We think it best to select Churchill's The Great Democracies plus one of the American history books listed below, but
some may prefer to choose one of the following options over the Churchill book. Choosing two American History books
would probably be overkill. Americans and those who desire a more complete picture of the American Civil War (which is
covered in Term 2) will prefer an additional option. One possibility would be to use the Churchill book alone for terms 1
and 3, and substitute an American history book to be used alone for term 2. (Term 1: 1815-1860; Term 2: 1816-1865
America; Term 3: 1865-1902)

** PLEASE NOTE that TruthQuest History does not require the use of any "spine" resources, as innumerable topic-
specific books, such as can be found at a library, are cited in each section of the TruthQuest History guides. However, we
have been asked to also include pertinent citations to the most popular "spine" resources (so-called because they provide
thorough, narrative coverage of the entire period) by families who enjoy having a "spine" on hand for times when they are
unable to find topic-specific resources. **

Because there are varying editions of some "spine" resources (reference books) cited in TruthQuest History, we have
been asked by those who choose to use spines (they are not "required") to give detailed information about the actual
edition used in creating TQH's citations.
