Astrology Curriculum & Study Guide

More astrology courses are found at www.astrology-videos.com and www.vedic-astrology.net than
are found elsewhere. This is both a good and bad thing. The good thing is that the astrology student
can always find some technique to study to meet the demands of what the wish to do with astrology.
The bad thing about so many courses is that it can become easy to get lost in respect to how to proceed
in one’s studies and which techniques to use to read the horoscope. In this document, I hope to give
instructions to alleviate these problems and make everyone’s studies more efficient and their astrology
practice more successful.

First and foremost, in the study of astrology is that the student must study that which they are
drawn towards. What you are drawn towards, that technique which you have an innate interest in is
likely the technique that you will, at the moment, most readily make progress with and which will give
you the answers to your own life that you are in need off. Therefore, always focus on such things –
there is no order in which courses must be studied, once the basics are learned. After getting rooted in
the basics, proceed to study courses in any order that you desire. I will now begin to describe the
different courses and their utility so that you can more wisely study.

My favorite courses are those marked with an *. I consider these the most important courses and
the ones I consider indispensable to the practicing Vedic astrologer.

BASICS
It is extremely important that you learn the basics well. Even if you think you know the basics due
to having studied for years, even decades, it is very important that you learn the basics as I teach them.
There are many, many basic things that are taught regularly by professional astrologers which are
incorrect. Such things as astronomical misunderstandings in the calculation of Planetary War and
Combustion, errors in planetary descriptions, meanings of houses, and how to use house cusps are
commonly taught with error.

To learn the basics after which you will be correctly prepared for all other courses study the
following courses:

1. Jyotish Building Blocks Course* and Graha Sutras* about the Planets.
These are the two most important courses in regards to the basics. The Jyotish Building Blocks course
can be found at astrology-videos.com/courses/beginner-courses/jyotish-building-blocks where it can
be seen on video or downloaded as an audio. The Jyotish Building Blocks course will give you the
information and understanding that will allow you to progress with the other courses without making
errors. Graha Sutras will teach you about the planets, which are the cornerstone of astrology, much
more important than the Signs of the Zodiac or the Nakshatras. Graha Sutras can be read as a book
available at vedic-astrology.net/Books/Graha-Sutras.asp, or purchased as an audio course at vedic-

I recommend the book, unless you are the type of person who learns better from listening, in which
case I recommend the course. There is nothing in the course that is not in the book and you will
often want to refer to the book and so I strongly suggest that you purchase a copy.
In addition to the material in the Graha Sutras book and course, I have pulled selected videos
from other course that give very important information about the planets at astrology-

what is most important about the planets when it comes to predictive astrology.
Jyotish Building Blocks, Graha Sutras and the additional videos on the planets can be studied in any
order or even side by side. As you learn from these courses, take it easy and relax and just let things
soak in as they want to and don’t stress about things that you don’t retain. You will be exposed to the
material in these two courses very often in other courses and it will all sink in deeper and deeper the
more years that you continue to study astrology.
After studying these two sources you are ready to jump into any other courses you desire. Keep
reading to learn what is available, what the techniques learned in different courses are for, and which
courses I consider the most important.

2. Rasi Sutras and Nakshatras.

In continuation of the basics the Rasi Sutras course and the Nakshatras, the Galactic Zodiac course
will finish off your study of the big three of the Planets, Signs of the Zodiac, and the Nakshatras
(Lunar Mansions). It is not necessary to take these two courses before proceeding to the other courses.
Anything in these courses that is required in other courses will be taught in those courses. The Rasi
Sutras course, does, however, give the information about the Rasis that is required to detail a reading,
such as sizes, colors and places – so if you want to add that extra level of detail that most astrologers
ignore then this is a must study course. The Nakshatras course will give you an understanding of just
what Nakshatras are doing and prevent you from being confused by this very mystical part of
astrology. There are also some techniques taught in this course that will allow you to make some sense
of a person and their lives even if the birth time is not accurate. Most importantly, you will learn the
ways in which the Nakshatras are responsible for growing and manifesting the things in our lives.

BEGINNER COURSES
Beginner courses are beginner courses not because they don’t have valuable techniques, but
because they have simple techniques that are easy to learn and which have less confusing details. Many
of the most important techniques I regularly use are found in these courses – there are many very
powerful techniques in these courses.

1. Ages of the Planets*

This is one of my favorite courses as in it I teach the maturation ages of the planets as well as the
natural planetary periods of life. So often I find that a person’s troubles can be resolved simply by
knowing of any maturation periods or the period of life that the person is in. By period I do not mean
Dasa period, but something else simply based on the biological and psychological changes of the

2. Parivartana Yogas and Final Dispositors*

Parivartana refers to interchanges which require quite specific analysis in order to determine the
interchange as favorable or unfavorable. In this course, I teach a simple snapshot method to determine
some important themes in the person’s life which explain why their life is better or worse than you
would originally suspect based on other examinations alone. This course can be purchased as an audio

3. Interpreting Avasthas*
Avasthas are my favorite part of Parashara Astrology and what I consider to be the foundation of
that system. This is a very simple course that gets you started with these powerful tools. Avasthas
reveal how a person will experience their lives and how they are either finding fulfillment or living life
in a way that can only result in emptiness. Avasthas are also heavily used in predictive astrology. The
material in this course will give you great insights into human behavior and the behavior of your client
and teach you principles that you will later use in predictive astrology. This course can be purchased

4. Mastering Debilitation*
Debilitation is a simple, yet often misunderstood concept as a debilitated planet not only paves
the way to difficulties, but also perhaps to success. There are thus many important principles to know
when analyzing a debilitated planet and they are all taught in this course. This course can be purchased

5. Mastering Rahu & Ketu*

You can never know too much about Rahu and Ketu as their troubles are often the reason people
come to an astrologer. This course starts at the basics of Rahu and Ketu and takes them up to advanced
analysis including their use with Vimshottari Dasa and in compatibility. This course can be purchased

6. Positional Transits*
This is one of my all-time favorite courses. In this course, I teach the effects of all the planets
transiting through their important positions in the horoscope. I also teach about returns for all the
planets and what the effects of those returns are. There is so much simple information in this course
that is so powerful that I often get away answering a client’s concern simply with the information
found in this course without even having to resort to Dasas. This course can be purchased as an audio

7. Yogas of Character*
Another of my all-time favorite courses. The information in this course is very important and
contains some of the most neglected principles in Vedic astrology. The course is all about the planetary
permutations that create the very foundation of the person. The foundation which is important to all
a person’s behaviors and which, if good, gives them a strength that can be counted. The most
important part of this course is the Nabhasa Akriti Yogas, which I rarely ever talk to my clients about
but which I want to know about them so that I know what strength within themselves they are
standing on. I especially like to use these Yogas when someone asks about a possible partner. This is
an old course that I taught with the Sidereal Zodiac as it was before 2006 when I changed to the
Tropical Zodiac. So just learn the techniques as I teach them with the sidereal but practice them with

8. Snap Shooting Vimshottari I: BPHS

In this course, I teach the basics of reading Vimshottari Dasa as per the guidelines set forth in the
second volume of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. This is the most basic use of Vimshottari Dasa – a
very classical method. It’s not my favorite method, but there are a lot of valuable and simple tidbits in
that volume of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra which are good to know about that sometimes make

9. Outer Planets in Vedic Astrology

In this course, I teach some basics on using the outer planets: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, to
determine the inner growth and inner challenges that are upon a person. I use these principles all the
time, particularly for myself and my loved ones so that I can understand the growth that we are going
through. I especially like to look towards future transits to see what shocking lessons are on my

10. Character Effects of the Grahas and Bach Flower Remedies

In the first course, Character Effects of the Grahas, I teach how to judge the psychological influences
of Saturn, Rahu and Ketu as well as the effects of every planet in every sign. In the second course, I
teach how to use Bach Flower Remedies to alleviate the stresses of Saturn and Rahu. These are very old
courses from around 2003 during which I was still using the Sidereal Zodiac, so just learn it that way,
but practice it with the Tropical Zodiac to get even better results. The Character Effects of the Grahas

INTERMEDIATE COURSES
Intermediate courses use more complex techniques such as those necessary for predicting future
events and looking deeper into the core of the person.

1. Lajjitaadi Avasthas – The Heart of Parashara*

I consider this my most important course to date. In it I introduce the most important component
of Parashara’s predictive astrology while teaching in depth behavioral techniques. This is the astrology
course that can potentially change your life and the life of your clients more than learning any other
technique of astrology and which is the center of many courses to come. This course is available on

2. Parashara’s Formula for Yoga Judgement*

In this course, I teach how to use Dasa dependent Yogas. The most important part of this course
are the Kona-Kendra Raja Yogas (formed by angle and trine lords) and the rules of determining
auspicious and inauspicious house lords and exactly how to use them. This is a very common yet
totally misunderstood subject in Vedic Astrology that every astrologer needs to clearly understand.

3. Shad Bala – 7 Facets of the Planets*

This is one of my favorite courses. In this course, I show how the mathematical genius of
Parashara is to be used to analyze 49 behaviors of every individual. Some astrologers I have taught
this to, offer their clients a 90-minute Shad Bala reading to help their client really understand their 49

This is an old course from before I started using Tropical Rasis in 2006, so it is done with Sidereal
Rasis, so just learn it as taught but use it with your Tropical settings and it will work even better.

4. Tajika Aspects & Parashara’s Mutual Coworkers

This course teaches how psychological stresses can serve as motivation to succeed in life. I highly
recommend this course to those with western astrology backgrounds or to anyone who wants to learn

ADVANCED COURSES
Advanced courses take great skill but allow the astrologer to make exact predictions to the day
and to go to a deeper level of detail in their interpretations.

1. Predicting with Transits*

In this course, I teach how to predict an event to the exact day using transits. Transits are the most
reliable method with which with to do this. The basic principle is taken from Phaladeepika but
expanded greatly to make the technique very accurate with the help of Varga charts. This course is

2. Rectification*
An accurate rectification is the most difficult feat for the astrologer to perform. I come across
many people who have had their charts rectified by astrologers and only one such rectification was
highly correct. The others were loosely correct and in most cases, much worse than the birth time that
the individual first gave the astrologer. It’s a hard task to rectify a chart and the only way to do it
accurately to a narrow time frame is with the help of transits as taught in this course. This course is

3. Vargas in Depth*
In this course I teach how to use the all mysterious Varga deities and symbols. This is a fun and
very colorful course for those who want to take Varga analysis down to the deepest level of detail
possible. This is a very neglected aspect of symbolic Astrology and so there is much to discover in

JAIMINI COURSES
Jaimini is the king when it comes to concretely reading the horoscope. By this I mean making
concrete predictions about the future as well as making concrete determinations about the person and
about what they will or won’t have in their lives and when these things will come into their lives and
when these things will leave their lives. For all such concrete things, the Jaimini system is the preferred
method. HOWEVER, individuals who are not sufficiently developed psychologically will not be able
to hear these concrete realities as they are often harsh realities. I therefore suggest that everyone learns
Parashara’s Lajjitaadi Avasthas in order to develop the psychological understanding necessary to guide
other people as well as to gain the maturity of knowing about one’s own future. The Parashara system
of astrology is the perfect companion to Jaimini, with one system, the Jaimini, focusing on the concrete
realities, while the other system focus on the inner reality and how that reality manifests the life of the
person.

1. Jaimini Sutras Chapter 1*

The first chapter of Jaimini’s Upadesa Sutras consists of four parts in which Jaimini teaches how to
determine who the individual is. What they will be, what their career will be, their wealth, their success,
and the family they will have. I teach this in 3 audio courses which can be purchased as three audio

 A book is also available which covers the Sutras of the first chapter of Jaimini’s Upadesa Sutras at

literal translation of Upadesa Sutras with only the directions on how to figure Jaimini out, but not the
details. The details are left for you to figure out as was the will of Jaimini. If you want the easy version,

2. Jaimini Event Predictive Courses: Concrete Chart and Varga Analysis with Jaimini*,
Predicting with Rasi Dasas*; and Concrete Predictions with Vimshottari Dasa.
These courses are taken from directions given in the second chapter of Jaimini Sutras. The first
course, Concrete Chart and Varga Analysis with Jaimini, is a simple yet very effective course on analyzing
all the Vargas in order to determine the concrete realities that the individual will experience in every
area of their lives such as wealth, marriage, children, etc. I particularly expand on wealth in this course
bringing in many foundation Yogas that impact wealth. This course is available on video at

The second course, Predicting with Rasi Dasas, shows how to use the twelve event predictive Dasas
of Jaimini that are given in the 4th part of the second chapter of Upadesa Sutras. This course is all about
event timing and people who have taken this course have preferred the Rasi Dasa methods over using
Vimshottari Dasa when it comes to predicting concrete events. This course is available on video at

The third course, Concrete Predictions with Vimshottari Dasa shows how to use Jaimini principles along
with Vimshottari Dasa to predict events. Vimshottari Dasa is a Dasa mentioned by Jaimini and it
works very well when combined with Rasi aspects as shown in this course. This course is available on

TAJIKA COURSES
Tajika is a system of astrology that came into India from Persia. Its Ancient Persian astrology
preserved in India, and better preserved than it was by the Greeks or other western cultures. Tajika
offers wonderfully accurate predictive methods. I always say that if you want to learn to make
astrological predictions with the least amount of work and study, learn Tajika.

Varshaphala I & Varshaphala II

Varshaphala is a method of making predictions for each year using Solar Return charts. What is
wonderful about the Tajika method of solar returns is that events can be predicted to a very exact time
during the year, even to the exact day. While is relatively easy to predict what will happen during the
year, it’s very difficult to predict the exact day, but it is possible and experience makes it more possible.
The first course, Varshaphala I is the initiation into Varshaphala and covers most of the Tajika
principles. The Varshaphala II course adds some more advanced techniques. These courses can be

Tajika Prashna*
Prashna is the astrological art of answering a question based on the moment the question was
asked. Tajika astrology is wonderful for this and the method used by a large portion of astrologers in
India. This course is very involved and contains techniques for answering many, many important

SPECIALIZATION COURSES
Specialization Courses are courses that focus on a particular subject matter.

1. Vedic Relationship Compatibility*

Not only does this course show the Indian method of astrological compatibility, I also show how
to pre-examine the chart of the male and female involved in the relationship and so you will learn
many character and psychological techniques in this course. I consider this a must take course and it’s
still one of my favorites even though it’s one of my earliest courses. This is a relatively easy course

2. Classical Muhurta
Muhurta is the astrological science of finding an auspicious moment to begin some event such as
marriage or opening a business. This is an advanced system of astrology that requires learning dozens

3. Gems Jyotish & Minerals

In this course, I teach an involved and precise method of selecting gemstones to alleviate difficult
planets in the horoscope. This course takes you down the road of mineralogical and astrological

5. Longevity
In this course, I teach how to predict the end of life using short, medium and long life Yogas in

predicting longevity requires great astrological skill and perhaps greater psychological refinement. This

CERTIFICATIONS IN ASTROLOGY
Astrologers are not required by any legal or government agency to be certified or licensed.
However, there are many astrologers and astrology agencies that certify astrologers. What does this
really mean? What it should mean is what it meant in ancient days when the student was only allowed
to handle a horoscope on his own when he could handle it as competently as his teacher. That was
the yardstick of achievement, not jumping through a few hoops of written and oral tests that anyone
can jump through given enough time and attempts. Upon having the approval of his teacher, the
student was respected as a master. As a student of his master teacher, the public would respect him
for his pedigree and for the stamp of approval given by his teacher. The stamp of approval was
primarily the act of the act of the teacher sending him forth to read horoscopes, and in some Asian
cultures this was celebrated by the teacher giving the student a scroll which recorded that which he
had mastered. The student could then go on to teach others and upon their students becoming as
competent as their teacher they would be considered as competent as their teachers, teacher. So, for
those who wish for certification, that question the student should ask of the certify agency or certifying
astrologer is, “Once I have this certification, will I be as competent as you in this practice and would
you feel as confident in me reading someone’s horoscope as you would be reading it yourself? And,
can I now certify other people as I am certified so that should mean something” Trust me, most
astrologers who certify people would not feel very competent in their certified student’s ability. Why
not? Because most people are just not into astrology enough to become that competent and the
certification agencies in existence are processing these people in batches instead of individually as it
should be done. And none of them would allow their certified students to certify others. The
certification does not show any competence that can be trusted. So, what is the point of being certified
in this way? It’s a great income stream and the idea of a certificate keeps students at their studies and
so maintains the income stream and the student’s studies. The only benefit is that it keeps the student
focused in their studies, but that only benefits the weekend astrologer as great astrologers are focused
on their studies because its most of who they are. These are the only types of astrologers who should
be certified.

SCROLLS
I would like to bring back the ancient tradition of scrolls and student mastery. I have been working
towards this end for many years, creating many courses in order to provide enough material to study.
I have taught a lot of courses and I will teach many more courses. But, it’s not necessary for the
student to be competent in all these techniques in order to become a great astrologer who can help
others and who is capable of successfully teaching others something useful. I have therefor created
different Study Focuses consisting of courses that deal with the same subject matter or area of
expertise. Scrolls will be available for each of these Study Focuses. Scrolls mean that I think the person
is as competent as I am in those particular techniques and that they are also equally capable of teaching
others and that they themselves can gift scrolls to their students who have demonstrated mastery.
To gain a scroll requires independent study of the courses and demonstration of sound knowledge
in the courses. This knowledge can be demonstrated on the studyingkala@yahoogroups.com study
list, which is the study group for my courses, and at Satsanga get togethers that will be held in the
future. I am always keeping an eye out for bright students of appropriate character who have a divine
relationship with astrology and when they have demonstrated a zeal for astrology and progress in their
education they will be invited to take the final steps to become scrolled.
Scrolled means “as competent” as myself in specific methods of astrology. This does not mean
the “same as myself.” Every astrologer is gifted in different ways and so every astrologer will handle a
group of techniques somewhat differently – the proof of competence will be in the results. Students
must prove mastery of all technical knowledge, though how they exactly use this technical knowledge
will often be different than I may use it, but it will be used as competently.

have a scroll or who are not living for astrology enough to earn a scroll, these study tracks are good

Snapshot techniques are simple techniques that require just a glance at a horoscope. These are the
most basic of techniques but quite helpful and suitable to new students of astrology. Experience helps

Though I have been studying astrology for 25 years and teaching astrology for 20 years (as of
2017) I still have many courses that need teaching – astrology is a never-ending study for both student
and teacher. Don’t think you need to learn everything, learn what is most exciting to you and use that.
I have been practicing astrology successfully after 2 years of Western Astrology study and 8 months
of Vedic Astrology study, thus at a time when I had only a small fraction of the knowledge that
completing even one of these study tracks will provide. In astrology you do not need to know it all,
you just have to use very well what you do know – that is what makes a good astrologer when it comes
to giving readings.
