could in print, because I
somehow felt it wasn't safe or I didn't have anything secure.
Well, Iam not happy to have been proved right, especially since
there is a great deal of materials that were hopelessly lost, but I
am retrieving whatever I can.
Let us begin with The "Zanthu" File. A word of advise: you will
find several items concerning well-known Forteana and paranormal
subjects, at first glance unrelated to the Xothic Cycle; you should
read them, all the same, follow the piecesof the puzzle, and they
will eventually fit together.

This folder contains a number of newspaper articles, an excerpt from Who's Who in Archacology (1910),
and several biographic references regarding Pacific archaeologist Harold Hadley Copeland.
Copeland was an archeologist educated at Cambridge University who won great fame in his explorations
‘and excavations of some remote parts of India and China in the 1890's. After publishing travel logs of his
adventures, he turned his attentions to Asia and Polynesia. Copeland's fast book was a little known
volume, Polynesian Mythology, with a Note on the Muvian Legend Cycle, published in 1906. Copeland
spent several years doing anthropological work in Micronesia, publishing a second book, The Prehistoric
Pacific in the Light of the Ponape Scripture in 1911. In May of 1913, he led the Copeland-Ellington
expedition into Central Asia. The expedition vanished without a trace. Many months later, Copeland
‘emerged from the jungles of Burma alone, emaciated, exhausted, and raving. He carried with him twelve
black jade tablets he claimed to have found in an ancient tomb somewhere in Indo-China
Copeland returned to the U.S. and wrote a partial translation of the tablets, claiming that they were
produced in the lost continent of Mu and described Muvian society and the worship of hideous gods.
Copeland's work was met first with skepticism, then later with outright contempt, by his colleagues. Once
considered the finest Pacific ethnologist in the field, Copeland was publicly humiliated at symposia and
conferences. Undaunted, Copeland undertook a thorough survey of the myth patterns of the Pacific,
hunting down traces of what he called the "Xothic Myth Cycle." Upon his return to America Copeland
‘bequeathed the whole of his Pacific artifacts collection to the Sanbourne Institute for Pacific Studies, in
southern California The Copeland bequest consisted of a dozen steamer trunks full of notes and artifacts,
as well as both the Zanthu Tablets and the infamous Ponape figurine. Copeland suffered an emotional
breakdown, and was institutionalized in a Camario asylum in 1925. A report from the asylum tells how on
May 15, 1926, Copeland burst his restraints while being shaved, overpowered an orderly, and slit his own
throat with a straight razor.
‘The file also has clippings and brochures regarding the Sanbourne Institute for Pacific Studies. The
Institute was founded in 1875 or 1876 by Philip Sanbourne, fishing magnate, to house and came for his
late father Cariton Sanbourne's magnificent collection of Polynesian and Pacific artifacts. The Institute is
located on the shoulders of Santiago Peak, near Los Angeles, California, After attaining a prestigious
reputation, the Institute later ran into mysterious difficulties later in the twentieth century.
In 1928, the institute's curator of manuscripts, Dr. H. Stevenson Blaine, went insane after trying to catalog
the Copeland bequest. Local newspapers, still reveling in the hoopla of King Tut's curse. attributed his
madness to the accursed influence of the infamous Ponape figurine. The strange idol was also rumored to
be the cause of Copeland's madness, The Institute, hoping to capitalize on the scandal, set up an
exhibition of the Copeland bequest in 1929. The very next year, Blaine's successor, Arthur Wilcox
Hodgkins, also went insane. Obsessed with the Ponape figurine, Hodgkins killed a security guard and set
fire to the Institute to prevent the idol from being exhibited. The Ponape figurine was lost and the grounds
damaged in the fire, The coming Depression sealed the Institute's fate, Financially devastated, the
Sanbourne Institute closed its doors in 1933, many feared for good.
In more recent years, the Institute has risen again thanks to contributions from Kathleen Lewis, a wealthy
philanthropist. By 1980 the Institute had reopened its old muscum and was offering funding to Pacific
anthropological projects. The file contains a new brochure, complete with the Institute's address and
phone number.
Finally, there is a letter to Kyle Woodson from Dr. Samuel Turner, director of the Institute. The letter
states that the Zanthu Tablets were stolen from the Institute in 1933. The Institute does still possess
Copeland's original translation notes, which contain detailed drawings and a complete facsimile of the
tablet inscriptions Turner invites Woodson to come by and study them any time, mentioning that it has
been a long time since anyone showed any interest in Copeland's tablets.Linguistic Linkages between Archaic Asian Pictograms and

by Paul Matthews
Written to satisfy the thesis requirement for a Master's degree in Archaeology at UCLA
‘Submitted September 17, 1930.
‘This long-winded, dry document details the uncanny similarities between Mayan glyphs from ruins all
over the Maya area and the strange glyphs found on the so-called "Zanthu Tablets” discovered by Harold
Hadley Copeland in 1913. Matthews briefly sketches Copeland's tale: how he found the black jade tablets
{in an ancient tomb in Indo-China and was the only survivor of his il fated expedition. Matthews mentions
‘Copeland's attempt to translate the glyphs, published as "The Zanthu Tablets; A Conjectural Translation"
Copeland's translation, as well as his theories about the tablets’ origins on the lost continent of Mu, are
dismissed as “inherently dubious”
‘Various glyphs taken from inscriptions all over the Maya area are then compared to the glyphs on the
tablets, with shocking results. Matthews makes no attempt to translate either the Zanthu or Mayan glyphs,
‘but does prove rather conclusively that many clements in the two scripts arc identical. Matthews cannot
find other examples of Mayan glyphs in Asia. Instead he launches into a survey of symbols resembling,
Mayan glyphs in such rare occult tomes as the Book of Dyzan, the Ponape Scripture, and Von Junsts
Nameless Cults. Less concrete correlation can be drawn between Mayan glyphs and these symbols,
however.
[At the end of the work is a special acknowledgment to Professors Morgan and Armitage for allowing
Matthews access to UCLA's Restricted Collection. The text, particularly drawings of the glyphs and the
titles of rare books, has been annotated by Woodson

Lemuria
Legendary lost continent of the Indian Ocean said to be the original Garden of Eden and the cradle of the
human race.
“The theory of the existence of Lemuria arose in the nineteenth century, when scientists sought to explain
Darwin's theory of evolution of similar species from a common ancestor. Philip Sclater, an English
‘zoologist, suggested that a land bridge once existed during the Eocene Age from the Malay Archipelago
to the south coast of Asia and Madagascar, thus connecting India to southern Africa. The theory
‘explained why such animals as the lemur are found primarily on Madagascar and in parts of Africa, but
also in India and the Malay Archipelago. Sclater coined the name "Lemuria" after the lemur.
‘Madame Helena P. Blavatsky, co-founder of Theosophy, believed that Lemuria had been inhabited by the
‘Third Root Race of humankind, whom she called the Taro. She described them as fifteen-feet-tall, brown-
skinned hermaphrodites with four arms; some had a third eye in the back of the skull. Their bizarre feet,
‘with protruding heels, enabled them to walk either forward or backward, Their eyes were set far apart in
their flat faces so that they could sce sideways. They had highly developed psychic powers and
‘communicated by telepathy. Their continent, which covered most of the southern hemisphere, broke up
and was destroyed. The Lemurians migrated to Atlantis, where they evolved into the Fourth Root Race
Like the Lemurians, the Atlanteans fled the destruction of their own continent, spreading to other lands
and starting the present Fifth Root Race.
W. Scott-Ellitt, a Theosophist, claimed to investigate Lemuria with the help of “astral clairvoyance." He
said that Lemurians originally laid eggs but evolved to reproduce as do humans. They intermingled with
animals to produce apes. Beings from Venus, the "Lords of Flame," came to Lemuria and helped the race
achieve reincarnation, At the height of their civilization, the Lemurian continent sank into the ocean,
Philosopher Rudolf Steiner, using information he said came from the Akashic Chronicle (Records), said
‘Lemuria extended from Ceylon to Madagascar, and had included parts of southern Asia and Africa. He
also described the Lemurians as the telepathic Third Root Race, who initially had no memory. The goal of
Lemurians was to develop will and clairvoyant power of imagination in order to control the forces of
nature, Lemuria was destroyed by volcanic activity.Mu
In 1870 Colonel James Churchward, a former Bengal Lancer and a big game hunter, announced he had
Jeamed of a lost continent named Mu, once located in the Pacific Ocean with its center just south of the
equator. The continent was six thousand miles long from cast to west and three thousand miles wide from
north to south. Churchward said he leamed this from secret, ancient clay and stone tablets hidden in India,
which had been revealed to him by a Hindu priest.
He said human beings first appeared on Mu some 200,000 years ago, evolving into an advanced race of
about 60 million people in ten tribes. About 12,000 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption, earthquakes,
and tidal waves destroyed the entire continent. Survivors escaped to other lands. Churchward claimed
evidence of the existence of Mu may be found in the legends and artifacts of the ancient Grecks,
Egyptians, Maya, Cliff Dwellers of North America, Chinese, Burmese, Tibetans, Cambodians, and
Pacific Islanders. All the rocky islands mow in the Pacific Ocean are remnants of Mu, he said.
(Churchward never produced the tablets to prove his Discovery." He said his rescarch also included trance
Visits to previous lives. His four books on Mu generally are regarded as romantic science fiction.
CChurchward was supported by noted American archacologist Harold Hadley Copeland. Copeland
purported to translate carvings found on a series of twelve black jade tablets discovered somewhere on the
Platcau of Tsang in Indochina. Copeland claimed that the carvings were “hicratic Nacaal", the high
language of ancient Mu. Originally written by the wizard Zanthu, in whose tomb the tablets were found,
the tablets comprise a partial history of the lost Pacific continent of Mu. They describe in detail the
‘worship of various Muvian deities, including Therifuge, Kamala, and Shakalatal. Certain other passages
hint at the existence of beings called the "Dero" ~ also called "Vhujunka” — who act as servants to the
Muvian pantheon of deities.
Copeland also sited to Augustus Le Plongeon, a ninetcenth-century French physician who was the first to
excavate Mayan ruins in the Yueatan. Le Plongeon claimed the Maya and the ancient Egyptians were
descendants of the "Muvians.”Vhujunka
‘The Vhujunka seem like extremely tll, thin, robed humans from a distance — but only from a distance.
‘They have no eyesockets, and their faces are little more than gaping mouths full of rows of huge teeth.
‘Their skin is bleached, and their many-fingered hands are too long and thin.
‘The Vhujunka are an independent race, with physical bodies, parasites of the Elder Gods. Millions of
years ago, after the Night of Demons when the Elder Gods had to smite themselves into ‘sleep’ the
‘Vhujunka hurriedly invaded Earth and took over the vast network of tunnels which the Elder Gods had
built to honeycomb the planet. (The Earth is not, therefore, truly ‘hollow’ but rather interlaced fairly near
the surface with cyclopean caverns of inhuman design. ) From various cavern exits around the world they
have crept out to abduct humans for breeding purposes and to otherwise terrorize the surface people away
from pursuing the paranormal. The Vhujunka, nicknamed "Deros" by the unfortunate Richard Shaver, are
1 "technological" race only because they still use the advanced weaponry they developed in antiquity.
Since then, their capacity for original thought has degenerated so drastically that they are little more than
robots, hardly any more competent for mass maneuvers than the aging German Nazis whose rickety
prototype saucers are encamped around the Pole entrance (they aren’ allowed inside). However, their
nauseating appearance, and skill at intercepting the telepathic messages, will make them a force to be
reckoned with during the Tribulation period presaging the Final Showdown.
‘The Vhujunka "see" through a means not understood by outsiders — a sort of psychic awareness. It
allows them to operate when in their underground lairs as if they had sight. They live far far below the
surface world in elaborate cities constructed by unknown means. These cities exist only inthe nightmares
and the ravings of madmen. The Vhujunka's morals are incomprehensible, and their thought patterns alien
to all but the most insane (or is it enlightened?) of seckers. The Vhujunka have complex technologies,
some superior and some inferior to that of the surface world, None can say what their actual society is
like—those who are carried away by the Vhujunka are never seen again,
‘The worst volcanoes and earthquakes in history were all deliberately induced by these creatures as
‘nothing more than a reverse version of our “underground testing" of nuclear weapons—a practice of ours
which, incidentally, makes them none too happy and may eventually result in some mind-boggling
"Earthquake War” between the Earth's surface and interior worlds. Common prophecy tells us that this
will be forestalled, but we can't really be too careful. Shoot first, ask questions late.Texts Associated with the Vhujunka

J. Eric Thompson, 1967
:most of the early Spanish explorers and later 19th century archaeologists presumed that the crumbling
ruins all around them were made by lost descendants of Greece, Rome, Babylon, or the fabled isle of
Allantis. Few believed the local Indians capable of such wonders. This idea was, of course, later
dismissed by the scientific community. The last archacologist actively to pursue foreign origin hypotheses
‘was Raymond Merwin, who claimed that legends of a tribe called the Tlachan, or 'sca people’, indicated a
foreign contact. The Tlachan, according to these tales, brought writing, stonemasonry, slavery,
civilization, and religion to the Maya of northern Belize. Interestingly enough, the other Maya of the area
refer to them as the Vhujunka, or "people of the deep." Cerros, just at the edge of the range of these tales,
is considered to be the fist site where Lowland Classic Maya culture flourished. Does its proximity to
these tales, combined with the association of the Tlachan with frogs (the Mayan creation symbol) imply
that these foreigners are the true fathers of the Maya? Most scholars say no. Merwin, struck down by
illness, died before he could form the body of his work into any definite theories.”Excerpt from the book, "Hollow Hassle" by

Author Leland Lovelace told about such a discovery in ‘LOST MINES AND BURIED TREASURES’
(Naylor Co., 1965; also Ace Books, New York). Lovelace said two prospectors were searching for a gold
strike in the desolate mountains of south-western Nevada. The two men were digging in the arid soil
‘when a cave-in led them into a vast underground tunnel. Following the passageway, they went deep into
the mountain and entered a large subterranean room.
‘The two astonished prospectors held their torches high and saw that the cave was furnished with chairs
and tables. The furniture was very large, as if manufactured for a race of giants. Dishes cast from gold and
silver were also found on the tables. Other artifacts made from precious metals were discovered in the
cavern.
Lovelace did not inform his readers as to what the prospectors did with their discovery. We can assume
they carried as much of the precious metal as possible from the scene, then melted down the objects for
‘their gold and silver. This often occurs when a gold-seeker finds a rare archeological discovery. Rather
than risk the treasure being taken over by the state or federal govern- ment, these men play a game of
‘finder's keepers."
Jn 1904, a prospector named J.C. Brown claimed to have made an intriguing discovery in the Sierra
‘Nevada mountain range of California. Brown had been hired by the Lord Cowdray Mining Company of
England to prospect for gold in these isolated areas. During his second trip into the Sicrra Nevadas,
Brown found a manmade tunnel carved into a solid rock wall. According to old reports, a landslide had
destroyed a rock wall that hid the tunnel entrance.
Brown followed the enormous tunnel through the mountain and came to a large, manmade cavern. The
room was lined with sheets of tempered copper. Strange circular shiclds hammered from gold were hung
fon the walls. Unusual artifacts and statues were located in niches in the cavern walls. Unusual drawings,
strange art, indecipherable hieroglyphics AND THE SKELETONS OF WHAT WAS APPARENTLY A
GIANT RACE WERE FOUND IN ROOMS LEADING OFF FROM THE LARGE CAVERN.
Unwilling to share his discovery with his English employers, Brown did not report the treasure cavern
Instead, he continued to work for various mining companies for the next thirty years until his retirement.
‘Then, in 1934, he popped up in Stockton, California, with a map and an intriguing tale. Within a few
days, eighty people were willing to assist the now-aging prospector in getting the precious artifacts out of
the cave.
‘On June 19, 1934, Brown and his followers traveled into the Sierra Nevada mountains. They camped by a
‘small stream, waiting until moming when Brown was to show the group an entrance into the caver.
‘However, during the night, the old prospector vanished. He has not been seen since that night.
Fearing that Brown had somehow duped the eighty people, detectives on the Stockton police department
investigated. "Brown didn’t take a cent from anyone,’ the detectives said after the check-outA letter from issue A-8 of a periodical called

Our foundation has located a vast system of underground passages in the Mother Lode country of
Califomia. They were first discovered in 1936, ignored by all even with our best efforts to reveal them.
Recently a road crew blasted out an opening verifying our claims. ONE (of the chambers is) 200 fect
Jong, 70 feet wide and 50 feet high. We have disclosed what we believe to be a vast subterranean drainage
system (probably traversing the Great American Desert country for a distance of more than 600 miles).
We believe this system extends out like five fingers of your hand to such landmarks as Zion Canyon in
Utah, the Grand Canyon, another runs south from the Carson Sink in Nevada and yet another follows
(below) the westem slope of the same range, joining i's counterpart and ending somewhere in the Mojave
Desert. We believe, contrary to orthodox geologists, that the existence of this underground system drains
all surface waters running into Nevada (none, with the exception of the Armagosa runs out) and accounts
forthe fact that itis a Great American Desert. The creatures that you have written about have been seen in
several ofthese areas, Certainly there has been much ‘saucer’ activity in these parts. For two years I have
collected material pertinent to these creatures and if you have any opinions along these lines I would
appreciate hearing them.
So much for now. I hope that I am still your friend. Much of my time has been devoted (to) helping a

OCEAN? ’'; article in the March, 1980 issue of
John J. Williams' "REBEL MAGAZINE"
Several years ago, subsurface rescarcher Richard Toronto reprinted a news article in his
SHAVERTRON newsletter describing a Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Director in
[Los Angeles. This official talked with a man who said that he was hired by the government to look for
underground water sources for Camp Irwin in California,
‘At one point the man and a partner came across an abandoned mine and decided to follow it to the
‘bottom. Near the bottom he was surprised to discover an ancient earth-fault which was wide enough for
hhim and his companion to enter. They traversed this fault for a good distance until they finally emerged
into a huge river-caver. To his surprise he saw before him a crystal pure underground river over a
‘quarter of a mile wide which flowed through the passage and out of sight.
Since learning of this incident the Metropolitan Water District Director claims to have ‘discovered’ at least
five similar underground rivers. Some of these have allegedly been die-traced and were found to emerge
from the continental slope below the surface of the oceans, and at least one of them into the Gulf of
ifornia.
This might confirm the allegations made by one anonymous retired Navy officer that the Navy has
knowledge of a VAST system or labyrinth of aqua-caverns which meander beneath the surface of
California and even into other western states, and that these watery labyrinths exit out into the oceans via
huge entrances in the lower walls of the Continental Slope. One of the more extravagant claims is that
some of these aqua-cavems are so large that they can be navigated by submarine, and that one nuclear
submarine on a secret mapping mission in fact became lost within the maze and was never heard from
again. Two American nuclear submarines have disappeared without explanation in the past, the U.S.S.
SCORPION and the U.S.S. THRESHER. It is true that one woman who claimed to have had a very
strong emotional bond with her husband who worked on the Thresher, insisted at the time that she just
“knew that her husband was still alive after the ‘disaster’. She said that she and her husband had such a
spiritual-emotional connection that they always knew when the other was in trouble...Richard Sharpe Shaver
Until Richard Sharpe Shaver came along, nearly all nineteenth- and twenticth-century hollow-carth
‘Proponents spoke of the inner world’s inhabitants as members of an advanced, benevolent race whom it
‘would be desirable for human beings to meet and befriend. Shaver, however, had another story to tel.
Shaver technologized hell.
In September 1943, in Chicago, Amazing Stories editor Ray Palmer read a letter from a Barto,
Pennsylvania, reader who claimed to know of an ancient alphabet from Lemuria, a continent said to have
sunk in the Pacific Ocean thousands of years ago, taking a mighty civilization with it. Palmer reprinted
the alphabet in the January 1944 issue, and soon he and the reader, Shaver, were corresponding regularly.
Shaver alleged that for years evil creatures the Vhujunka, also known as “deros"-short for “detrimental
robots” (who were not robots as the term is ordinarily understood but "robots" in the sense of being slaves
to their passions)-had tormented him. Vhujunka were the degenerate remnants of the "Titans," the people
of Lemuria, who 12,000 years ago were forced to escape into great caves under the earth to avoid
deadly radiation from the sun. (Some Titans, however, stayed on the surface, adjusted, and became the
present human race. Others fled to distant planets.) Vhujunka-demons in all but name and close to it even
there-were sadistic idiots who had access to the advanced Titan technology, which they used to increase
sexual pleasure during the orgies to which they were addicted. They also used the machines in marathon
‘torture sessions on kidnapped surface people and also on the "teros” (integrative robots, who were not
robots but good Titans who, though vastly outnumbered, were fighting the deros); they also employed the
‘machines to cause accidents, madness, and other miseries in the world above the caves.
Soon Amazing and its companion pulp Fantastic Adventures were filled with exciting and terrifying tales
of the underworld. Most of these stories bore Shaver’ by-line, but Palmer was writing them. The first, "T
Remember Lemuria!" all 31,000 words of it, appeared in Amazing Stories March 1945 issue, and in the
introduction Shaver told readers of his vivid memories of life as Mutan Mion, who lived many thousands.
of years ago in Sub Atlan, one of the great cities of ancient Lemuria!"
AA flood of letters crossed Palmer's desk, some from individuals who claimed they, too, had met with the
deros and barely lived to tell Amazing about it. Chester S. Geier, one of the magazine's regular
contributors, started the Shaver Mystery Club as a way both of handling the mail and of investigating"
the "evidence" for the deros. Palmer and Shaver had caused quite a stir.
‘Not all readers were happy about it, however. Many were furious; convinced that some sort of swindle
was afoot, they feared that the Shaver mystery would make all science-fiction fans look like fools or
worse. By 1948 their protests led Ziff-Davis, Amazing Stories parent company, to order the series
stopped.
After co-founding Fate with Curtis Fuller in 1948, Palmer left Ziff-Davis and moved to tiny Amherst,
Wisconsin, to produce his own magazines, notably Flying Saucers and Mystic (later Search), which
regularly featured Shaver material. In 1961 he started The Hidden World, a series of magazines in trade-
paperback format, and over the next three years reprinted Shaver's original articles and ran new
‘contributions from a diminishing band of enthusiasts.
Shaver died in Arkansas in November 1975, Palmer in Florida two years later. The following excerpt is from the Winter '92
issue of 'FAR OUT' Magazine, in an article by
H. Leo O'Neal titled 'THE LEGEND OF THE
SOUTH ESK MUMMIES'
These (more) recent events surrounding the South Esk catacombs, mentioned in the article, are as
follows. We ask the readers simply to make their own determination as to the authenticity of the account
based on other similar reports which we have related earlier.
In 1946, Dr. F. Bruce Russell, a retired Port Hedland physician, struck of a conversation with a Mr.
Howard E. Hill in the town of Cuncudgerie. Russell informed Hill that in 1931, while exploring ruins in
‘South Esk, he broke through to an underground cavem. After finding some lights he entered and found
himself in’a cavern with two passages, one heading ‘lef’ and the other ‘right’. Exploring the left-hand
passage he came to a cave-in, some 25 yards from the entrance shaft. The right-hand path however
continued at a steep angle downward for about a quarter of a mile. Although some of the passages scemed
natural, others appeared to have been expanded by artificial means, but all of these went off in several
directions. One tunnel eventually led to a large room, and this room also had branch tunnels leading off in
all directions. Laid out in this chamber were 3 ‘mummies’ and several strange artifacts, some of which
appeared ‘Egyptian’ while others were more ‘Central American’ like in construction. The strange and
shocking thing about the mummies however, according to Russell, was that many of them were nearly 8
foot long or tall! He described the underground system as a kind of ‘underground city’
‘The inhabitants must have been very advanced, Russell concluded from what he observed, and he was
certain that the find was much more important than the famous King Tut's Tomb itself. Following the
passages he eventually discovered other openings to the surface, but most of these were in obscure places,
yet all that he explored were within seven miles of the ‘shaft’ through which he had first entered the
‘underground complex.
Eventually, Russell discovered 32 caves in all throughout the area. Although he could not prove it, since
‘many of them had collapsed, he supposed that many of them might have at one time connected with the
underground system. He also stumbled across a large chamber which he referred to as the ‘ritual hall’, and
which contained strange markings and symbols. Another tunnel, according to Russell, went from this
room to another underground hall where well-preserved bones of dinosaurs, sabre-toothed tigers,
‘mastodons and other extinct animals were displayed in hollowed areas along the walls.
In 1946, after years of private investigation and secrecy, Russell decided to exploit the find. After
‘gathering a group of potential investors he held a meeting in which he displayed some of the artifacts
‘which he had taken out of the underground system. Mr. Hill was invited to the meeting provided that he
‘could help out as an investor, Hill and the rest of the investors were taken, after this meeting concluded, to
‘the underground complex itself, to where Russell returned the artifacts which he had displayed to the
investors as he was convinced that the protected atmosphere of the caves would preserve them. The group
was taken into the cavern in which the ‘bones’ and the ‘temple’ were located. According to witnesses, it
was “chock full of bizarre artifacts of all kinds."
On August 4, 1947, Howard Hill, acting as spokesman for ‘Amazing Explorations’, issued a brief
statement to the press announcing the discovery. The story received minimal coverage, to his surprise,
and only appeared in a few newspapers in which the story was ‘balanced’ with very derogatory and
skeptical statements from the ‘scientific’ community. After this, a live press conference was planned, in which Russell planned to display a skeleton andlor
