HOMEWORK 5
Q.1) The 5.5 [𝑘𝑔] disk A has a radius 𝑟𝐴 = 15.2 [𝑐𝑚] and an initial angular velocity 𝜔
⃗0=
750 [𝑟𝑝𝑚](↻) The 13.5 [𝑘𝑔] disk B has a radius 𝑟𝐵 = 25.4 [𝑐𝑚] and is at rest. A force 𝑃⃗ =
22.3 [𝑁](←) is then applied to bring the disks into contact. Knowing that 𝜇𝑘 = 0.25
between the disks and neglecting bearing friction, determine (a) the angular acceleration
of each disk, (b) the final angular velocity of each disk.

1
Q.2) The 4.5 [𝑘𝑔] uniform rod ABD is attached to the crank BC and is fitted with a small
wheel that can roll without friction along a vertical slot. Knowing that at the instant shown
crank BC rotates with an angular velocity of 6 [𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠] clockwise and an angular
acceleration of 15 [𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 2 ] counter-clockwise, determine the reaction at A.

Q.3) The cranks BE and CF are made to rotate at constant speed of 90 [rpm] counter-
clockwise. Determine and plot the vertical components of the forces exerted on the
5.4 [𝑘𝑔] uniform rod ABCD by pins B and C as functions of the angles 𝜃 from 0 to 2𝜋.

HOMEWORK 6
Q.1) A uniform sphere of radius r is placed at corner A and is given a slight clockwise
motion. Assuming that the corner is sharp and becomes slightly embedded in the sphere,
so that the coefficient of static friction at A is very large, determine (a) the angle 𝛽 through
which the sphere will have rotated when it loses contact with the corner, (b) the
corresponding velocity of the center of sphere.

Q.2) The 4 [𝑘𝑔] rod AB can slide freely inside the 6 [𝑘𝑔] tube CD. The rod was entirely
within the tube (𝑥 = 0) and released with no initial velocity relative to the tube when the
angular velocity of the assembly was 5 [𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠]. Neglecting the effect of friction, determine
the speed of the rod relative to the tube when 𝑥 = 400 [𝑚𝑚].

3
Q.3) A uniform slender rod AB of length 𝐿 = 600 [𝑚𝑚] is placed with its center
equidistant from two supports that are located at a distance 𝑏 = 100 [𝑚𝑚] from each
other. End B of the rod is raised a distance ℎ0 = 80 [𝑚𝑚] and released; the rod then rocks
on the supports as shown. Assuming that the impact at each support is perfectly plastic
and that no slipping occurs between the rod and the supports, determine (a) the height
ℎ1 reached by end A after the first impact, (b) the height ℎ2 reached by end B after the
second impact.
