MASTER STUDY ​ART CRITIQUE


Directions:  Using  the  your  chosen  work  of  art  from  a  specific  art  movement, answer the 
following questions and critique this work.

The Dragon's Gift, ​Archival pigments on acid-free handmade Japanese paper​, ​12x17 inches. 
 
Describe:  
Describe the artwork that you have chosen.Think as if you had to tell someone what this artwork is and 
they cannot see it. ​The top-left cartouche contains the symbols 龍毬, literally meaning 'dragon' and
'orb'.​The bottom-right cartouche features the kanji 不憩奮励, meaning 'Never resting, striving higher'.
 
What made you choose this artwork and or art movement? 
The reason I chose this art pieces was because I like how they remade one of my favorite characters but 
keep it as a certain style 
Analyze:  
Looking at your artwork, consider the elements that the artist has used to create and or enhance the 
aesthetics of the work. Summarize their use in the art below: ​the element that I see in the artwork is the 
way he gave it the shapes and the different shades 
 
Line: ​The artist seems to keep his line more straight the rounded 
 
Are any of the elements dominant or stronger than compared to the others? ​They seem stronger than 
the others. 
 
What are some of the principles of design being utilized to pull together and organize the elements in 
this composition? ​By hw the artist set the mood of the drawing/ painting by having dark clouds and a 
dragon around the boy. 
 
Is the overall composition balance? If so, how is this balance achieved? If not, what does the 
unbalanced nature of the composition add to the work? ​Its is balanced by how the types of colors he 
used. 
 
Is there a focal point in your opinion for this work? If so, how is the artist making this part of the 
composition stand out? ​No there is no focal point  
 
Interpret: 
Looking at your artwork, and understanding what art movement this work was created during, interpret 
the story/purpose of this work. Explore your own opinions on how the artist helped tell this story through 
art techniques and use of elements and principles.  
 
 
Judging: 
Remember what you learned about critique of artworks. The viewer needs to ask themselves if the artist 
was successful in the differing aesthetic views. For each of these views discuss if in your opinion the 
artist was successful or not, and support your answers with why or how the artist was or was not
