PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development
3 Christian Conscience Penance Wondering at our conscience

Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
This unit begins with wondering at the human conscience. We allow children to sense that God is calling them personally through their
conscience to love and do good, and in turn they identify that God loves each of them. We acknowledge the importance of our conscience and
our need to hear God’s guiding voice through life’s challenges. Through Jesus’s own thoughts and feelings we can help draw children closer to
God as Jesus did with his followers. People who sin by failing to obey God’s Laws can still be drawn close to God in Reconciliation. Jesus gave
people the Sacrament of Penance for people to confess their sins. This unit and sacrament allows children to discover their conscience to
examine the ways they have sinned and will continue to encourage children to wonder at the gift of conscience through which God is calling them
personally to love and do good.

Compiled by Teila Correia

Song: ‘Open My Eyes’ by Jesse Manibusan

Greeting:
Grace and peace be with you from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ who laid down his life for our sins.

All: And also with your spirit.

Liturgy of the Word

2 Corinthians 5:17-19
Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come. All this is done by God, who through Christ changed us from enemies into
his friends and gave us the task of making others his friends also. Our message is that God was making all human beings his friends through Christ. God did not
keep an account of their sins, and he has given us the message which tells how he makes them his friends.
The word of the Lord

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34 – adapted

Response:
Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord

Lord you bless everyone who obeys your law and who follow your commands with all their hearts.
Response: Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord
You have told us to obey your teachings always.
Response: Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord
Treat us with kindness, Lord, so that we may live and do what you say.
Open our minds and let us discover the wonders of your law.
Response: Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord
Point out your rules to us, and we won’t disobey even one of them.
Help us to understand your law;
We promise to obey it with all our hearts.
Response: Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, alleluia!
“This son of mine was dead but now he is alive.”
Alleluia

Gospel: Luke 15:17-42

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke.

Jesus said, “At last the younger son came to his senses and said, ‘All my father’s hired workers have more than they can eat, and here I am about to starve! I
will get up and go to my father and say, Father, I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son; treat me as one of your
hired workers.’ So he got up and started back to his father.
“He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him. ‘Father,’
the son said, ‘I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.’ But the father called his servants, ‘Hurry!’ he said. ‘Bring the
best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast! For this son
of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.’ And so the feasting began.”
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily
Concentrate on the Gospel here.
We become God’s friends even more – we can love a lot because we have been forgiven a lot.
Reflect on things you would like to say sorry to God for and ask God’s forgiveness.

Rite of Reconciliation
God our Father,
We ask your forgiveness for the times we have not lived as Jesus taught.
We are sorry for the times we have turned away from your love and the love of others.
Welcome us back and give us your peace and healing.
We ask this through Jesus your Son.
All: Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Individual Confession
Concluding Rite
Let us pray.
God and Father of us all, you have forgiven our sins and sent us your peace. Help us to forgive each other and serve you with our hearts. We ask this through
Christ our Lord.
All: Amen

Dismissal
Go in peace with the assurance that God loves us all.
All: Thanks be to God
