Camp Notes and Website Analysis:

1. Grammy Camp (Los Angeles, CA) - https://goo.gl/3u1Gqy
a. Five day high school music program, students may pick a specific career track to study,
does not provide housing for non-residential students, tuition is $1,500 for each five day
camp, learning activities include: forum discussions, workshops, clinics, panels, and
master classes with top industry professionals, individual and small group instruction,
interactivity between various career tracks, media, performance and recording projects,
music business best practices (how to make a living in the music business).
b. Strength: Their website is very easy to navigate through which can bring you to several
different pages full of photos, videos, interviews, and their equipment. (Lots of
information)
c. Weakness: Their website looks very boring and does not do a good job at pulling
students in to look at their website. Doesn’t seem like it would pull a teenager in to look
at the website for themselves.
2. Berklee Global Jazz Institute Workshop at the Newport Jazz Festival - https://goo.gl/HTt9QF
a. Five day camp for students 15+, allows students to learn about the theory of jazz music,
play with professionals, and learn about their instruments, the students play at the
festival at the end of the camp, registration fee is $50 and the tuition and housing is paid
by a scholarship, students must apply to the camp in order to be considered for the
scholarship, participants are housed on the Salve Regina University campus.
b. Strength: Display the camp news really well which helps keep the viewers informed
about the latest events and other things going on within the camp.
c. Weakness: Doesn’t display a lot of interesting photos or videos from the camp on their
website. This makes it a little less engaging for younger people but would probably be
more beneficial for parents.
3. Jazz Camp West (La Honda, CA) - https://goo.gl/UwW6Gr
a. Eight day camp for students 15+, gives students the chance to create their own personal
schedule for each day, students are given the chance to take instrumental, vocal and
dance classes, students can have any skill level to attend the camp, paying the full
tuition fee of $1,500 or paying the deposit of $800 includes lodging and daily meals,
camp offers financial aid and scholarships to students who can’t pay the full amount.
b. Strength: Goes into a great amount of detail about what students will be learning an
what some of their opportunities are. This could potentially bring more attention to their
website if the kid can see what they will be learning.
c. Weakness: The website is kind of difficult to navigate through and familiarize yourself
with. This makes it hard for people to keep their interest in the camp when they’re
struggling trying to find something.
4. Bard Summer Jazz Academy (New York, NY) - https://goo.gl/gkHt3G
a. Two week residential program for high school students, participants need to audition in
order to be accepted into the camp, tuition is free but room fees cost around $1,190,
students participate in one of two big bands multiple performing small combos, receive
private lessons, and experience classes in aesthetics, culture, history, performance
practice, and pedagogy, also features other public performances featuring students and
professionals, graded very strictly and is only meant for advanced students who are
highly engaged in the camp.
b. Strength: Their website is very straight forward that is really easy to explore. This does
make it nice because of its simplicity but it also makes it slightly boring and not very
interactive.
c. Weakness: Has no videos, pictures, or anything showing what the camp looks like or
what a students average day is like. I found this to not be very beneficial for people
looking into the camp because it gives them no insight as to what they will be doing.
5. Music Institute of Chicago (Winnetka, IL) - https://goo.gl/vDSZE1
a. Five day camp for all ages, split into three different sections which divide the age groups,
first and second sessions are for grades 7 - 9 and the third session is for high school -
adult students, the whole program costs $320 and students must have two years of jazz

over the phone to be accepted, students will also play a final concert for the public in one
of their halls, at this camp students learn to improve their ensemble, improvisational and
sight-reading skills through working with professional jazz musicians.
b. Strength: Website is very understandable and gives good information about the camp
without getting too complex. The overall format isn’t too distracting or hard to
understand.
c. Weakness: Has no videos, pictures, or anything showing what the camp looks like or
what a students average day is like. I found this to not be very beneficial for people
looking into the camp because it gives them no insight as to what they will be doing.

groups, students present final pieces at the end of the camp to an audience, camp is
more intended to be fun and educational opposed to being rigorous, students age
groups are split up along with the instrument they are playing.
b. Strength: Has a really good video that shows what the camp looks like for the kids
attending. It also has interviews from each of the instructors on what their goals are or
what they want to teach.

Feedback From Students and Teachers:

1. Josh Dearien - (j.dearien20@animashighschool.com) - Applying to music camps
a. How much you progress as a musician throughout the camp, the camp should advertise
what students will take away from it, advertise what the setting will look like during the
camp (facilities, town, activities), facilities and setting play a huge roll in the interest of
students, advertise how much the camp will cost especially if it’s a small fee compared to
Berklee, advertise the housing options, advertise the camp on sites like this
https://getacceptd.com/, mixing age groups does not bother older kids but it does matter
to students who are in middle school, advertise the camp through videos and photos that
would be displayed on the website.

2. Rex Stowers - (trxstower@gmail.com) - Attended one of the Berklee camps

a. Wanted to gain as many new skills as possible at the camp, liked how the camp was led
like college courses where the classes were about self improvement with the help from
the teachers, found out about the camp through advertisements on music websites like
Ultimate Guitar Tabs, really liked the independent aspect where he attended his classes
and then had time to do jam sessions, open mics, and other concerts around town, liked
how the camp was in downtown Boston but thinks that if the Telluride program was set
up in a similar way more kids from the area would find it easier and more affordable to
go to, thought that the camp was worth the price he paid to go to it because he learned
so many new skills from it, students lived in the dorms of the school with a person that
matched their skill level and instrument (felt more comfortable that way), had to complete
a mini audition so that they could be placed in the correct learning group and person to
live with.

3. Kai Henriksen - (k.henriksen18@animashighschool.com) - Attended two blues camps

a. Was excited to have the chance to play blues all day and hopefully improve in his ability
to play with a group and learn some new skills, liked that he was able to play with local
professional blues musicians, liked that he was able to see a lot of pro gear that the
instructors brought, enjoyed playing with the his group the first year but the second year
of the camp had a lot more younger kids who weren't as serious or committed to actually
learning and practicing which made it less enjoyable, liked having the chance to play
with some of the pro gear the professionals had, thought it was cool to learn from
musicians that had different skills within the music, heard about the camp through music
instructor, thought that being able to play music all day with a bunch of different people
would be fun and interesting, camp was local so housing and location wasn’t an issue,
did not remember the price of the camp, his first year experience was great because he
was able to play with kids who were his age and older which meant that they were all
dedicated to being there and were actually interested in learning something, his second
year he played with younger musicians who were not that dedicated and didn’t want to
be there for some of the time which showed during their rehearsals and shows.

a. Thought that most music camps find success in advertising the camp through visuals
such as videos and photos that could be posted on social media. Finds that most
students will be more willing to look into the camp if they see a cool informational video
showing what the camp is about. In this day and age, kids are a lot more exposed to
social media and visual advertising which allows them to be easily targeted by
advertisements. Also thinks that socializing within these camps plays a huge role in the
students experience and engagement in the camp. If they are given the chance to
communicate with other kids who are the same age and share the same musical
interests as them, they will be more interested in the camp and returning to it. Kids also
want to see how they will be improving in their skills and what new material they will be
learning. Also thinks that advertising how cool Telluride is could be really beneficial for
bringing in more kids. By doing this, more students from other states may be interested
in coming to Telluride for the camp. He also thought that teaching them about the
business of music would be really beneficial because it gives them more of an idea of
what a career in the music industry would look like. Advertising who will be leading the
camp also gives students a better insight to who they will be learning from which could
get them really excited.

Personal Ideas:
Students need to be advertised to through social media and common music websites. Kids that
play music may never really think about attending a music camp until they are either told about
it through their parents or they see something on social media. Just the other day while I was
scrolling through Instagram, I saw two advertisements for Berkeley's summer music camps. In
these advertisements, they showed what a students normal day would look like and what they
would be learning in just 45 seconds. These types of advertisements make camps look really
professional and cool to a teenager. It would be really beneficial to make a video of the Telluride
Jazz Academy that could be posted on social media and other websites. This video could
advertise the scenery, equipment being used, outdoor activities, age groups, and things that
they will be doing and learning at the camp. Most younger students won’t want to read an article
about the camp but if they saw a video advertising the camp they may be more engaged to
checking it out. Doing interviews with instructors may also be a good thing to do because it
gives the students a sense of who they will be learning from and their experience. Promoting
these videos on Instagram allows your video to appear on people’s feeds without them having
to be following the Telluride Jazz Festival page. I also think that advertising the camp on its own
tab on the Telluride Jazz Festival website could bring more attention to the camp. Showing a
variety of age groups on the website could potentially encourage kids to register if they see
other kids their age doing the camp. Posting more photos, videos, and descriptions about it on
the Telluride Jazz social media pages may allow more parents to see the camp and want to
show their kids it.

Website Suggestions:
1. Have the camp be on its own tab (not under the TSJ tab)
2. Add some more pictures of students practicing and being outdoors (maybe in a slideshow)
3. Put a video of what an average day at the camp looks like (if there is a video)
4. Clarify what ages can attend the camp and how much it costs on the main page
5. Clarifying what skill level they should be at with their instrument would look good as well
6. Really emphasizing that a festival pass is included with the tuition would be beneficial
7. For the registration page, it would look good if there were a few staff profiles
8. Having more pictures of Telluride might make more people want to come check it out
