PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development
Christian Conscience Penance Wondering at Conscience
Year 3

Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
The ‘Christian conscience’, Year 3 unit is all about preparing children for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance, focusing on wondering at
conscience as the aspect of human development and the salvation topic Penance. The unit begins with wondering at the human experience of
conscience (A). Through this stage, students are provided with opportunities to wonder about God and that wonder is a gift God created in
people so that they could discover God through everything God has created and this assists in the development of their religious awareness.
Students will learn about the gift called ‘conscience’ that is given by God. This gift guides them and this is why we like to do what is loving and
good. In this aspect, the teacher will emphasise that in conscience, God is calling each human being personally. Students will learn that moral
conscience is doing what is right. This unit then explores ways in which Jesus showed how to follow conscience through his own thoughts and
feelings, we will explore this through scripture (B). Students will learn of the modelling of Jesus when he showed how to follow conscience and
how Jesus helps his followers through Reconciliation to hear conscience. Part B is all about providing students with examples of Jesus being the
perfect model and example of truly human behaviour as Jesus followed his conscience through his thoughts and feelings and we can to.
Students will learn about forgiveness and the importance of penance for when we do the wrong thing. Finally students finish off the unit,
exploring ways in which Christians are called to examine their consciences and reflect on what they have learnt(C).

Learner Diversity:
 Group work to help guide weaker students.
 Think, pair, share and wait time when asking questions to allow students to think.
 Students with lack of fine motor skills can use ipads or pen.
 Appeals to multiple intelligences – activities include writing, talking, concrete (hands-on), making videos, drama, puppets, music, videos
etc.
 Students with vision impairment will be strategically placed at the front to see the whiteboard.
 Lower level students will have explicit instructions; teacher and EA can work with a focus group. Also teacher will follow gradual release of
responsibility model to scaffold and guide lessons.

Greeting: Priest: In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy
Spirit be with you all.
People: And with your spirit.
Opening Prayer: Individual: Let us pray.

Lord our God,

We ask that you bless and guide us
As we celebrate the new hope you offer
Through the Sacrament of Penance.
Accept our desire to make amends.
We acknowledge our sins
And are resolved to change our lives.
Help us to celebrate this sacrament of your mercy
So that we may reform our lives
And receive from you the gift of everlasting joy.

We are this through Christ our Lord.

ALL: Amen.
Celebrations of the Word of God: A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians [2 Corinthians 5:17-21].

Brothers and sisters:

Whoever is in Christ is a new creation:
The old things have passed away;
Behold, new things have come.
And all this is from God.
Who has reconcilied us to himself through Christ
And given to us the ministry of reconciliation,
Namely, God was reconciling the world to himself
In Christ,
Not counting their trespasses against them
And entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
So we are ambassadors for Christ,
As if God were appealing through us
We implore you on behalf of Christ,
Be reconciled to God.
For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin,
So that he might become the righteousness of God in him.

This is the Word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm: [Psalm 36: 1-10 – adapted].

Response: “Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens”.

Gospel: Priest: The Lord be with you.
[Matthew: 21:28-32]. ALL: And with your spirit.

Priest: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Peter approached Jesus and asked him,
“Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him?
As many as seven times?”

Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy seven times”.
That is why the Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king.
Who decided to settle accounts with his servants.
When he began the accounting,
A debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount.

Since he had no way of paying it back,

His master ordered him to be sold,
Along with his wife, his children, and all his property,
In payment of the debt.
At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full’.

Moved with compassion the master of that servant

Let him go and forgave him the loan.
When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants
Who owed him a much smaller amount.

He seized him and started to choke him, demanding,

‘Pay back what you owe’.
Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him,
‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back’.
But he refused
Instead, he had him put in prison
Until he paid back the debt.

Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened,

They were deeply disturbed, and went to their master
And reported the whole affair.
His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant!
I forgave your entire debt because you begged me to.
Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant,
As I had pity on you?’

Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers

Until he should pay back the entire debt.
So will my heavenly Father do to you,
Unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”

Priest: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

ALL: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Homily: Priest:
Examination of Conscience: After the homily, a suitable period of silence should follow allowing time for an examination of
conscience. The priest may provide a simple format for this, inviting those present to reflect on:
 The good you have done.
 The wrong you have done.
o At home
o At school
o With my friends.
Invite those present to reflect on things they would like to say sorry to God for and ask God’s
forgiveness.
During the examination of conscience reflective music will play – Peace of God Children’s Melodies -
