Dragonwings​ Final Project

To complete our ​Dragonwings​ Unit, you will have a choice of projects to complete.

The options are listed on the back of this page, along with the criteria for each one. Read ALL of
the information before you make your choice. Choices will logged by the teacher on the first day.
It will be a big waste of time if you start on one choice and decide to change it later. You will be
completing most of the project in class, but you may need to do some additional work at home to
get it turned in by the due date.​ (June 4, 2018)

Please circle the option you choose.


Use the boxes to check off the criteria as you complete it.

The project is due on: Monday June 4th and will be presented for grading.
Keep in mind, I will be taking off half a letter grade for every day the project is late.

Choices
1. DragonWings ​filmstrip- create visual scenes to see the events of the novel in sequence (at
least 12)
❏ Use a google slide template
❏ Include the title and author
❏ Take the readers through the most significant events of the novel.
❏ Each slide of the strip must have a picture
❏ A label for the part of the plot line it represents
❏ A caption (2-3 sentences) summarizing the scene.

2. Book Jacket: ​Create a book jacket that reflects the various elements of the novel. Be sure to
include:
o Front
o Title
o Author’s name
o Theme statement and paragraph explanation
o Appropriate graphics (not the same as the current covers)
o Inside/front – a summary of the novel—include at least two important quotes.
o Inside/ back – a paragraph about the author, Laurence Yep.
o Back – a review of the novel: why should someone read this book, what can we learn?

3. Add Another Chapter:​ Do you think the novel shouldn’t be over yet? Write another chapter!
Include the following:
o Use Mr. Yep’s style and Moon Shadow as a narrator.
o There should be dialogue – as modeled by the real novel.
o It should be a believable continuation of the novel
o ​At least ​2 pages typed

4. Newspaper, circa. 1903-1909:​ Create a newspaper that chronicles life in San Francisco
during the early 1900’s. Make sure you include:
o The name of your newspaper
o Appropriate headings, titles, dates, and formatting (look at the sample newspapers)
o Pictures
o 3 articles – The articles MUST include information from the novel or the provided articles.
Possible options are:
● Earthquake report
● Crime report

● Interviews with characters


● Advice column from the era
o Stories that may have appeared at that time (immigration, gold mining, Chinese culture,
etc.…)
o A puzzle relating to the novel – Options include:
● Vocabulary crossword
● Vocabulary word search
● Trivia questions

5. ​Paper Bag Book Report:​ After completing your novel you will review what you read while
completing a paper bag book report.
❏ On the front of the paper bag you will:
● Draw a scene from your novel.
● Include the title and author of the novel
● Your full heading.
❏ On the back of the bag you will write a plot line for your novel.
Be sure to include all parts of the plot line and a total of at least 10 events​. The exposition counts
as one event and consists of the main characters, the setting, and the conflict.
***Remember to use complete sentences.
❏ Inside the bag you will need to place at least 8 objects​that represent significant events in the
novel or aspects of the characters’ personalities. You will need an index card explaining the
significance of each item you place inside the bag
❏ Students will then share all aspects of their project with me in a presentation for a project
grade.

6. ​Student’s Choice​: Student’s creative ideas for this project must be presented and approved by
the teacher Day 1 of the assignment or this is not an option. We will establish the required
criteria together at that time.
