Celebrating Our 225th
What is at the heart of this event for which so much
effort and planning has been
invested?
We remember with
gratitude those who planted and
nurtured Pisgah.
We remember the good
times and the fellowship enjoyed
by those who are part of this historic congregation.
But above all – we remember and give thanks to
God for His grace and faithfulness. It should make us
celebrate every Sunday.
As Fred Buechner reminds us in The Longing for
Home…“We are above all things loved – that is the
good news of the gospel – and loved not just the way we
turn up on Sundays in our best clothes and on our best
behavior and with our best feet forward, but loved as we
alone know ourselves to be, the weakest and shabbiest of
who we are along with the strongest and gladdest. To
come together as people who believe that just maybe this
gospel is actually true should be to come together like
people who have just won the Irish Sweepstakes. It
should have us throwing our arms around each other like
people who have just discovered that every single man
and woman in those pews is not just another familiar or
unfamiliar face but is our long-lost brother and our long-
lost sister because despite the fact that we have all
walked in different gardens and knelt at different graves,
we have all, humanly speaking, come from the same
place and are heading out into the same blessed mystery
that awaits us all. This is the joy that is so apt to be
missing, and missing not just from church but from our
own lives.”
May it never be missing from Pisgah Presbyterian
Church or from our lives!

Time to Celebrate!
It’s here! If you’re reading this newsletter on
Saturday, September 5th, then tomorrow and Monday are
our red letter days: Pisgah’s
225th Celebration. If the
weather holds, we should
have a record turnout. At last
count, Dottie Schmidt
reported that she has paid
reservations for close to 220
Box Lunches. And who
knows, there may be others
who are planning to come for just our Morning Worship
Service at 10:00 a.m., or our Living History Presentation
at 11:30 a.m., or our Hymn Sing at approximately 1:00
p.m.
And I’m sure a number of us will be returning on
Monday for the Open House at the Church, the
Cemetery, and the Academy Museum, from 4:00 -6:00
p.m., and the Pot Luck and Talent Show at 6:30 p.m.
How exciting! What fun!!
Just a thought: if you really want to get into the spirit
of the celebration, why don’t you and your family come
dressed in period costumes? All of us will be.
The 225th Celebration Committee has two requests:
• Bring lawn chairs with you on Sunday (We’re
concerned we may not have enough chairs for
everyone to sit during the Box Lunches and Hymn
Sing).
• Bring your camera and take lots of pictures and then
share them with us so we can compile a really
thrilling composite.
Pisgah Scholarship Awards
The 2009 Pisgah Scholarships were awarded at the
Sunday Service on July 26. Each scholarship this year
was valued at $1,069.00 and they were awarded to the
following recipients: Quin Broadbent, Emily Craycraft,
Joe Graddy, Patrick Hayes, Allison Howard, Amanda
Howard, Hannah Kindred, Martha Prewitt and Chad
Scott.
The scholarships are made possible because of the
various designated gifts to the Trustees Scholarship
Account that individuals have donated over the years.
Only the interest generated each year is used to fund
scholarships as the principle is not used. If you would
like to make a tax free contribution to the Trustee
Scholarship Fund, please make checks payable to Pisgah
Presbyterian Church with a note stating “scholarship
fund.”

Pisgah People Praying
Come and join us on the first Monday of each
month at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary for “people
praying.”
We ask you to come and help make this a time of
devotion and prayer for our church, our community and
our nation.
Only 30 minutes spent communing quietly or orally
with God and one another.

Adult Fall Sunday School Class
taught by Jeannette Priebe
“Experiencing Christ through the Eyes of Luke”
Join us as we spend time together experiencing
Christ in the writings of Luke. Being a Gentile, Luke
wrote about God’s promises to Israel having been
fulfilled in Jesus and how Jesus extended those promises
to everyone including the Gentiles. In the beginning of
the book we read of the shepherds singing “Glory to
God in the Highest” and the last chapter reminds us that
after Jesus ascended into heaven, his followers returned
to Jerusalem with great joy and were continually in the
Temple singing praises to God.
Many have said the book of Luke is the loveliest in
the New Testament. Come and see for yourself!
This study will begin on Sunday, September 13 at
9:45 a.m. in the Fireplace Room.
Children’s Sunday School
This year Pisgah’s Children’s Sunday School classes
will try something different from the past several years.
Our kindergarten through 5th grade will all meet in one
room. This will be the second year in a three year cycle
of the Rock Solid curriculum. The curriculum is Rock
Solid One Room
and through the
instruction of two
teachers, the
children will learn Bible stories through using
reproducible pages that can be applied for any age from
two to twelve. The older children can actually be teacher
helpers and learn at the same time! Don’t tell the kids
though!
Every year music has been a very vibrant part of the
children’s Sunday School with Aimee Baston as their
music leader. Under Aimee’s direction, the children have
had numerous wonderful musical presentations
throughout the Sunday School season. This year will be
no different I am sure!
Our two – four year old class will be trying a new
curriculum called Rock a Bye Toddlers & Twos. The
curriculum includes some bright, colorful posters and
games for that age and little hardback books just right
for little hands making all of the wonderful stories of
Jesus come to life for them. It comes with a CD which
includes songs such as “Praise Him, Praise Him”, “What
a Friend We Have in Jesus”, “Jesus Loves the Little
Ones” and more.
We are looking forward to an exciting and fun
learning experience in Pisgah’s Children’s Sunday School
this year. We hope your children will join us on
September 13 at 9:45 a.m. in the Academy Building!
Pisgah Patriots
Have you paid attention to the art work on the front
of your bulletin each Sunday? I would be willing to
guess that you do not know the name of the artist. He
was Jack Reilly. Jack was a commercial artist for
Kentucky Utilities and he lived with his wife Sarah (a
nurse at Dr. Ben Roach’s office) at Clifton when I first
knew him. He and Sarah later moved to Midway. As far
as I know, Jack was never a member at Pisgah, but he
created the drawing that we have used for years on our
bulletin. Note the star in the right hand lower corner of
the drawing…this is his signature. Jack had multiple
sclerosis and was confined to a wheelchair when I knew
him. The disease claimed his life about 25 years ago.
Another artist special to Pisgah is Toss
Chandler…or Lucie Cross Dunlap…or Ben’s Mother!
She created two drawings that we use for our note cards
and Christmas cards as well as the drawings for the
Pisgah Book of 1984. Toss is the daughter of Mr. Whit
and Lady Louise Dunlap and was raised on Pisgah Pike,
and grew up in Pisgah Church.
We are also blessed with Leslie James. Leslie has
contributed to our Advent Booklets and have you
checked out the mural in the nursery? You will also see
more of her work in the 225th Celebration program.
Leslie also is blessed with a beautiful singing voice and
lends it to our choir every week as well as in special
services throughout the year. And she and Bob gave us
John who joins her in the choir and for the Easter
Sunrise services in the Cemetery.
Pisgah Church is truly blessed with talented people
who are willing to share their talents.

A Note from the Administration
Committee
It is hard to believe it is September already and we
are almost into the fourth quarter of our fiscal year. I
am glad to report that our numbers from the August 15th
treasurers report look good.
We are 62.5% of the way through the year and our Happy Birthday to You in September
total income is 68.5% of our budgeted amount. This
puts us 6% ahead of budget and speaks well of our 1 Joe Lagrew, Becky Prater, Bob Washer, Chauncey
congregation as many churches are down for the year Hill
