material on hand.
ESL instructors know that for students working towards CLB 2 and 3, how
difficult it is to find real world recordings that these levels can understand.
This resource was created to make planning and assessing of listening
easier.
Each unit has three practice activities, using all three will ensure every-
thing is covered. The second listening activity in each unit is in the same

Listening, Reading & Writing, & PBLA Sheets
Janet Kan Includes 2 CDs TBLT
This book was developed in 3 sections. The first section,
Listening Skills, focuses on multi-purpose listening exercises. They require time and
repetition. The skills that are developed can then be applied in the various contexts of
the second section of the book. The listening exercises include letters of the alphabet,
numbers, names, license plates, postal codes, phones numbers, addresses, maps,
messages, one-sided phone messages & dictations.
The second section, Reading & Writing, incorporates the use of the skills from section
1, but focuses largely on reading and writing in specific contexts, although there are
suggestions for some oral applications to those contexts as well. The reading & writing section includes Invi-
tations, dates, times, answering an invitation (accepting and refusing), notes, telephone messages, letters,
addressing envelopes, forms, and greeting cards (phrases and symbols).
The third section, Assessment, contains 13 assessment sheets. Great for PBLA binders.
The author also includes an 8 week outline on how to use the lessons.

How To Play
Divide the students into groups of 3–12.
1. Each player needs a set of answer cards (A, B, C) and betting
cards (5, 10, 20). Each player starts with 50 points.
2. The first player (1) draws a question card from the stack and reads the question and possible
answers, inserting the name of the player on his/her right (2) in the blank line. For example, “What is
Maria’s favourite meal of the day? A. Dinner. B. Lunch. C. Breakfast.”
3. All the players place one guess card, A, B, or C upside in front of them.
4. Next they place one betting card, 5, 10, or 20, upside down in front of them.
5. Player 2 chooses an answer card without showing the others and places it upside down. S/he
does not bet on his/her own answer. When all answer cards are placed and betting cards are down,
player 2 reveals his/her answer. Then all the other players reveal their guesses and bets. The bets
are recorded, points are added to or taken away from the 50 points each player starts with. (Each
group should appoint one recorder.)
6. Encourage your students to discuss the question, and the answers.
7. Next, it is player 2’s turn to take and read the next question card.
8. Play continues until each player has at least one turn reading a question card. More rounds can
be played. The player with the highest score is the winner.

George, who left their native country, Scotland, to go their separate ways, one to Canada, the other
to Australia. Fifty-four years later, they find each other on Facebook, share their life journey by email
and Pat, an experienced ESL teacher for thirty years, has put it all together in Time and Tide. Be-

Pre CLB, CLB 1, CLB 2 NEW!
Multi-Level - Pre-Benchmark, CLB 1, CLB 2, and an Audio CD
A Three Book Series by Maria Crapsi & Agnes Kucharska
Each book in this three book series has three levels, Pre-Benchmark, CLB 1 and CLB 2. Each level begins
with an illustrated target vocabulary or vocabulary section then moves onto vocabulary building exercises,
and reading, writing, listening and speaking exercises. The audio CD is a great way for your students to hear
more native speakers of English in your classroom.
Teachers often wish there was an audio CD with workbooks. They want their students to hear more native
speakers of English in their classroom. The audio CD included with this book has four native speakers - 2
male and 2 female. The CD content and track numbers are listed in the Table of Contents. Also look
for the symbol seen to the right on the exercise pages. It indicates an audio CD track is available and CD
the track number. Some tracks are dedicated listening exercises, some are audio answer keys and 3
others are alternative tracks for read-a-long or passive listening. If you don’t want your students to be
passive listeners try this activity. Photocopy the target vocabulary, pass out one word to each student and
then play the read-a-long track. Each time the student hears their word they hold it up or they stand up.
In each unit you will find a page of flashcards. These are great for matching games such as memory.
Also included are Listening And Speaking Tests. These test vocabulary and sometimes preposition of place.
For example, while looking at the grid of illustrations a student may be asked, “Is the doctor above the
surgeon?” The student will need to know the vocabulary and where the illustration is on the page in relation to
other illustrations. We have included a preposition of place review sheet and activity in the Appendix.

Romeo & Juliet
Three Levels For Beginner ESL & Literacy Students In One Book
Adapted by Rose Coffey
Teachers frequently ask for age-appropriate stories for their young adult and adult students at the beginner
level. This book includes three adaptations of Romeo and Juliet for beginners. The beginner student only has
to learn 96 words to understand the simplest adaptation. And these 96 words are ones that they need every
day in their lives! Only three words in the story are not on “the most commonly used words” list: Romeo,
Juliet, and Tybolt. If the students can describe the basic simplified plot of the play with only 96 words, imagine
what else they will be able to speak about. This book is ideal for the teacher who has a class of beginner
students at a variety of levels. Each of the three adaptations comes with its own vocabulary list and exercises.
The exercises include:
verb tense exercises fill in the blanks true or false word find
The appendix includes a website activity, and tips for putting on a student-generated Romeo and Juliet play.

Real Stories
Real Heroes, Real Animals & Real People
Pat Dyck
This book is for students who are reading sentences and ready to move on to stories. Each of the sixteen
uplifting, high-interest stories in this book are 100-150 words long and written in about 20 short simple
sentences. The author found her students could read simple sentences but were intimidated by the paragraph
form of news stories. She presents each story first in a comic strip form - pictures with key nouns and verbs.
The second version of each story is in an easy-to-read sentence-by-sentence format, i.e., each sentence is
on its own line. Later in each unit your students will read the story in paragraph form. This technique is called
scaffolding, the students is successfully eased into paragraph reading, and it works .There are a wide variety
of ready–to–photocopy exercises to reinforce new vocabulary and ideas. The exercises:
people, places & things past tense verb rules questions with “did” plurals with “es”
Themes Include:

Out of Your Chairs! 40 Active Games for ESL
Dani MacArthur & Thane Ladner
Out of Your Chairs! was developed in ESL classrooms. The authors saw the need to supplement the tradi-
tional desk, pen and paper language lessons with active, physical and communicative activities. Students can
only sit for a certain period of time before their capacity to learn diminishes. Active ESL games present a
structured, enjoyable was to continue learning a new language. Some students learn languages with their
whole body and Out of Your Chairs! provides a variety of ways of experiencing English kinesthetically. During
the games students communicate with each other and the teacher. Students come to life! Shy students forget
about being self-conscious as they become caught up in the game. Hard-to-motivate students are suddenly
working, driven by the desire to win. The games index lets you see at a glance the type of game, level, prepa-
ration time and playing time etc. The games are coded by level, beginner to advanced. Each game comes
with straightforward instructions and has many reproducible templates and card sets. The games have an
instant appeal but the more they are played the better they work. The games are divided into five categories:
