(Hino) e a bandeira

Hello ( good morning). My name is Xavier and I´m going to introduce Irland - the Emerald
Isle in the Union economic.
Irland is a single island in the North Atlantic
◦ is situated next to Britain,
◦ and there are two countries on the island. (Republic of Ireland and North Ireland)
◦ The Republic of Ireland is an independent state
◦ Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.
◦ we can see the Irish border established in 1920 by the United Kingdom Parliament.
- …. Km
- ….. people

It is surrounded by:
 land border with Northern Ireland, to the North
 the Atlantic Ocean from east,
 with the Celtic Sea to the south,
 Saint George's Channel to the south-east,
 and the Irish Sea to the east.

- The capital is Dublin.

. the main cities are after Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway e Waterford.

The flag

It´s a vertical tricolor flag of green, white and orange.

- The green symbolizes Roman Catholics,
- The orange represents the minority Protestants.
- The white in the center represents peace between Protestants and Catholics in
Ireland.

Ireland has some curiosities and customs that I will present:

Security:
- Dublin is one of the safest cities in the world.
- To give you an idea, the police there do not use guns.
- No arms but water !
- Dublin has one of the largest libraries in the world.
- It has a collection that revolves around 200,000 titles.

◦ Ireland has won seven times the Eurovision Song Contest (in 1970, 1980, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994 and
1996), more than any other country.

- TEE
For them, the key to long life is to stop smoking and drink more tea.
- They used :
- Tee
- Tee and milk
- Tee and cofee
- Tee before, tee after some thing

COLORED DOORS

Curiously, Ireland has colored doors in almost all of their homes.

There are two legends that justify this custom:
The first one says : Queen Victoria, after the death of Prince Albert decreed a black flag to all Irish
houses. The next day, in protest, an Irishman painted the door of his house with a cheerful color and
was copied by hundreds of Irishmen.
The second explanation is:, it was easier to identify their residence when mens returned drunkards
home.

Pubs:
There are Irish pubs everywhere
- The Irish town with most pubs per person has 1 pub for every 26 people.
- In Dublin there is a ratio of one pub per 100 people.
- Irish people don’t like to drink at home; they prefer to socialize at the pub, while eating,
listening to traditional music or watching a Gaelic game on TV.

Beer:
- they produce one of the best beers in the world – Guinness is one of the most appreciated
beers worldwide

Irish Breakfast:
farinha.

Words :

- They say ‘sorry’ all the time, even when ‘sorry’ make no sense or it´s your fault not mine!
- Thank you it´s another word very used.
- Not too bad. When someone say Hello. How are you… or other think … they ansewer all the time: Not
too bad. That’s the same to say OK.
Sports:

- Together with football and rugby, hurling is the sport most important to
Ireland. It is very similar to field hockey . Two teams of 15 players each utilizing
a hurley (a long wooden stick) driving a ball of cork.
- Another reason Ireland is proud is because is one of the best Rugby teams in
the world, is the fifth best ragby team in the world among the 101 teams.

Saint Patrick's Day:

- Saint Patrick´s is the foremost patron saint of Ireland.
- He was born on Scotland.
- at the age of 16 was brought to North Ireland as a slave.
- 12 years later he escape and return to his country but he had a vision and returned to
Ireland to spread the word of Christianity.
- To explain the trinity to the pagan Irish he used the green shamrock: Only one plant
with 3 pétalas. Cada pétala was Father Son and Holy Spirit.
- Later, In 1903, St Patrick's Day became an official public holiday in the Republic of
Ireland and Northern Ireland.
- Saint Patrick's Day, is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the death
date of Saint Patrick.

. The first St Patrick's Day parade in Ireland was held in Waterford in 1903.

. On St Patrick's Day, it is customary to wear shamrocks, green clothing or green

accessories because Saint Patrick used the green shamrock, to explain the Holy Trinity.

.Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, Irish traditional music
sessions, a lot lot lot lot of beer and everything from buildings to rivers goes gren.

. In Dublin, buildins and bridges all over the city are illuminated green also.

. St Patrick's Day custom of "drowning the shamrock" was popular, especially in Ireland.
At the end of the celebrations, a shamrock is put into the bottom of a cup, which is then
filled with whiskey or beer. It is then drunk as a toast to St Patrick, Ireland, or those
present.

Legend saiys that St. Patrick drove all of the snakes out of Ireland but it´s untrue. Ireland
is completely surrounded by water, making it improper for snakes. The same is true for
New Zealand, Greenland, and many other islands.

SYmbol:

- The green shamrock is the most iconic symbol of Ireland.

- It is usually associated with Saint Patrick. Ireland’s patron who is said to have used it to
explain the Christian Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish people.
Irish companies, like Air Lingus, can use the green shamrock as their symbol.
