1. Describe the two main Vibrio cholerae bacteriophage elements that Formatted: Font: Italic, Complex
Script Font: Italic
are responsible for the disease cholera. Which two important
virulence factors are encoded by these bacteriophages, and by what
mechanisms do these factors contribute to disease?

2. Why are amyloid diseases frequently described as diseases of

protein misfolding/misprocessing?. With the help of examples
discuss the processes behind amyloid fibril formation.

3. EITHER

a) Describe properties and structure of human Papillomavirus (HPV).

Describe its capsid structure on the basis of the related SV40
virus. What diseases does papillomavirusesthis virus usually Comment [S1]: These?

cause? WhyHow does vaccination against is HPV protect Comment [S2]: Attenuated?

againstconsidered a cancer vaccine? What protein in HPV is

suspected to cause aberrant cell division / cancer?

OR

b) Explain how genetic linkage has lead to the identification and

subsequent cloning of the Slc11a1 (Nramp1) gene. Why would a
completed genome sequence make this process much easier
today? Comment [c3]: The Slc11a1 gene was
used as a model to explain how positional
cloning can be achieved. It was the first
mouse gene to be cloned in such a manner.
For genetic linkage to identify a “disease
gene” there must also be a mapable
END OF PAPER phenotype, this is well defined in this
example and I am looking for a description
of the phenotype. Further an explanation of
the crosses that would be required for
mapping is also necessary. The phenotype
is recessive susceptibility to infection,
therefore the students will have to explain
that a cross between an F1 mouse and a
mutant strain is required. This can be easily
represented in the results of work by
Bradley that showed the trait was
Mendelian.
