Jessie, a resident of Hopatcong for the
past 14 years, has been landscaping and
servicing lawns for the past 27 years. He got
involved in the business with a friend right
after graduating high school in 1984.
“I like to help serve the community and I

Netcong ShopRite Employees are Partners in Caring

“P
artners in Caring”, it’s a phrase
that people may see when shop-
ping at the Netcong ShopRite.
However, what does it mean?
For local food pantries, like the ones at
the Stanhope United Methodist Church, 1st
Presbyterian Church of Sparta, the Sussex
YMCA, and DASI, it means that the
Shoprite is helping to feed people in the
local community. For the past several
weeks, the employees of the Netcong
ShopRite have been raising funds by putting
“carnival”.
How does the Shoprite’s effort translate
into support for the Netcong church’s food
pantry?
“Their gifts of money to the Norwescap
food pantry in Philipsburg enables us to
purchase food in quantities at a lesser price.
The money raised from bake sales, which is
an employee project, is divided among the
three churches they support and the help
they give.” explained Marion Rush of
Netcong. Rush heads the food pantry proj-

While Shoprite ran the bake sale, it also
reached out to the church to partner with it
by providing some bake goods and volun-
teers to work the sales. For the book sale,

from some customers and others, to sell

who are having a tough time to care for their

The Netcong ShopRite’s employees have
shown a true commitment to help the area
through Partners in Caring.
“Partners in Caring is a very fine project
for the community,” said Rush.

A Jobs Strategy That Both
Parties Can Agree On

W
e're nearly three years into the
recession -- and our economy still
shows few signs of life. The
Department of Labor just announced that
the country shed 131,000 jobs in July.
Unemployment now stands at 9.5 percent.
It's not surprising that Democrats and
Republicans agree that something must be
done -- soon -- to stem the loss of jobs.
Neither side, though, has offered a creative
or comprehensive jobs strategy to turn the
economy around. There is one strategy that
could create jobs and generate support from
both sides of the aisle: Biotech Innovation.
"Over the long run, few issues are as
important to a nation's long-term economic
security and global standing as being a
leader in moving life sciences forward,"
says Lawrence Summers, director of the
White House's National Economic Council.
He's right. Innovation in biotechnology
is the engine that could get our economy
back on track. Yet neither party has force-
fully championed this idea, even though it's
one of the few ideas that would elicit bipar-
tisan support.
Enacting policies that will help this
industry thrive is a painless way to create
the jobs Americans desperately need. It's
also a strategy on which lawmakers on both
sides of the aisle can cooperate.
Biotechnology is racing along while the
rest of the economy sputters. During the
first year of the current recession, private-
sector employment decreased by 0.7 per-
cent. Employment in the biosciences, how-
ever, increased by 1.4 percent.
It's not just PhDs who are finding jobs in
the industry. Research, testing, and med-
icals labs employed 2.1 percent more peo-
ple in that time. The medical devices and
equipment sector increased its workforce by
2.4 percent. The area of agricultural feed-

It’s All About ABC 123 Childcare Center

t’s not all “ABC” and “1, 2, 3” at ABC
123 Childcare Center in Netcong.
Developing social skills and self esteem
at an early age marks high above the rest.
The pre-school and pre-K programs at
the center is a structured environment and
children will learn the essential skills – such
as numbers, letters and geography – to
ready themselves for kindergarten. They do
learn through play to encourage socializa-
tion and build their confidence.
“Socialization is far more the most
important,” says Elaine Gorgia,
owner/director of ABC123 Childcare
Center. “We have to build their self-esteem.
I don’t want teachers to say ‘you are doing
it wrong.’” What’s more important is that a
“child feel worthy, not embarrassed. We
kneel down and talk to them eye to eye.
“It’s really important to me that these
kids feel good about themselves,” continues
Gorgia. Their self-esteem and socialization
is more important to me rather than ABC
and 1, 2, 3. They’ll learn how to cope better

develops are making our lives better and
longer -- pharmaceuticals have reduced
heart attack mortality by more than half.
Agricultural biotech is increasing crop
yields, bringing down food costs, and
reducing disease. These technologies help
millions - across the world.
So what can lawmakers do to foster
innovation?
First, Congress could make the R&D tax
credit permanent. This provision was
included in the president's budget last year,
but didn't make it through. This is some-
thing on which Democrats and Republicans
see eye-to-eye -- politicians from both par-
ties have voted regularly to extend the tem-
porary tax. Making it permanent would pro-
vide a long-term incentive for investors to
put more money into the sector. An already-
growing industry could explode.
Lawmakers should also enact a payroll
tax holiday. This would encourage private-
sector employers in the biotech community
to make new hires and retain current
employees.
Long term, we must ensure the industry
can fill the jobs thus created. We need to
foster the next generation of scientific
researchers -- perhaps the ones who will
discover a cure for cancer -- by improving
math and science education in our nation's
schools.
The National Center for Education
Statistics compared 15-year-olds around the
world last year, and discovered that
American students were below average in
math and science. Students in other coun-
tries are improving their performance in
these crucial subjects, while ours simply
stay steady. American high school students
are in the bottom quarter in math, trailing
the rising China.
In future years, our country's thriving
industry of innovation could find itself
increasingly competing for investment dol-
lars headed to Asia. Between 1986 and
2003, the U.S. share of global R&D invest-
ment declined from 46 percent to 37 per-
cent. Even more striking -- our share of sci-
entific researchers fell from 41 percent to
just 29 percent. We must stay competitive in
the arena we've dominated up to now.
Biotechnology is the future of the
American economy. Other industries are
innovating, too, of course. But biotech is a
rare bright spot in this gloomy recession.
Passing consensus-driven, bipartisan poli-
cies to boost what might be our fastest
growing sector will create jobs and save
lives.

Established more than two years ago in
June 2008, ABC123 Childcare Center offers
a caring and learning environment for chil-
dren infants through four-years old. The
school is open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
and all the teachers are four-year degreed
and CPA certified. Children are from vari-
ous towns such as Mount Olive, Dover,
Rockaway, Stanhope and Byram.
Preschool and pre-kindergarten classes
are held in the mornings from September
through June, and before and after care all
year long. Although the curriculum ends in
June for the preschool and pre-k, a summer
program is offered from July through
August. Themes vary by each week, with
for example a visit from Noah’s Ark; and JJ
the Balloon Guys who created balloon
sculptures for the kids.
Five infants are currently enrolled full-
time at the center and they enjoy “tummy
time.” The “open door policy,” allow par-
ents to walk in during the day at any time to
check on their child.
In the toddler room are six toddlers aged
one year to 18 months. “The goal is to stim-
ulate their learning through play,” says
Gorgia. “They walk in happy and leave
happy.”
In the pre-school program, five kids ages
2.5 and 3.5 year old currently meet for play-
time; circle time with singing ABC’s, learn-
ing numbers and about the calendar; a daily
project; and outdoor time.
From September through June, sched-
uled visitors are invited to ABC123 such as
Art Magic which allows students to partici-
pate in a special art project for a nominal fee
with a local artist; a monthly sing-along
with a guitarist; and The Fun Bus in which
children can participate twice monthly in
gym and physical activities inside a bus also
for a nominal fee.
Currently enrolled in the pre-K program
are four, 4-year old students who are expe-
riencing “a more structured environment
but also learning though play,” says Gorgia,
and hands-on learning of the letters, print-
ing their names and geography.
Parents and grandparents are also invited
to be a storyteller and read to students dur-
ing their school day.
“I want families to be involved with my
center,” she says. “I encourage it.”

Childcare Center for school or childcare
because of its “family” atmosphere, afford-
able tuition and special programs.
“The people that are in there become so
attached to the children…we are like a fam-
ily in there,” says Gorgia. “People say ‘it
feels really nice’ and they say ‘wow you
guys really care about the children.’ I want
to make it feel like home.”
Although the rates are set, Gorgia works
one on one with each family regarding
tuition. She accepts state vouchers and com-
plies with all state regulations.
As a mother of four boys, Gorgia of
Succasunna says she has always had an
interest in working with children. She used
to volunteer at a local day care in Mendham
as well as a day care center in Succasunna
before opening her own center in Netcong.
“I love what I’m doing,” says Gorgia.
“It’s a passion. I love working with the chil-
dren and the parents. We work with each
other. There’s a lot of love and considera-
tion working with parents and the children.
There’s a lot of one on one.
“It’s rewarding,” she continues. “You
open the door and you have these little chil-

October will not be charged the registration
fee or security deposit. Students will also
get to enjoy a new playground this year at
the center.

Petcasso to Benefit Animals in Need

ed more, maybe a splash of color?
Perhaps a little more “paw” in the
corner? Applying some paint to his paws,
friends helped Buddy to position them just
right. Perfect! A Masterpiece!
Buddy, the dog, and friends will be put-
ting their works of art up for auction as part
of Noah’s Ark’s Petcasso. Held on Sunday,
September 26, 2010 from 4pm-7pm at the
Skylands at Randolph, the third annual
Petcasso is a fundraiser for the animal shel-
ter. Tickets are $100;for tickets, contact

“Petcasso features original ‘masterpaw-
ces’ created by current shelter animals,
alumni, and local pets that will be auctioned
off at fixed pricing by auctioneer Colonel
Dennis G. Cassidy, “ said Lauren R. Swern,
Development Director of Noah’s Ark
“Painting sessions with the animals take
place from April through September to pro-
duce stunning works of art for the
event…..After thoroughly covering a floor
with a tarp, painting canvas is placed on the
floor and a variety of easy wash off colorful
paint is applied to a leashed dog’s or cat’s
walk, run or romp across the canvas. Event
sponsor Pooch Spa and Pet Grooming Plus
provides grooming sessions once the paint-
ings are done. ,” she added.
While about 10 paintings will be includ-
ed in the live auction, additional ones in
various sizes will be on sale as well as other
items including note cards, bookmarks, and
the canvas that was used when the artists
created their "masterpawces.
The artwork includes a photo and a story
about the artist (such as Buddy, who’s lost a
leg ). Swern noted that, in the past, those
adoptable animal artists whose work was
featured have all been adopted.
Several shelters across the country do
similar Petcasso fundraisers, including
Animal Trustees of Austin. A friend of
Noah’s Ark got the shelter in touch with the
ATA and the local Petcasso came to be.
Besides auctioning the original Petcasso
Masterpieces, Swern noted the other aspects
of the fundraiser. Guests are invited to enjoy
hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, and a buffet
dinner while listening to the sounds of

September 11, 2001 Never Forget
P
eople memories are a funny thing. We can recall
things that happened 30 plus years ago but can’t
remember what happened yesterday.
Every time I see a deep blue sky without a cloud my
memory triggers back to September 11 2001.
For people of my generation it was the worst attack and
the first attack on our mainland.
Everyone that I know (being from the New York area at
that time) can remember with detail where they were, what
they were doing and when they heard the news.
I for one can recall getting ready to drive to the airport
for a conference when my editor said that a plane hit the
tower. I thought a small plan hit and that I should hurry to
get to the airport. Then she yelled again that a second plane
hit the other tower. A few minutes later while listening to
the radio they said a plane hit the Pentagon, then a plane
crashed in Pennsylvania. It was at that moment I thought we
are under attack.
We all left the office and ran to my house to watch it on
television. It was minutes later that we witnessed one of the
most horrifying scenes. The Towers collapsed. The feeling
that came me at that time I can still feel today. The feeling
of fear and sadness for what those people went through the
final minutes before the falling towers.
Today I still have that fear. We are under attack by peo-
ple who do not like us in fact hate us.
A that time in 2001 people joined together. Democrats,
Republicans and all races came together in unison to stand
up for America. People reached out to help, send donations

and do what they can in a time of crisis.
Our President took control and made the people feel bet-
ter with his strong leadership and words that we would get
who did this to us.
Americans were unified like nothing I have ever scene or
will see in my lifetime.
Flag were flying everywhere. People we patriotic and
expressed that we as
Americans will not take this and the people that did this
will not get away.
So what has happened since 2001?
The country is divided like never before and most of all
people forgot.
Listening to people who are in favor of the Mosque
being built in New York near the site of the Towers saying
“ Come on it is 2011” things should change sicken me
because of the insensitivity. Yes they have every right to
build a Mosque where they want to from a legal and consti-
tutional standpoint. But from a common sense standpoint
and by saying they want to repair relationships between
Muslims and others no way.
What happened in that past 9 years that people simply
forget? Why is there so much hatred for the United States?
Americans seem to forget that unified we will succeed by
divided we will fall.
We are on that path now of falling apart. We have lead-
ership that is not America friendly and quite frankly not
even sure our President is American. I do not say that light-
ly. A simple birth certificate produced would have solved all
the speculation.
People in general are more into trying to get along than
to do what is right for this country.
911 caused many deaths. For many in the New York area
almost anyone you speak to knew someone who died in the
Towers. Those tragic memories will haunt us forever.
This is a day that should never be forgotten. We have
days for Washington’s Birthday, Martin Luther King Day
and holidays. We need a day to remember the attack on this
country. This should be a teaching point to our students of
who did this and why. Extreme Muslims who do not like
our way of life, do not like freedom do not like what
America stands for attacked as after living amongst us.
They planned with detail on how to kill thousands of peo-
ple in a coordinated attack on us. They hate our way of life
and we need not to be tolerant but beware. Given the chance
they will do it again and again.
We cannot forget what made America great. It is not the
party affiliation. It is being a Patriot and American and
believing the freedom that we have and what America
stands for. September 11, 2001 will be a day that I will
never forget or would want to forget. It is a day that showed
me the enemy that lives with us and in our everyday lives.
Americans better wake up and realize that we need to
make a stand to protect what we have enjoyed so future
generations will have the same freedom we have.
Unfortunately given the direction the country has taken
the past few years there may be no saving it.
God Bless America and God Bless the families that lost
loved ones on September 11, 2001.

ever be euthanized due to age or breed and
that there is no time limit placed on an ani-
mal’s stay at the shelter. Noah’s Ark is
doing everything we can to encourage
responsible pet ownership, including
humane education and outreach programs
to local schools and organizations. We are
also doing our part to fight pet overpopula-
tion by maintaining a Spay-Neuter hotline
that gives pet owners access to discounted
spay-neuter services voluntarily provided
by a network of over 20 veterinarians in our
community. But if we are to expand our
programs, reach more people and help more
animals, we need more funding – and we
need the community’s help.”

For Young Thomas Edison Ther Was No Going Back To School

T
oday Thomas Edison would have
been a gifted child misdiagnosed
with ADHD - Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder. Although they did
not have this diagnosis in his day, at the age
of 7 his formal classroom teacher Reverend
G. B. Engle told Edison’s mother Nancy
Edison that after 3 months of schooling her
son was an “addled” student. The definition
of addled is a confused or muddled person.
Rev Engle noted he was a dull student who
often needed a whipping for questioning his
teacher out of turn and he lagged behind in
his math studies. Infuriated by the practice
of whipping a child as a teaching aid, Nancy
Edison pulled young Thomas out of school
to be home schooled. Edison would have a
brief stint with two other schools. He once
again was labeled a behavioral problem and
dropped from those schools as well.
With her own background in teaching,
Nancy Edison became her son’s primary
educator. It was she who developed the
foundation of his education. She acknowl-
edged her son’s brilliance despite the
school’s evaluation of him. Nancy Edison
supplied her son with all the books that he
could read and he was a passionate reader.
Before he was 12, he had read the works of
Dickens, Shakespeare and the complete six
volumes of “The History of the Decline and
Fall of the Roman Empire” by English his-
torian Edward Gibbon. This was quite an
endeavor for an “addled” student. Nancy
Edison believed in freethinking education
through self exploration. She encouraged
her son’s curious nature to learn things on
his own and did not force him to learn
things he didn't enjoy.
When he was 10 years old after reading
an elementary science book of how to do
chemistry experiments at home, he built his
first science laboratory in the family base-
ment. Nancy kept plying him with more sci-
ence books especially on chemistry.
Chemistry was his first love and Edison
spent all his spare money buying chemicals,
bottles, and wires for his childhood experi-
ments. His chemistry experiments contin-
ued even when he had his first paying job.
He was a 12 year old train boy (pre child
labor law days) on the Grand Trunk
Railway selling newspapers and candy to
passengers. He also printed a weekly news-
paper - the Weekly Herald. What wages he
earned, he spent on books and supplies for
his chemical laboratory. After a year on the
job he earned permission to move his home
science laboratory to the train baggage car.
During a five-hour layover in Detroit,
Edison found out that chemistry experi-
ments and train travel was a volatile mix.
The train lurched, spilled chemicals, and his
baggage car lab caught fire. After this
episode, he was relegated to selling newspa-
pers at stations along the railroad instead of
inside the passenger cars.
His home schooling, learning through
self exploration and Life Experience would
form his opinions on adult education.
Holding a college degree did not impress
Edison who did not have one. He held
degrees in Life Experience education.
Edison respected people who attained world
knowledge. Edison believed his managers
should have a broad knowledge of the world
and they had to submit to a lengthy test on
general world knowledge before they were
offered a position in his company regardless
of their university degrees. Many failed his
test and were denied employment. Only six
percent passed his test which he graded
himself.
The National Park Service has made a
fun simulation of this employment test on
their website. The quiz is a much shorter
version of this test with multiple choice
answers (not available on the original ver-
sion). The original test included 150 ques-

Antonini Restaurant and Pizzeria in Budd Lake opened
four months ago in May and offers an extensive menu from
appetizers, to pan and traditional-thin crust pizzas, chicken,
veal and seafood entrees as well as numerous pasta special-
ties. It is located at the Lakeview Plaza on Route 46 east
right across from the lake.
“The food is great,” says manger Sammy, who goes by
his first name. “The quality that we use is top of the line, the
cheese, the sauces, the vegetables. It’s even what I hear
from the people….that the food is great, that it’s incredi-
ble.”

$16.95 at Antoninis, and 14 inch small pizzas are also avail-

For Bread Pudding:
PREHEAT oven to 400? F. Grease six 6-
