Bases of Industrial Pharmacy

Introduction

Introduction

Industrial Pharmacy

Industrial pharmacy may be defined as the science and technology of producing

pharmaceuticals (medicinal substances and their dosages) efficiently and
economically on the commercial scale in industry.
Thus industrial pharmacy may be classified into the following areas:
1- Pharmaceutical engineering including:
a- Unit Operations
b - Unit Processes
2- Pharmaceutical product development
3- Pharmaceutical packaging.
4- Pharmaceutical Administration
These items required the cooperative effort of many specialists. The science of
pharmacy, pharmacology, chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, packaging and
industrial administration are coordinated and applied to the large scale production of
pharmaceuticals such as tablets, capsules, suppositories, tinctures, fluid extracts,
ointments, syrups, vaccines, antibiotics, vitamins, hormones, the active principles of
vegetable drugs and synthetic organic chemicals.
To be an effective program and to fulfill the increasing needs of pharmaceutical
industry, it must be quantitatively based on good foundation of mathematics,
chemistry, physics, engineering and pharmaceutical sciences.

Bases of Industrial Pharmacy

A good industrial pharmacy curriculum includes pharmaceutical engineering as one

of its important aspects. Since technology to be effective required engineering to
express its operation in realistic production. Pharmaceutical engineering is that branch
of engineering concerning the application of engineering and pharmaceutical sciences
to the design, construction and operation of plants for production of pharmaceuticals.
It is concerned with the evaluation of pharmaceutical machinery and equipment and
the development of processes in which materials undergo chemical changes (Unit
processes) or certain physical changes (unit operation). A careful analysis of the
present state of pharmaceutical technology reveals that a great deal of the equipment
used is representative of the types developed primarily for chemical and other
industries.
This book is introduced to help the industrial pharmacist to understand the basic
operations that take place in industrial pharmacy.
We hope that the book fulfill the needs of the students and pharmacists in the area
of industrial pharmacy.
