HDD Design Software Programs
y Petris Technology Inc.‐ DrillPath, DrillMud and DrillEst.
y Performance Pipe ‐ PLEXCALC II
y Atlas Bore Planner ‐ Vermeer Manufacturing Ltd.
y FieldCalc system ‐ Vermeer Manufacturing Ltd.
y Mdrill ‐ Delft Geosystems
All above programs consider only limited aspects of the
HDD construction and design process
bore path design and/or pipe design
Presentation Objectives
1) Introduce a new HDD design framework
that is incorporated into a BoreAidTM
software program
2) Demonstrate how BoreAidTM can be used
as a Quality Assurance and Quality
Control (QA/QC) tool for HDD projects
Presentation Overview
1. Provide overview of the BoreAidTM
framework
2. Discuss HDD QA/QC requirements
3. Presents a case study that
demonstrates how the program can
be used as a HDD QA/QC tool
HDD Design Framework
y Framework consists of a sequential and systematic
methodology for the design of a HDD project
y BOREAIDTM consists of five interconnect modules
that pass on previously entered data and calculated
values:
i. Bore Planner
ii. Pipe Loads/Deflections Calculator
iii. Drill Planner
iv. Bore Pressure Estimator
v. Equipment/Tooling Selection
HDD Design Framework
BOREPLANNER
y Allows the user to determine a suitable pipeline
pathway by taking into consideration site constraints:
y buried utilities
y drill pipe entrance and exit angles
y obstacles, and
y drill pipe geometric constraints
Surface Topography
Topography Assistant
y Surface features are input using the click and drag
Site Soil Input Using Assistant
y subsurface soil/rock site stratigraphy and ground water
BOREPLANNER
y 2 and 3 dimensional graphic showing topography and
soil conditions
BOREPLANNER
y Complex site geology conditions and obstacles can
easily be input with utility clearance zones
Rod by Rod Plan
HDD Design Framework
i. Bore Planner
ii. Pipe Loads/Deflections
Calculator
iii. Drill Planner
iv. Bore Pressure Estimator
v. Equipment/Tooling Selection
Pipe Load/Deflection Calculator
Users are required to input pipe properties:
y material type
y length
y Dimension ratio (DR)
y outside diameter (OD)
y and internal pressure
Typical pipe material, drill fluid slurry, and bore
properties are automatically input.
Pipe Load/Deflection Calculator
y Pipe Operation and Installation loads are calculated
at each drill rod location in accordance with:
y ASTM F1216 ‐ Polyethylene
y Pipeline Rehabilitation Council Institute (PRCI) for
steel pipe
