6/3/2018 7 Practical Bible Study Tips for the Easily Distracted

Being easily distracted, especially when it comes to studying our Bible,

is not something anyone wants to admit. But for some of us, it’s a real
struggle.

Those of us with a “rich inner life,” have so much going on inside of our
heads that it’s not uncommon for a certain words or events to trigger a
random thought we had once—six years ago.

We are the type B’s, and we are a little bit messy, a little scattered-
brained, a lot misunderstood.

To be honest, I love my type-b, introverted, high-sensitive, rich inner

mind-self. But it does have some negatives. Sometimes I really want to
focus on one thing, but I nd it hard to stop my brain from going a

thousands di erent ways.

Studying my Bible is one of those things. I wish I could shut o the

creative, overprocessing, thinking about what I said to that one person
nine years ago self. And because it’s important to me and because I
know my proclivity towards unproductive multitasking, I’ve come up
with some ways to work around my distracted tendencies.

If you struggle with this, too, read on, kindred soul!

extra cost to you.

7 Practical Bible Study Tips for the

Easily Distracted
1. Prayer
I begin every Bible study by asking God to help me focus and to calm
my mind. Sometimes it’s as simple as reciting Psalm 119:18:

“ Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your

law.

Other times I journal everything that it is on my mind. Every fear,

every person I want to pray for, every call I need to make, and
then I give over the worry and that brain space to God asking Him
once again to help me focus on Him.

Regardless of what my prayer looks like, it’s a signal to my brain and

my soul that this time is sacred, and I need to ask God to assist me in
honoring that.

2. 1 Specific Study (and a side study)

Unless you are particularly focused, it’s hard to sit down and study
your Bible without a plan. The Bible is vast, and can feel overwhelming
if you don’t have any idea of how to begin.

I’ve found it helpful to follow some sort of plan. I have found some
plans that work really great for me and others not so much. My best
suggestion would be to try out a few plans to gure our your sweet
spot

https://www.kelseymferguson.com/7-practical-bible-study-tips-easily-distracted/ 5/29
6/3/2018 7 Practical Bible Study Tips for the Easily Distracted

spot.

But for me. . .

I’m a big fan of She Reads Truth (http://shereadstruth.com/). They

provide the topic and the Scripture reading and an optional devotional.
You get to do what you want with it. Sometimes I journal whatever
thoughts popped into my head, other times I look up Scripture
references, or I pray the words over my life. Flexibility in application
works best for me.

I also nd there are times when I can’t focus enough to do my main

study. Instead of skipping out on Bible study altogether, I have a side
study. My “side study” is merely copying down Scripture in my journal.

It’s is helpful for the easily distracted since you have to read the
sentence and then read it again as you write it.

3. Accountability
While I don’t use accountability in a traditional sense, I still nd it highly
useful in encouraging myself to focus. Instead of having to check in
with someone—something I really struggle with—I follow the same
plan as others. For me knowing I’m on target with others is enough
accountability.

This is another reason, I love She Reads Truth. I’m studying Scripture
with thousands of other women, and I can read their comments about
today’s study. If I’m so inclined, I can join in on the conversation, too.

My third tip is once you gure out which Bible study works best for
you, gure out what form of accountability keeps you most focused.

4 Minimize Distractions

4. Minimize Distractions
I realize this one probably goes without saying, but it would seem silly
not to mention it in this post. Some of the ways I minimize distractions
are:

1. Not turning on my computer until I do my Bible study. If my

computer is on, there is very little chance that I will focus.
2. I don’t charge my phone overnight, instead I plug it in rst thing in
the morning. I know that this tip might not be practical for you,
but it has done wonders for my distractiveness.

5. Routine
While the word “schedule” may make your break out in hives, routines
don’t seem nearly as bad. I’ve found that having a routine can be
one of the best things for my easily-distracted self, especially
69 when it comes to Bible study.
Shares

When I begin my routine of turning on the co ee maker, lling up a

66
glass with water, getting out my Bible and my favorite pen, sitting in my
special chair, my brain starts making the connection about what is
3
going to happen next. When I break out of this routine, I am much
more scattered-brained when I try to study God’s Word.

6. Helpful Tools
Even in the best circumstances (which don’t always happen because
children . . .), I still have to ght to remain on task. I start thinking about
what I need to do, a blog post idea pops in into my head, or a random
anxiety makes itself known.

I’ve learned to surround myself with helpful tools to quickly and

e ectively purge the idea from my head and carry on with my study.

1 I keep a set of post it notes next to me I’m currently using these

https://www.kelseymferguson.com/7-practical-bible-study-tips-easily-distracted/ 7/29

1. I keep a set of post-it notes next to me. I m currently using these

because cute
(http://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/7163817/type/dlg/http://www.day
spring.com/sadierobertsonbeyourselfstickynoteset)!
2. I also use this to-do list notepad (https://amzn.to/21MofSc) that
has a place for pretty much everything I could think of that needs
to be done, bought, or made.

7. Grace
Despite all of these wonderful tips that have truly transformed my
Bible study from a time of frustration to rich deep communion with
God, sometimes nothing seems to help me focus.

I’m learning to except these times for what they are—a blatant
demonstration of my deep need for grace and mercy.

While I hope you can use a few of these tips to help your own Bible
study, most of all I want you to know how loved and cherished you are
—just as you are.

God isn’t surprised by your scattered brain or your awkwardness or

your weird quirks. He loves you. He made you. And His grace is for you,
too. Grace isn’t for the perfect.

No matter what your Bible study looks like or your prayer life or
your attempt at a Church community you are unconditionally and
irrevocably loved by an unchanging, all-powerful God.

Love all these tips! The best one for me is to focus before touching a computer! I can
easily get distracted and chasing rabbit trails and before I know it, the time I have is
gone.

#2-3 are so big for me. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with reading Scripture and just
don’t know where to jump in. Having a plan with some guides and commentary is so

You’re welcome, Lauren! I have tried to “wing it” with my Bible studies, and I
always walked away feeling frustrated with myself. I think it’s amazing that some
people are able to simply open their Bible to any page and dig in. I need a plan,
though! One thing that has helped me with accountability is that I know my mom
is up reading her Bible, too. We may not be studying the same thing, but we are
both up together learning God’s Word. Thanks for stopping by and
commenting, Lauren!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks, Katy! She Reads Truth has many options to getting involved. For each
study they create an optional workbook you can buy, they have the free Scripture
readings and devotional on their site, and they also have an app for iOS and
Android. I have done a little bit of all three! I subscribe to get their daily
devotional sent to my e-mail, and I usually purchase the workbooks for the bigger
studies: Advent, Lent, etc. . .

The comment section on their blog is always lled with wonderful insight and
women chatting with each other. They are also big on Instagram, where people
share their thoughts with #SheReadsTruth. If you are looking for a small group, I
think it’s something that you would have to start with your friends. They provide
the material for it, though! Hopefully that answers your question!

Loving this post. That is me down to a tee. I am easily distracted in school and just
about everyday activities. Consequently, I am extremely distracted when attempted
to read my bible and have prayer time. My mind is going a thousand miles an hour
and thinking about everything but what I’m trying to focus on. I’m glad to see it’s not
just me (which means I’m not as crazy I think I am). Excellent and helpful post.

Thanks for the blessing of this entry. Most of them I’ve been doing, but you’ve taken
each one a little farther. Numbers 3 and 7 were new for me and will require some
thinking and praying about how to make them mine, but I think both are things I
want to try.

Thank you for all of these great tips! Keeping a post-it note handy to write down any
ideas or anxieties that pop into your head as your reading is such a good idea. My
biggest distraction has always been the o -topic thoughts and worries that come to
my mind when I least want to deal with them. I like the idea of quickly writing them
down and then continuing with reading. Journalling all your anxieties and then giving
them to God in prayer is something I wish I wouldve thought of ages ago. Im glad I
came across this post. Thank you very much for your help!

I’m so glad you found this post helpful, Kayla!

My brain always comes up with ideas and worries—or remembers something I

was supposed to do yesterday—at the most inconvenient times. Writing it down
is usually enough for me to be able to focus, again. But sometimes, I realize it
needs to be done, right now. And there’s grace for that. The Bible doesn’t give us
the exact way to write His Word on our hearts. It just tells us to do it.

God knows we all learn di erently and will experience His Word in di erent ways
—reading it in large chunks, studying it verse by verse, listening to it, in a group,
alone, etc…

All that to say thank you for commenting!

Hi, Kacy!

One of the most powerful statements is “me too.” And I’m so glad you were able
to have that moment here. You are de nitely not alone! Our brilliant, creative
minds are constantly trying to make connections and remind us of important
things. Usually this is a great thing, but it’s hard when we’ve been told the only
way to study God’s Word is through 100% attention. But that’s not the Truth. And
God knows us—intimately. He created us!

Thank you so much for commenting. I hope you have a great week!!

These are some great tips. What I found that helps when I’m distracted during any
kind of praying (Bible study or otherwise) is to ask God to remove that distraction. If it
comes up again, I ask Him to remove the distraction. If it comes up a third time, I pray
through that distraction. I’ve discovered that what may seem like a distraction could
actually be God talking to me, but if it isn’t important in the moment, he’ll remove the
distraction.

YES! Well said. I’m a “seasoned” woman, following the LORD for a long time, and I
discovered the power of post-it notes forever ago! All of these are great. And for a
type B, thanks for keeping the list short and usable. My favorite is the Grace! Yes. I
always think about a practice that Ruth Graham’s daughter wrote about her… When
the Graham children were young, Ruth was pretty much raising them alone. Billy, of
course traveled all the time. The ve children added to a busy house. Gigi remembers
that her mom would open the Bible and read a few verses and concentrate on them
all day. This means she concentrated on them when she was cooking, ironing (!!!) and
any other household chores. As the children grew Ruth got more time to spend with
the Lord. In my heart what makes me most happy is the idea that Ruth Graham, a
“giant” in the LORD, gave herself the grace to understand that she could receive from
the Lord even little Snippets… until the day she could nally add to her time with him.
It’s so important to remember that word. Thank you again for your wisdom, and for
sharing. I’m glad I stumbled upon your blog
