What is the difference between these two types of memories and which one is used with
PIII and PIV?
Can we use SDRam in spite of DDR Ram and DDR Ram in spite of SDRam? If your
answer is in Yes or No. Justify it."

1. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SD AND DDR

RAM:
SD RAM is stands for Synchronous Dynamic Random
Access memory but after the invention of DDR RAM it is change
for clarity and for easy to understand it’s known as single data
rate.
DDR RAM is stand for double data rate. It is clear from
there names that DDR have double speed than SDR for more
detail read following.
Physical Difference
S.NO Points SD RAM DDR RAM
1. Notches Usually with two Here in DDR Ram there
notches, one close to is only one notch placed
the center and one in middle of ram. They
further to the side. The have an equal distance
shape of SD is like this from the notch to either
||||||||||-||||-||||||||||||| end. shape is
||||||||||||||-||||||||||||||

2. Pins SD Ram has 166pins in DDR has 184 pins

Number number.
3. Cost SD RAM has less cost and DDR is expensive than SD
more economic. RAM.

Internal Difference
1. Speed SD RAM has speed Up Simply DDR RAM is
to 133mhz (100mhz is Double Data Rate RAM.
also common) This is RAM which
handles data at twice
the speed of the old SDR
(Synchronous Dynamic
RAM.) DDR RAM typical
operates at speeds of
266MHz, 333MHz, and
400MHz

2. Speed The SD Ram's Where as DDR’s

Limit Maximum Speed is Minimum Frequency is
133mhz. 266Mhz hence the
frequency is much
better than SD the DDR
is better and faster.
3. Data In SD Ram Data refresh However Data refresh
Refresh rate rate in DDR ram is
Rate Is slow. double than SD Ram.

4. Synchrono SD RAMS Transfer data DDR Transfer data on

us System on both the edges of the
the rising edge of the clock signal that is on
clock the rising and fall twice
Signal. the clock signal.
5. Data SD dose not support DDR Memory supports
Correction error Correction. error correction code
and non-parity.

6. Read Write SD ram do only one job Whether DDR do both

Ability at a time either read or read and Write at a time
Write. this is another reason of
fast speed.

The main difference between SDR and DDR memory the doubled speed:
DDR can transfer data at roughly twice the speed of SDRAM. For example, PC133
SDRAM runs at 133 MHz, while 133 MHz DDR effectively runs at 133 MHz x 2 =
266 MHz.

Use Of RAM’s:
SD RAM commonly use with Pentium III and DDR RAM are
use with Pentium IV. In some cases DDR proper Run with
Pentium III when the motherboard of PC support DDR Ram and
have a DDR Ram, Personally I seen a motherboard of Pentium
III which support both DDR and SD have two slots of DDR and
two Slots of SD. But this is another case because may be that
motherboard have fast clock speed or buss speed therefore it
support both of RAM’s.

2. Can we use SDRAM in spite of DDR Ram and

DDR Ram in spite of SDRAM?
My answer is yes we can use it but the condition is if
Mother board of PC support it or require it. If our PIII
motherboard have only slot of SD RAM and we want to run DDR
it is not Possible and Vise versa.
 WHY MY ANSWER IS YES??
Because DDR Ram is develop shape of SD Ram. They both
do the same jobs with a different speed due to technology.
 Here Question arise why we don’t use DDR ram with Pentium
III commonly And vise versa?
And answer is because Pentium III don’t need the DDR
ram SD RAM Fulfill the requirements. But in Pentium IV we
need more speed which SD RAM can’t provide us. So here we
need DDR Ram.
 Where we don’t need DDR?
If our PC board is PIII and (Consider mostly it isn’t) it have DDR
slot and board processor is 500 MHz and bus speed is 16 bit and here
the 133 MHz of SD ram meet the requirement of board and we fix the
DDR of 266 MHz and say the speed will increase it isn’t because the
board speed is slow. Same with PIV if the speed of board is high and
we fix SD ram of 133 MHz PC cant give us full speed which mother
board support Here for utilizing full speed we need DDR RAM.

Here we can easily conclude with above mention Question

that yes we can use both rams with PIII and PV but due to requirement
and needy matter we don’t. If we use DDR with Pentium III and
motherboard don’t need it then it is just waste of Money therefore we
don’t use but we can use it.
