Natural antifungal treatments are becoming increasingly important as yeasts and fungi

become progressively resistant to conventional antifungal drugs.

Most antifungal drugs only inhibit the growth of fungi (fungistatic), which gives them
opportunity to mutate and become drug-resistant!
The cell structure of fungi is similar to human cells, hence difficult to destroy without
damaging human cells as well. Synthetic antifungal drugs thus tend to have serious side-
effects. The best policy towards fungal infections is prevention.
While the immune system can and does overcome them while it is healthy and strong, an
impaired immune system can lead to a long uncomfortable struggle making life a misery.
The best ways to avoid fungal infections is to build health and keep away from practices
which infect you or suppress your immune system:

- Plan, work towards and maintain a healthy lifestyle, including eating a variety of
wholesome home-prepared meals, getting enough sleep, sun and exercise.
- Avoid antibiotic drugs unless absolutely necessary. Most things can be overcome using
a natural antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial herbs and foods. Certain antibiotics kill off
gut bacteria which compete against and keep fungi in check. Once the bacteria are gone,
the fungi proliferate and change from single-celled harmless forms to a parasitic network
of filaments which imbed themselves in your mucous membranes and start to invade your
body.
A quality probiotic(Ferments!) is important to restore a healthy balance of flora in the
affected area.
Herxheimer's reaction. This is a flare up of symptoms caused by the destruction of a
large number of candida cells releasing stored toxins within them, and causing
inflammation in adjacent tissues. This is a good sign, showing the treatment is working,
but if uncomfortable the dosage can be lowered to slow down the process. Plenty of water
should be taken to flush away the toxins.
Interesting fact:
Fungi resist drugs in a similar way to cancer cells. Some can simply pump the drug out
again. Others mutate, and become immune to the drug or proliferate like cancer cells to
dilute the effect of the drug.
The natural antifungal herbs on the other hand, has the potential to destroy many kinds of
fungus, or their sub-division of yeasts such as Candida Albicans.

Yeast fighting herbs:
PAU D'ARCO (lapacho, tahuari, taheebo tree)
Pau D’Arco is antibacterial, immune stimulant, antifungal, anti-inflamatory, cleancing,
tonic and antitumor benefits, and is used in many parts of the world to treat Candida and
other fungal infections.
As early as 1882, scientist had already isolated the compound lapachol from tree barks,
and the bacterial action of the compound was first confirmed as early as 1956 through
research work carried out in Brazil - for this reason, the pau d'arco is considered to be a
very valuable natural antibiotic remedy. Derivatives of this compound were also
subsequently shown to possess anti-fungal properties during further tests carried out late,
and the compound is known to be very effective against conditions such as ringworm, in
the treatment of vaginal thrush, and to treat cases of gastrointestinal candidiasis.
Pau D’Arco has been used as a herbal medicine dating as far back as the time of the
Incas. In the more recent past (during the past 50 years or so) Pau D Arco, and certain
isolated phytochemical compounds of the plant (lapachol and beta lapachone, for
instance), have been tested extensively in medical and scientific laboratory environments.
Results of these tests have documented effective anti-cancerous, anti-tumor and anti-
leukemic properties.
The heartwood of tabebuia aqvellaneda contains napthaquinones in lapacho have
significant antifungul activity - against Candida albicans in particular and are
antibacterial. Also Pau D'Arco has great amounts of quercetin, which are thought to
stimulate the immune system, cleanse the body and stimulate the production of red blood
cells.
traditionally Pau D’Arco used as a treatment for malaria, colitis, respiratory problems,
colds, cough, flu, fever; cancer, lupus, infectious diseases, inflammation of the prostate
gland, sexually transmitted diseases, boils and ulcers. In the herbal medicine systems of
the United States and Europe, pau d’arco has been used for psoriasis, liver disease,
Hodgkin’s disease, osteomyelitis, Parkinson’s disease and allergies, high blood pressure,
poor circulation, and anemia, and is thought to protect against cardiovascular disease.
Parts used: inner bark. for candida: Decoction: Simmer the dried bark or heartwood for at
least 8 minutes and drink one half to one cupful 2-4 times daily. The herbal tea form of
pau d'arco remedy is ineffective due to the insolubility of the naphthaquinone active
constituents in water - therefore the remedy cannot be used in the form of a tea. . Do not
prepare as an infusion/tea (that is, steeped without boiling), as the components do not
release easily into water.
(i usually let it set in the water over night, the simmer. it doesnt smell like anything, so i
wonder if grinding it into poweder in a coffee grinder and then adding it to foods will be
a good choice...?)

CALENDULA (Calendula officinalis(Asteraceae), pot morogold)
Calendula is a remarkable herb. have been used for medicinal purposes since at least the
12th century, The Egyptians considered them to have rejuvenating properties. In the
Hindu world, the flowers were used to adorn statues of gods in their temples, as well as a
colorant in food, fabrics, and cosmetics, and of particular interest, in the 18th and 19th
century calendula was used to color cheese. Calendula has historically been used as a
food, adding flavor to cereals, rice, and soups. The petals can be added to salads for their
brilliant color. As recently as 70 years ago, American physicians used calendula to treat
amenorrhea, conjunctivitis, fevers, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and burns, as well as minor
infections of the skin.
Some of the beneficial properties of calendula include antifungal, anticepticanti-
inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, lymphatic, anticeptic, detoxifying, mild estrogenic and
astringent. Calendula have a positive effect on the immune system. The flavonoids found
in calendula are a plant-based antioxidant that neutralizes the free radicals known to
suppress immune function.
Calendula has been shown to help wounds heal faster, by increasing blood flow and
oxygen to the affected area, which helps the body grow new tissue. It is also used to
improve skin hydration and firmness. A popular ingredient in lotions and salves,
calendula used topically for fungal infections including diaper rash, as well as for
inflammation, bruising, minor burns, bleeding, ulcerations and slow-healing wounds.
The antifungal properties of calendula could make it useful as an herbal remedy for
fungulinfections and ringworm.
Ear drops containing calendula are sometimes used to treat ear infections in children. A
few scientific studies have found no side effects.
Calendula has long been considered a detoxifying herb, and helps to treat toxicity that
ubderlies many fevers and infections. and systematic skin disorders, such as eczema nad
acne. The herb is also considered cleansing for the liver and gallblader and can be used to
treat problems affecting those organs. It has also been used to promote sweating, which
helps rid the body of toxins.
Calendula has mild estrogenic action and is often used to help reduce menstrual pain and
regulate bleeding. The infussions make and effective douche for yeast infections.
Calendula is also thought to inhibit the proliferation of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori,
which is associated with gastritis, peptic ulcers, stomach cancer, and very recently,
Parkinson’s Disease. Very good digestive aid.
An infusion can be made using 1 tsp (5-10g) of dried florets in 8oz (250 ml) of boiling
water. It should be steeped 10-15 minutes. Drink 2-3 cups of the infusion per day. Cooled
infusion can be used to make a compress by soaking a sterile dressing in cold tea.
Fresh or dried calendula petals are available in tinctures, liquid extracts, infusions,
ointments, and creams.
Calendula products should always be protected from light and moisture, and should not
be used after 3 years of storage.

BARBERRY - Berberis vulgaris L., also known as European barberry or simply
Barberry (in Russia we had hard candies made of barberis! oh were they delightful! and
my opinion, that if you do make candy - make it out of the healthy stuff!)
Medicinal use of barberry dates back more than 2,500 years. It has been used in Indian
folk medicine to treat diarrhea, reduce fever, improve appetite, relieve upset stomach, and
promote vigor, as well as a sense of well being. Today, it is widely used for medicinal
purposes in Iran, including for biliary disorders (such as gallbladder disease) and
heartburn.
This one of the three most common western medicinal roots containing berberine, which
has potent antifungal properties. Berberine demonstrates significant antifungal activity
while leaving beneficial microflora in the gut intact. Berberine has anti-inflammatory and
anti-microbial properties. It’s also an effective immune stimulate.B erberine has been
shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in test tubes, and may help the immune system
function better. The aqueous extract of barberry has beneficial effects on both the
cardiovascular and neural system. As such, it may be useful in the treatment of
hypertension, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), and some neuronal disorders, such as
epilepsy and convulsions. Recent studies suggest that barberry also has antioxidant
properties, and may help prevent certain types of cancer.
It's also good for treating diarrhea(including traveler's diarrhea and diarrhea caused by
food poisoning). Research has shown that berberine can effectively prevent candida
yeasts from producing lipase, an enzyme which they use to help them colonize.
A few studies have suggested that barberry improves symptoms faster than antibiotics,
perhaps because it has astringent properties. Early studies have shown berberine to have
promising anti-inflammatory and blood sugar-lowering effects
The below uses are based on tradition, scientific theories, or limited research:
Acetaminophen toxicity, anticonvulsant (treats seizures), antidepressant, antifungal,
antihelminthic (expels parasitic worms), antihistamine (treats seasonal allergies), anti-
inflammatory, antimicrobial (antiprotozoal), antimutagenic (reduces the rate of genetic
mutations), antioxidant (free radical scavenging), antiseptic, antiviral, appetite stimulant,
autoimmune, cancer, cardiac conditions (heart rate, contractility), cholagogue (promotes
the discharge of bile), cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), cholera (infection
of the small intestine that causes watery diarrhea), colitis (colon inflammation),
congestive heart failure, constipation, cystitis (bladder inflammation), diabetes, diarrhea,
eczema (skin rashes), eye infections, fever (typhus), gallbladder disorders, gallstones,
gout, heart disease, heartburn, infection, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure,
immunomodulation, indigestion (upset stomach), infections, irregular heartbeat, jaundice
(yellow color of the skin or eyes), kidney stones, liver cirrhosis (scarring of the liver and
poor liver function), low back pain, lung disorders, malaria, osteoporosis, pain (kidney),
parasitic infections, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psoriasis (skin redness and
irritation), rheumatism (joint and connective tissue disorders), scurvy (disease due to
vitamin C deficiency), sexually transmitted disease (chlamydia), skin graft healing, sore
throat, spleen disorders, stomach cramps, stomatitis (inflammation of the mucous lining
of any of the structures in the mouth), thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), tonic,
tuberculosis, urinary tract disorders, urolithiasis (stones in the urinary system), uveitis
(eye swelling), wound healing.
Dried organic barberries have a delicious tart flavor that complements savory and sweet
recipes alike. They are most commonly used in Iran to add tanginess to saffron rice and
meat dishes. Dried barberries also make an enticing addition to chicken salad, couscous,
roasted vegetables, and soups. If your recipe is too sweet or has a flavor that is
overwhelming the dish, using a couple scoops of dried barberries can help to mellow out
the sweetness.
There is not enough evidence to establish a dose for children. Certain dosages of barberry
may be unsafe for children. People using normal and appropriate doses of barberry do not
generally report side effects. Cases of nosebleeds and vomiting have been reported with
extremely high doses of this herb.
Dosing:
General: Traditionally, root bark is typically used as a tincture, 20-40 drops daily.
For sore throats, bladder infections, bronchitis, or yeast infections, a typical dose is one
cup of tea, prepared by steeping 1-2 teaspoons of whole or crushed berries in 150
milliliters of boiling water for 10-15 minutes and straining, or by steeping two grams of
root bark in 250 milliliters of boiling water for 5-10 minutes and straining.
For dental plaque and gingivitis, a dental gel containing an aqueous alkaloid extract of
the root and bark of Berberis vulgaris (1% berberine) has been used for three minutes,
three times daily, over a three-week period.
Adults should not take this for more than 7 consecutive days. Children should only take
for three days in a row. Not recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers.

CLOVES
Cloves are one of the highly prized spices, known and recorded for thousands of years,
widely recognized all over the world for their medicinal and culinary qualities. The spices
actually are the "flower buds" from evergreen rain-forest tree native to Indonesia.
Cloves contain some of the same phenols as Oil of Oregano, namely carvacrol and
thymol, among others, which are highly antifungal in nature.
Cloves act as an antimicrobial agent, killing parasites and bacteria in the digestive tract.
In appropriate dosage, it can help to relieve excessive gas bloating. There is some
evidence that certain compounds in clove act as antihistamines, keeping sinus
passageways clear and open. acaricidal (kills ticks and mites), acne, allergies, analgesic

GARLIC (Allium Sativum)
Since time immemorial, garlic, a big time immune booster, the infamous stinking rose,
brunt of many jokes, has been recognized in almost all the cultures for its medicinal
properties as well as culinary uses.
garlic cloves contain many noteworthy phyto-nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and
antioxidants that have proven health benefits. Total measured antioxidant strength
(ORAC value) is 5346 µmol TE/100 g.
Garlic may be particularly useful in preparation for cold and flu season, as it contains
compounds capable of killing a wide variety of organisms, including viruses and bacteria
that can cause earaches, colds and influenza. The respected research organization
Cochrane Database—which has repeatedly reported that the science does not support the
use of flu vaccine as a first-line defense—has also reviewed studies on the alternatives,
such as the use of garlic.
Garlic contains high levels of iodine which makes it a very effective treatment for
hyperthyroid conditions. garlic contains good levels of vitamin C.
Cute old fact: :)" Wine of Garlic - made by macerating three or four bulbs in a quart of
proof spirit is a good stimulant lotion for baldness of the head. Used in cookery it is a
great aid to digestion, and keeps the coats of the stomach healthy. For this reason,
essential oil is made from it and is used in the form of pills. If a very small piece is
chopped fine and put into chicken's food daily, it is a sure preventative of the gapes.
Pullets will lay finer eggs by having garlic in their food before they start laying, but when
they commence to lay it must be stopped, otherwise it will flavour the eggs. " :)
According to the latest studies, cooking garlic may render it a bit less potent, but most of
its active ingredients will remain active! A study published in the journal Food and
Chemical Toxicology4 warned that short-term heating reduces the anti-inflammatory
effects.
Use it raw to get the medicinal effects. For children or anyone who can’t take the taste of
raw garlic – Puree it in a blender with a little water or oil and apply it to the bottom of the
feet. This is an age old method which allows the beneficial agents of the garlic to absorb
into the body via the tender skin.

TURMERIC - Turmeric is demonstrated to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,

antifungal, and anti-cancer properties. It is taken as a blood purifier, and seems to have
blood sugar lowering effects.
Tumeric / Curcumin: Research shows that Curcumin was much better than conventional
drugs such as fluconazole at inhibiting the adhesion of Candida species.[2] Start with 1/4
teaspoon up to about 1/2 teaspoon twice a day. Make a glass of water with juice of a fresh
lemon and add the tumeric for an easy way to use the tumeric. Lemon juice is also an
excellent alkalising drink.
Turmeric has been shown to inhibit the growth of intestinal parasites H. Pylori and
Giardia Lambria.
·0 Turmeric has been in use since antiquity for its anti-inflammatory (painkiller),
carminative, anti-flatulent and anti-microbial properties.
·1 The herb contains health benefiting essential oils such as termerone, curlone,
curumene, cineole, and p-cymene.
·2 Curcumin, a poly-phenolic compound in the root, is the principal pigment that
imparts deep orange color to the turmeric. In vitro as well as in laboratory animal
studies have suggest that the curcumin may have anti-tumor, antioxidant, anti-
arthritic, anti-amyloid, anti-ischemic, and anti-inflammatory properties.
·3 This popular herb contains no cholesterol; however, it is rich in anti-oxidants and
dietary fiber, which helps to control blood LDL or "bad cholesterol" levels.
·4 It is very rich source of many essential vitamins such as pyridoxine (vitamin B6),
choline, niacin, and riboflavin, etc. 100 g herb provides 1.80 mg or 138% of
daily-recommended levels of pyridoxine. Pyridoxine is employed in the treatment
of homocystinuria, sideroblastic anemia and radiation sickness. Niacin helps
prevent "pellagra" or dermatitis.
·5 Fresh root contains very good levels of vitamin-C. 100 of root compose of 23.9
mg of this vitamin. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and a powerful natural
anti-oxidant, which helps the body develop immunity against infectious agents,
and remove harmful free oxygen radicals.
·6 Turmeric contains very good amounts of minerals like calcium, iron, potassium,
manganese, copper, zinc, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component
of cell and body fluids that helps in controlling heart rate and blood pressure.
Manganese is utilised by the human body as a co-factor for the antioxidant
enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Iron is an important co-factor for cytochrome
oxidase enzymes at cellular level metabolisms and required for red blood cell
(RBC's) productions.
Turmeric is one of the readily available, cheap herbs that contain notable phyto-nutrients
profile. At 1,59,277 µmol TE/100 g, its total-ORAC value or anti-oxidant strength is one
of the highest among known herb and spice species.
100 g of turmeric provides 53% of dietary fiber, (% of Recommended Daily Allowance,
RDA per 100 g)
138 % of vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine),
32% of niacin,
43 % of vitamin C,
21 % of vitamin E,
54 % of potassium,
517 % of iron,
340 %of manganese and
40 % of zinc.
but 0% cholesterol.
Just a few grams of turmeric per day either in the form of powder, crushed root or fresh
root can provide enough nutrients to help you keep away from anemia, neuritis, memory
disorders and offer protection against cancers, infectious diseases, high blood pressure,
and strokes.

is reported to dilate the bile ducts, therefore supporting liver function and helpful in cases
of fatty liver and hepatitis.
LAVANDER – Lavender has antifungal and antibacterial qualities which make it all the
more reason to have some around the house.
It’s good for the respiratory system, headaches and migraines, stress, burns, stings and
insect bites, and as a sleep aid.
LEMONGRASS - Lemongrass is antifungal, antibacterial, anti-parasitic and anti-
inflammatory. It helps to relieve digestive ailments and fluid retention, helps the body
regenerate connective tissues and ligaments, dilates blood vessels, improves circulation
and promotes lymph flow. It’s also used to treat bladder infections, varicose veins,
promote mental alertness and clarity, sinus and respiratory ailments
MYRRH – Myrrh shows numerous beneficial properties including anti-inflammatory,
antifungal, antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent, expectorant, and its ability to relax the
senses without sedating.
NEEM (Azadirachta indica)
The oil of the Neem nut is one of the oldest and most popular medicinal substances in
India.lant Parts Used: The bark, leaves, seeds and the small branches are all used in
herbal medicine. The oil obtained from the seeds (up to 50%) is also used used
medicinally. The oil from the seeds is often referred to as margosa oil.The leaves and
bark have a bitter taste and are mostly used in tea form, often combined with other herbs
such as spearmint and cinnamon.
The herb has also been used to eliminate unwanted intestinal parasites, and as an anti-
fungal agent for Candida.
OREGANO (Origanum vulgare) – name means "delight of the mountains" in Greek
Oregano, the herb, is a general tonic and immune booster. One active agent in oregano is
rosmarinic acid, which is a strong antioxidant that may support immune system health.
Oregano has one of the highest antioxidant activity ratings. Oil of oregano handles
pathogenic bacteria without disrupting beneficial bacteria.
Antifungal, Antibacterial, and May Even Kill MRSA
Carvacol and thymol, two phytochemicals in oregano, are powerful
antimicrobials. Research has shown EO from oregano may kill the foodborne
pathogen Listeria and the superbug MRSA (making it a useful addition to hand
soaps and disinfectants). According to one of the researchers involved in the
MRSA study:
"We have done a few preliminary tests and have found that the essential
oil from the oregano kills MRSA at a dilution 1 to 1,000. The tests show
that the oil kills MRSA both as a liquid and as a vapor and its
antimicrobial activity is not diminished by heating in boiling water."
Anti-inflammatory Properties
Oregano contains beta-caryophyllin (E-BCP), a substance that inhibits
inflammation and may also be beneficial for conditions including osteoporosis
and arteriosclerosis, as well as metabolic syndrome
One study found that adding an antioxidant-rich spice blend that included oregano to
meat prior to cooking reduced the level of malondialdehyde (a chemical marker for
oxidation) in the meat by 71 percent and levels in participants' urine by 49 percent. The
researchers used a blend of:
Cloves Cinnamon Oregano Rosemary
Ginger Black pepper Paprika Garlic powder
You can easily recreate this simply by mixing the dry spices together and rubbing them
onto the meat before you quickly sear it, or add them to your marinade.
But the real key lies in the oil of organic or wild harvested oregano, commonly called
Oregano Oil, or Oil of Oregano which contains two potent phenols - carvacrol and
thymol. These two phenols work synergystically creating an excellent anti-infectious
agent.
Oil of Oregano taken internally is helpful for hayfever and ragweed allergic reactions,
supports the lymphatic system, nerves and blood.
When purchasing oregano, you'll likely find two varieties: Mediterranean oregano (also
known as Greek oregano, Turkish oregano, and European oregano) and Mexican oregano.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs), because it inhibits the growth of E. Coli, Proteus and
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, bacteria that may cause UTIs. Yeast infections, including those
that are resistant to the commonly used drug Diflucan. Parasitic infections. Oregano oil
has been shown to be more effective against the parasitic amoeba Giardia than the drug
tinidazol. Food-borne illness. Many food-borne pathogens, including Listeria,
Salmonella, E. Coli, and Shigella dysenteria are inhibited by oregano oil. Not only may
adding the oil to foods help to kill such bacteria, but using the oil if you have food
poisoning may help to alleviate your symptoms.
Organic mountain grown Mediterranean oregano is the best choice. The oil base should
be pure cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. There have been many different applications
for this recently rediscovered natural herbal treatment of 2000 years.

CAT'S CLAW (Uncaria tomentosa)

Test tube studies indicate that cat's claw may stimulate the immune system, help relax the
smooth muscles (such as the intestines), dilate blood vessels (helping lower blood
pressure), and act as a diuretic (helping the body eliminate excess water).
Cat's claw also has antioxidant properties, helping the body eliminate particles known as
free radicals that damage cells. Scientists believe free radicals to contribute to health
problems, including heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants can help neutralize free
radicals and may reduce, or even help prevent, some of the damage they cause.
Some early studies suggest cat's claw may kill tumor and cancer cells in test tubes.
The most attention was given to the oxindole alkaloids found in the bark and roots of
Cats Claw, which have been documented to stimulate the immune system. It is these
seven different alkaloids that are credited with having a variety of different medicinal and
healing properties. The most immunologically active alkaloid is believed to be
Isopteropodin (Isomer A), which increases the immune response in the body and act as
antioxidants to rid the body of free radicals. Compounds found in Cat's Claw may also
work to kill viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms that cause disease, and they work
to inhibit healthy cells from becoming cancerous.
– Candida grows out of control in a weakened immune system, and Cat’s Claw is a strong
immune boosting herb that strengthens white blood cells.
Cat's Claw may help create support for the intestinal and immune systems of the body,
and may also creates intestinal support with its ability to cleanse the entire intestinal tract.
This cleansing helps create support for people experiencing different stomach and bowel
disorders, including: colitis, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and leaky bowel
syndrome.
In addition, in one study, human volunteers who took Cat's claw for 8 weeks showed
improved DNA repair.
Cat's Claw can often be found combined with other 'immune' herbs with similar healing
properties such as Echinacea and may:
·7 reduce pain and inflammation of rheumatism, arthritis and other types of
inflammatory problems.
·8 have anti-tumor and anti-cancer properties that inhibits cancerous cell formation.
·9 promote the healing of wounds.
·10 be useful for treatment of gastric ulcers and intestinal complaints
·11 help to relieve chronic pain.
·12 enhance immunity by stimulating the immune system.
·13 help people experiencing stomach and bowel disorders, including colitis, Crohn's
disease, irritable bowel syndrome, leaky bowel syndrome, gastritis and duodenal
ulcers, intestinal inflammation.
·14 help fight both viral and fungal infections such as Herpes and Candida
When brewing Cat's claw as a tea, add lemon.
There is no report of the side effects or serious adverse reactions till date and the herb can
be classed as a rather safe herbal remedy
