Abstract

On this piece of written paper, I will make a small analysis of the first 10 hours of observation at the

school where I performed duties as a teacher in service. This draft was made after a sequence of events that

show the history of the school, mission, vision, values and photos of the institution; and on the second part, I

will post the academy profile of the teacher advisor, teacher in service and the analysis of the teacher while

This is my School

2. School History (Gimansio Militar Fuerza Aerea, 2003)

This school was created by some Officers and Enlisted in 1970. They wanted to have a school on

base. For that reason, the members of the Apiay Air Force Base proposed through the social welfare board

to the Ministry of Education to solve a personnel necessity. They wanted to have a full-day school during

work hours for their children. This situation would allow the Officers and Enlisted not to commute, having a

lot of security and no worries about having their children studying in another place. GIMFA School was

named from the beginning with the name of the Air Base “Luis F. Gómez Niño”, who was an illustrative

aviator from Santander. He was born in 1907.

Actually, this school has 12 classrooms where kids from kinder garden through 11th grade. It has

sports sceneries to develop physical training and exercises. This institution by the end of 2017 will have

built the professor´s lounge, a laboratory and a multi-sports field. It will contribute the educational process

in the institution which is an official school that receives support from the secretary of education.

3. My Advisor Teacher Profile:

3.1. Advisor Teacher:

Lic. Luz Adriana Daza

My teacher advisor holds a Bachelors´ Degree in English, and she is from Colombia but she

is eager to learn languages and she loves teaching to others. She likes having fun during classes, so

her classes are very interesting. She tries to have confidence each other, so the barrier between

teacher and student trend to fade (Snell, sf). As a matter of fact, she avoids having a passive class, as

Snell J. said that a passive class is a problem when teaching a foreign language. She has a

characteristic of being another student in class, so it gives the students a friendly environment inside

the classroom. The interaction is done as a student centered class, which gives the opportunity to

participate actively during in her class. According to her method of teaching by principles (Brown,

2001), she doesn’t hesitate to follow a meaningful learning in which it creates retention by using

previous structures. This method demonstrates that their backgrounds must be on the table, it means

that the process will be a long term information.

3.2.Discipline:

English Teacher at Gimnasio Militar Luis F. Gomez Niño.

3.3.Rapport:

Teaching is a complex procedure during a class time, but this activity is easy when using a

perfect rapport (Harper, 2007); while performing the classes, the teacher has not only an impressive

management but also stablishes a relationship where the students feel comfortable to participate and

they absorbs as much as they can. All of this allows the students trigger their spark to learn. On the

other hand, the teacher shows a lot of respect to the students and they act the same way back. That

situation shows the adaptability of the teacher to different personalities of the students.
12

3.4.Method of teaching: What kind of teaching methods the teacher is using in his

classes?

She tries to include all skills, and also applies as Harper mentioned in his book “How to Teach

English” using the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Having the absolute management of the class,

the professor pushes the students to achieve their objectives in class. Those objectives are written at

the beginning of the class, and they have to be reachable for the students. When the students see

how they absorb the language, they act positively and their input rises.

3.5.Personality:

How is his personality?, Is she a happy teacher? Is she a nice teacher?

My advisor teacher is an easy going person, and she has an activity ready to be used, so her

classes involve the students, making them participate actively. She uses a specific language

according to the academic discourse and style, having as a reference (Jordan, 2014), implementing

vocabulary related to the topic. She uses the visual method; as a result, the students quickly recall

the meaning of the objects that they manipulate in class. As a technique, she uses examples of real

life, and those resources have a direct meaning easy to digest by the students. When she arrives to

class, she has always something in mind.

4. My students Profile

In this class, we find 20 students. They are in 10th grade. Their average range of age is about 14 years

old. There are a few students that hold a B1 and the others hold an A1-A2 level. They like to study English,

but there is girl who doesn’t understand anything. It seems that they enjoy the classes, and they love videos.

Another good thing is that they love to make expositions in English, so the teacher takes that for granted and

ask them to do that.
