Subject: Cover Memo for Robert W. Baird Job Application Packet
The purpose of this memo is to introduce the qualifications required for the Corporate Events internship
at Robert W. Baird, and to explain how I constructed an application packet for their position. Following
this memo, please find copies of my cover letter and resume, along with the job description from
Indeed.com.
Robert W. Baird, a highly-regarded wealth management firm based in Milwaukee, is seeking applicants
for their full or part-time paid internship. The internship provides opportunities to gain experience from
knowledgeable professionals while assisting with event planning, including event mailings, registration,
and follow-up. Additionally, interns will be expected to perform tasks around the office, allowing for
interaction with various departments. Baird prides themselves on being team-centered, and they strive
for excellence, as their reputation shows. This internship would be a valuable experience and could open
the door to future employment at Baird, or could showcase the skills of the intern for other potential
employers on a resume.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office is required, and I highlighted my experience using word
processing applications within the skills section of my resume. I also touched on relevant coursework to
show that I have technical knowledge of the communication skills they require, in addition to the real-
life application which I elaborated on in my leadership experience section.
Since my resume and cover letter will be read – however briefly – by the human resources manager of
Baird, I can assume they will be scrutinized by a very professional, conscientious person. My research of
Baird provided me with a clear picture of how particular they are when choosing employees, and I want
my self-presentation to adequately meet their requirements. They place their commitment to quality at
the forefront of everything they do, ensuring that the needs of their clients are met. Their public image
is integral to securing new clients, and, as such, they take the interview and hiring process very
seriously. If I want to progress that far, I must make sure the first impression they have of me assures
them that my values align with theirs, and that their company will be stronger with me. The third
paragraph of my cover letter states that I view myself as a representative of all organizations and
entities to which I belong. This is completely sincere, and I intend this to convey my conviction to Baird
that I am the intern they are seeking.

Subject: Cover Memo for Milwaukee Center for Independence Job Application Packet
The purpose of this memo is to highlight the qualifications required for the Marketing and
Communications Associate internship at the Milwaukee Center for Independence, and to explain how I
created an application packet tailored to their position, pairing my experience with their need. Following
this memo, please find copies of my cover letter and resume, along with the job description from
Indeed.com.
The Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to securing the
best quality of life possible for individuals with special needs. Their wholistic approach enables their
clients to contribute to the community, providing them not only with independence, but also a sense of
purpose, which is vital for human flourishing. The MCFI is seeking applicants for their part-time Public
Relations and Communications-related internship. This position is unpaid, but the intern will gain
valuable hands-on experience from knowledgeable professionals in the field, and will have the
satisfaction of helping to further the mission of the MCFI.
Applicants should be pursuing a degree in Communications or a related field, which I am. They should
demonstrate the willingness and ability to work within a team, but may also work independently on
projects, which means they must be self-motivated and organized. From my extensive leadership
experience within 4-H and other youth organizations, my resume shows that I have the requisite
capacity to function productively as a team member or as a leader. Required technical skills include the
ability to use computer applications, especially Microsoft Office, which I evidenced in the skills section of
my resume.
Applicants must also form and maintain good relationships with MCFI staff, clients, and the community,
which may include face-to-face conversations and oral or written communication interactions. Through
my involvement in the 4-H Oral History Project – which consists of building rapport and conducting
interviews – I have gained experience serving as the representative of a non-profit entity, and engaging
others in a professional and goal-oriented manner. I have also been interviewed about the activities of
non-profits which I represented, and I highlighted those various interview experiences on my resume.
Whether I am called upon to lead the conversation or answer questions about the organization, I have
the necessary base knowledge, and I am actively evolving my skills.
The final and most important aspect of working for a non-profit is understanding and supporting their
mission. As I discussed in the first paragraph of my cover letter, my passion firmly aligns with the mission
of the MCFI. I have the skills necessary to serve the MCFI in the context of this internship, and I also have
the drive to view each day as an opportunity to further their cause and improve their clients’ quality of
life. Since this is an unpaid internship, it is likely that applicants are seeking either to gain the technical
experience, to serve the community, or both. I have intentionally crafted a cover letter which I believe
shows my conviction for their cause while drawing attention to my resume, which I ordered based on
their desired applicant abilities. When their human resources manager gives my application the six
second perusal, I intend for them to notice qualities and experiences which will extend the perusal and
ultimately lead to an interview.
