PREFACE

Govt. of India Policy on hydro power development lays stress on development of this clean
source to meet rising energy demands of the country.
Modernization of hydroelectric engineering practice to incorporate technological advances,
confirming to relevant Indian and International standards, meeting special Requirement of
operation in the large grid and isolated operation in remote areas/weak grid is required for rapid
economic development of a country.
Engineering practice for large and mega hydro power projects are discussed with special
reference to Bhakra and Beas projects which were the first mega hydro power projects of the
country. Beas hydro projects were designed in consultation with Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL)
and were the first mega hydro projects for supply of equipment by BHEL. Current practice is typified
by incorporating design of 2400 MW Tehri Hydro Power Complex of recently commissioned Tehri
Dam Hydro Power Project (1000 MW), as well as Koteshwar Hydro-electric Project (400 MW) and
under construction Tehri Pumped Storage Project (1000 MW).
An overview of the Book is included in each of the two volumes.
Pioneering Small hydro projects in India, Alternate Hydro Energy Centre was established at
IIT Roorkee (formerly known as University of Roorkee) in 1982. Engineering practices for various
types for the small hydro projects across the country are based on the experience of a large numbers
of small hydro planned and designed in the AHEC. BHEL was inducted in the small hydro sector with
supply of equipment of Kakroi Fall (1.5m fall) project on western yamuna canal in sonepat district
near Delhi (60 kms)after a meeting with the then BHEL Chairman Sh. K. L. Puri and subsequently for
large number of small hydro projects e.g. Sikasar and Mukerian SHP etc.
Author has been working on the electric design of large & small hydro electric projects for
over 55 years as associated/incharge of Bhakra & Beas Power Projects; Professor Hydro-electric,
WRDTC, Founder Director AHEC and later as Consultant for design of electro-mechanical works of a
large No. of hydro projects in the country to date. This was necessitated for looking after my
handicapped son Pradeep who suffered 80% brain damage in a fall in 1954. This required
extraordinary effort, sacrifices by the family and was the inspiration for writing this book which is
dedicated to him.
