Outline for the Video Presentation

Introduction:

“The oceans and seas cover 71% of our planet. They generate oxygen and
impact our climate. The seas are our primary source of protein for a
billion people and are integral to the different economies all over
the world.”

“However, our seas are on the verge of irreversible collapse brought

about by unwarranted exploitation of our seas and our non-sustainable
consumption of the marine resources. We are confronted with pressing
concerns affecting our seas and endangering our marine biological
diversity.”

a. Sea Pollution
- 80% of the pollution to the marine environment comes from the
land

- Oil Spills are the grim reapers of fishes, turtles and other
endangered and threatened wildlife

“Marine biological diversity is also at risk.”

b. Threatened and Endangered Marine Species

- Populations of many species are decreasing at an unsustainable
rate and the list of endangered marine species are on the rise
- Japan continues its whale hunt despite ICJ ruling against the
same

- In the Philippines, Hammerhead and Thresher sharks are killed
and sold for their meat and fins

- Due to our unsustainable fishing practices and the continuing
degradation of our seas, we are killing marine life, damaging habitats
and ecosystems

“Various laws and international conventions have been passed for the
protection and conservation of our marine resources and ecosystems.”

In the Philippines, we have various laws aimed at protecting our seas:

a. Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (RA 9147)
b. Philippine Fisheries Code (RA 8550)
c. Marine Pollution Decree of 1976 (PD 979)

International conventions have also been passed for the protection of

our marine ecosystems:
a. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild
Fauna and Flora (CITES)
b. London Convention on Ocean Dumping
c. International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling
d. UNFCC
e. Stockholm and Rio Declarations
f. Kyoto Protocol

Climate change has 2 tangible effects on our seas:

a. Rising Sea Levels from the melting of the ice sheets and glaciers

b. Warming of the oceans

What can we do?

1. Mind Your Carbon Footprint and Reduce Energy Consumption
2. Make Safe, Sustainable Seafood Choices
3. Support Organizations Working to Protect our Seas and Marine
Wildlife
4. Influence Change in the Community

“One person can make a difference. Save our Seas. Save our Planet.
Take interest, get involved, for our children and theirs.”
