Module Description
The GX2-RX200BX2 fulfills a wide range of applications by receiving, monitoring, controlling,
and converting modulated optical inputs into an RF output signal.
The GX2-RX200BX2 has two independent receivers, A and B, and a common digital controller.
Each receiver accepts both 1310 nm and 1550 nm optical inputs and converts them to RF. Each
receiver has an internal PIN attenuator, controlled by the embedded circuit, that sets the
receiver output level.
Functions performed by the GX2-RX200BX2:
! Demodulates an optical input and provides an RF output
! Provides manual gain control of the RF output
! Monitors parameters and reports them to the network management system
! Provides local alarm indication by changing the color of the front-panel STATUS LED
! Stores module identity, operational parameters, and set-up information
! Enables downloadable firmware for field upgrades

Receiver Paths
Each receiver of the GX2-RX200BX2 accepts 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelength optical inputs.
The optical detector of each receiver demodulates its respective optical input and provides an RF
output. Detector current is monitored by the embedded circuit and is used to determine the
received optical power.
Signal-path control is provided by the variable attenuator across a 20 dB range, as determined
by two operating modes: manual gain control (MGC) and OFF. You can select the operating
mode from the SDU front panel, local craft port, or Network Management System.
Directional couplers in the paths of both receivers tap off a –20 dB signal from the RF outputs
for RF TP1 and RF TP2. Individual connectors mounted on the back panel of the GX2-RX200BX2
(Figure 2-5, Key 3 and 4) provide an RF output for each receiver path.
Embedded Section
The GX2-RX200BX2 is controlled and monitored by the microprocessor section, which performs
the following tasks:
! Provides control of specified module functions.
! Monitors module operation and reports status and alarm conditions.
! Provides an interface to the GX2-CM100B control module through the GX2-HSG* backplane
to enable status monitoring and control of the module.
! Provides the ability to download new firmware code into the module through a status
monitoring and control interface with minimal interruption of operation.
Communication Interfaces
You can monitor the GX2-RX200BX2 locally using the GX2-CM100B in conjunction with
Network Management Software. A PC interface is available through an Ethernet port on the
front of the GX2-CM100B. Using a standard Web browser, the graphical user interface (GUI)
provides a point-and-click method of monitoring and controlling the shelf.
For higher-level management, the GX2-RX200BX2 can be easily connected to a remote Network
Management System using the standard Ethernet SNMP interface.

This section provides additional information necessary to properly use the GX2-RX200BX2. It
also provides a procedure to download new GX2-RX200BX2 firmware.
Operating Modes
Each receiver in the GX2-RX200BX2 module has two operating modes: manual gain control
(MGC), and off. You can control each receiver independently. To set the operating mode of a
GX2-RX200BX2 receiver, use the SDU, local PC port, or Network Management System.
Off
In Off mode, the receiver RF output is minimal to enable removal of the signals from an
upstream receiver, transmitter, or set-top terminal. The off mode is also used to disable the
alarms from an inactive receiver.
RF Test Points
The front panel has two RF test-point connectors, one for each receiver. The top connector is for
the A path and the bottom connector is for the B path. The level at the test point is 20 dB below
the respective receiver RF output.
RF Output Level
The RF output level from the GX2-RX200BX2 depends on the type of laser that is used, the RF
input level to the laser, the GX2-RX200BX2 gain setting, and the optical link loss between the
laser and the GX2-RX200BX2.
Table 4-1 lists the various laser transmitter models and the suggested input level for each one:

Table 4-2 shows the RF output levels that result when the suggested input level is applied to
the various transmitters and the GX2-RX200BX2 gain is adjusted to the midrange (nominal)
setting. For output levels greater than 52 dBmV (shown in bold type in Table 4-2 to indicate
these levels should not be used) the gain must be adjusted below the midrange setting until the
output level is less than 52 dBmV. All levels are given in dBmV.

Embedded Section
The microprocessor section contains memory to hold two separate banks of operating firmware:
factory code and download code. Factory code is programmed into the module at the factory and
is read-only. Download code can be changed or updated by downloading new firmware as
described below.
The microprocessor internal memory also stores module information and calibration data that is
programmed at the factory.
The microprocessor contains digital-to-analog (D/A) and analog-to-digital (A/D) converters that
are used to control and monitor module operation. The module communicates to the
GX2-CM100B control module through the GX2-HSG* backplane.
Boot Operation
When the module is powered on or reset, the microprocessor boots up and begins operating. The
microprocessor determines which operating firmware bank to use factory code or download
code. It then verifies the integrity of the selected bank code by performing a cyclic redundancy
check (CRC). If the CRC indicates the firmware is error free, the microprocessor begins
operation using that firmware code.
During the boot up, the front-panel receiver alarm STATUS LED is green and blinks on and off.
After the boot up completes successfully the front-panel LED enters an initialization sequence.
If the CRC indicates errors in the firmware, the microprocessor checks to ensure that the other
bank contains valid firmware. The microprocessor verifies the CRC of the code in the other bank
and, if error free, begins operating with that firmware.
If an error occurs during the boot up, the STATUS LED illuminates red and an alarm message
indicating which bank failed is sent to the Network Management System.
If both banks fail the CRC test, the microprocessor stops operating and the receiver STATUS LED
blinks red to indicate that the boot up failed. The module continues to pass signal without
microprocessor control.
Network Management
The receiver module monitors selected parameters during operation and compares the
measurements to a table stored in memory. This table defines high and low limits, as well as,
STATUS LED indication if a fault occurs. When a measurement exceeds the alarm limit, the
appropriate status LED is illuminated and the fault is reported to the control module. The SDU,
local PC interface, or Network Management System can be used to further isolate the fault
condition.
