Theme: Education - TKAM
The theme of literature often points out some universal truth about the human experience; therefore,
comparing your own experiences with the experiences present in a text can help you identify and analyze
different themes.
Look back at chapters two and three of TKAM. Complete the following Venn Diagram comparing the problems
with Scout’s educational experience with the problems you see with the modern educational system. Cite
specific evidence from the text. Aim for three bullet points per section. If you are having trouble,
consider the following questions:
● Are assessments like MCAS necessary? Do these tests accurately reflect every student’s abilities?
● Should schools moves away from the traditional generalized education and give students the
opportunity to choose what they want to learn?
● Do most lessons, tests, projects, etc. meet the needs of all types of learners? Or are they strict and
limiting to students? Are students with different abilities treated fairly?
● What changes need to be made to the way we traditionally think about education?
When you are finished with the diagram, answer the following question in 3-5 sentences using one quote
from the text: What is the author of TKAM saying about education in general?
