OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS

Proper food handling practice consists of the following:


A. Regular and proper handwashing
B. Washing of fruits and vegetables before cooking/eating
C. Washing of utensils with soap and water
D. Proper storage of uncooked and cooked food
E. Regular cleaning of kitchen and dining area
F. Keeping food away from potential contaminants
GREEN if all the criteria are met most of the time.
YELLOW if 1 or more criteria are not fully met (excluding A and F)
RED if criterion A or F is not met.

A Sanitary Toilet Facility


A. Fulfills the requirements of a sanitary privy (as defined in the Code of Sanitation)
B. Is clean and well-maintained
C. Has adequate supply of water
D. Is used exclusively by the family

Proper Solid Waste Management consists of at least 3 of the following


A. Proper garbage disposal (i.e., through the garbage truck)
B. Segregation of solid waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable
C. Composting of organic or biodegradable waste
D. Segregation of non-biodegradable waste (glass, plastics, paper/cartons, cans)

Improper Solid Waste Management consists of any of the following


A. Open dumping
B. Burning
Use YELLOW if the family practices only 2 or less of the proper SWM and none of the improper

Good Housing Condition means the house has all or most of the following
A. Safe drinking water
B. Piped-in household water supply (source: ICWS))
C. Well-maintained sanitary privy and bathroom
D. Legal electrical connection (ILPI)
E. Crowding Index of at least 1 person per 4.6 sq. meter (50 sq. ft.) of living area
F. Stability in construction
G. At least 2 doors
H. Adequate ventilation (windows area should be 1/5 of floor area for urban, 1/10 for rural)
I. Proper maintenance in terms of structure and sanitation
J. No or minimal pests and vermin
(Please refer to accompanying table for the criteria for assessment)
ON Schedule Immunization means

• According to the EPI schedule (for children 0-7 yrs old)


• According to the DOH prescribed TT immunization schedule (for women 15-49 yrs old)

NORMAL NUTRITIONAL STATUS means most or all of the members of the family belong to the Normal
classification based on the following indicators using the WHO growth charts

For age 0– 6 months : Weight for Age


For age 6 months – 2 yrs : Weight for Length (WFL)
For age 2 yrs to 5 yrs: : Weight for Height (WFH)
For age 5 – 7 yrs : WFH/WFL
For age 7 – 19 yrs : BMI for age
For age 20 and up : BMI for age
and NO member is classified as RED (severely under or over nourished).
Use MUAC if no weighing scale is available.
RED if MUAC of 2-5 yrs old is below 115mm

*Additional data (for 0-5 yrs old) : Indicate status of child as to the following:
Breastfeeding Vitamin A supplementation
Deworming Dental check up

CHAPTER XVII – ‘SEWAGE COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL, EXCRETA DISPOSAL AND DRAINAGE”

SECTION 3: INDIVIDUAL EXCRETA AND SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM

3.1 Individual Excreta disposal system

3.1.1 Every new house/building to be constructed shall be provided with plan and
specifications for excreta disposal system approved by the local health authority prior to
construction. The city or municipal Building Official shall refer all applications for
Sanitary (Plumbing) Permit to the local health authority for checking of sanitary
facilities, prior to the issuance of the building permit.

3.1.2 All houses/buildings without an approved excreta disposal system shall be required to
construct such facilities under the supervision of the local health officer.

3.1.1 The privy recommended for use is the sanitary privy. It shall conform with the following
minimum requirements.

a. It shall consist of an earthen pit, a floor covering the pit, and a water-sealed bowl. It
shall be so constructed in order that fecal matter and urine be deposited into the
earthen pit which shall be completely fly-proof.
b. The pit shall be at least 1 meter square.
c. The floor should cover the pit tightly to prevent the entrance of flies. It shall be
constructed of concrete or other impervious material.
d. The water-sealed bowl shall be joined to the floor so as to form a water-tight and
insect proof joint.
e. A suitable enclosure shall be constructed to provide comfort and privacy for the
users of the privy.
f. Wooden floors and seat risers shall not be used.
