escaped because someone had come shouting. This little boy will continue to
accompany him every day.
Iwan is just a child from a poor family in Batu, Malang, East Java. His
family consists of his mother, father, iwan and his four siblings, namely Mba

university level. Father who originally owned an angkot car, willing to sell it
to pay college fees iwan in IPB.
Of course the biggest thing is the mother's services. Ngatinah's mother,
who built the idea of saving, reminded us that we need to see a doctor, if the
car can be damaged at any time, if we need nutritious food. It was my mother
who arranged how many liters of rice to cook without leaving the next day,
when we should eat meat, chicken or tempeh. A mother who knows what to
pawn to buy new shoes for her anank and arranges our school fees. It was
Mum who split an omelet for two or three of her children. Mother is the one
who always hide the tempe fried so that is not spent on one of her children.
Simplicity and Mother's policies that save and build their small house.
Mba Inan, Iwan's second sister taught iwan and his siblings to keep
clean and make him interested in the theater world in high school. Mba Inan is
an active person. Since childhood, Inan mba diligently works to help alleviate
the economy of Mr and Mrs by selling food during the fasting month and
peddle it in the market. Everywhere Mba Inan always follow the various
competitions, from the intelligent meticulous to reading poetry. Mba Inan who
diligently study this when high school active in OSIS and follow the theater
activities. While studying at UB's Department of Fisheries mba inan
participated in the P4 debate competition and won up to National level by
giving pride and relief to their parents in paying their tuition. Similarly, Rini
and mira who became Iwan's encouragement in learning and living life
fulfilled his dream of having a room of his own.
During high school, Iwan opened up to try new things, namely theater
and poetry which further became one of his favorite. He is easy to get along
with a lot of people, and works to increase income through private as Rini
does. He also keep trying to get through PMDK IPB majoring in Statistics,
which is said to be very difficult for children from the village. Iwan proved
that it is wrong that with hard work will release the fear of the results
obtained, we are able to get through the most difficult thing like entering the
majors in IPB Statistics. So it is with the advice of Mother that has not been
forgotten Iwan "Try first, study diligent, do not be afraid"
In high school, he knew Nicolas Auclair, a Canadian student who
joined an exchange program between students to his school. Iwan started
learning English from Nico and befriended Nico. Initially many friends iwan
not approach Nico because he is a Caucasian, but iwan who invites Nico learn
and play together under Mount Panderman.
Iwan's wish to cross Sudirman Street is to become a "tie-worker" as
well as the support of Mother, Father and his siblings. Similarly, the decision
to accept a job in New York, which led him to become an Internal Client
Management Director at Nielsen Cunsumer Research, New York one of the
desire to see the outside world like kak Inan who had been to Japan. He
managed to have a room for him, an apartment after he worked for 10 years in
New York.
Iwan's love story did not end happily. The first time he fell in love
with an American woman named Audrey, who had the same hobby as yoga.
They met in the same yoga class, and at that moment they just stared at each
other. Then, a miracle, they met at Barneys, a department store apartment in
New York, and Iwan ventured to greet him and give his business card. Their
introductions are short, and their relationship is terminated by questions from
Audrey's parents that they are different beliefs. In the fall of ninth, Audrey is
married and they are still very good friends.

Characters, according to Abrams (1981: 20) are those who are featured in a

Iwan's thesis who has a strong character, smart and authoritative.
Mba Yanti: someone who helped Iwan while working at Nielsen's office to
abroad who has a smart character, good and hardworking.
To illustrate the character of the character, the author uses analytical
techniques and dramatic techniques. Analytical techniques are character
characters told directly by the author. The dramatic technique of character is
expressed through the physical representation and behavior of the characters,
the disclosure of the character's way of thinking, and the depiction by other
figures.
4. Groove (Plot)
Staton (1965: 14) argues that the plot is a story that contains a sequence
of events, but each event is linked only causally, one cause event or cause
another event Kenny (1966: 14) puts forward the plot as events is displayed in
a story that is not as simple as the author, because the author arranges the
events on a causal basis.
This novel uses a composite link with its success in New York City, the
author inserts some of his life events from the beginning of his journey to be
proven in "Five or six strokes come back barrageously and make me no longer
see New York around me, my little one in Batu, where we gather, eat, share
stories, share my grief I see my mother's face, her old robe, my sister's red and
white uniform, my father's pityy face and my sisters. " In addition to the
stories provided quickly, functional events occur subsequently quickly, the
relationships between events are also closely intertwined, and the reader
seems to always be forced to constantly follow them. And the author looks at
the parts of one sentence with another part, or one sentence with another
sentence, there is a relationship that is linking between sentence or
antarkalimat it. The passages in a sentence, or sentences in a paragraph, each
of which contains ideas, can not be randomly arranged.

5. Background (Settings)
The setting or setting is also called the fulcrum, which refers to the place,
time, and social environment in which the events are told (Abrams 1981:
175).
1). The place
The background contained in this novel is in New York City, Iwan's
home in Stone city, Venetian city, IPB campus, Nielsen Jakarta office,
rinjani mountain.
2). Time
Morning: "Walking in the morning from SoHo to my workplace at
Astor Place is one of my all-time favorite leg trips in New York".
Noon: "That afternoon, July 4, 2001, about two o'clock, maybe it will
be over before I can build a piece of life here.
Afternoon: "On a beautiful Saturday afternoon this fall, after following
4 yoga yoga, I took a look at Crime and Punishment Dostoevsky at Think
Coffe, University Place.
Night: "The night air is getting colder, some Central Park visitors are
starting to leave the pretty park in the center of New York City, I'm still
sitting holding the little boy".
3). Atmosphere
Gripping: "I felt a sharp knife in my left abdomen, the two tall men
holding my arms tighter, my fears growing, I did not see a single person
around the station.can it all end here, before a year of adventure in New
York? ".
Happy: "At that time we were all very happy because our only son got
through to IPB, Department of Statistics! First time in our family's long
history".
Sad: "Entering level two, I have to pay tuition and boarding fees, along
with Mbak Inan who has to pay his tuition as well .. We try everything we
can! Father works more night as a truck driver, Mbak Isa adds his private
tutoring students, as well as small work, but all is not enough, far from
enough, I try to be more concerned, more efficient, I want to finish college
as soon as possible Help us out of this poverty I remember the sentence I
sent to my mother one day because of my decision " Buk, I am kesel,
mlarat continue "-Mother, I'm tired, poor continue".
6. Strengths
The first time that the excess of this novel is the cover and synopsis of
the back of this book. Simple cover appearance and subtitles "The story of an
angkot driver from the city of Batu who became director of New York City"
made people curious to read the novel part, I was impressed with the ability to
process conversations conducted by the author, Iwan Setyawan. Iwan
Setyawan is so clever as to create a fantasy storey, a kid in a white-red
uniform as his interlocutor to make a dialogue so that the story does not feel
monotonous and can be directly connected to the part of the passage he wants
to tell.
The choice of a neat word also makes the reader lulled by this novel so
readers want to know what's going on in the next story. The insertion of
quote-quote from the author's own favorites is also interesting. This novel
uses a beautiful language style like poetry, but the young is understood
without the impression of long-winded. Simple, simple and honest, and
attractive representations make this novel more readily accepted by readers,
giving birth to a deep positive impression on the reader's heart. In this novel
there are also many implied messages that the family will always support
whatever our decision is in any difficult circumstances. That together with the
family, we can navigate the ocean as large as anything, as Iwan is offered to
work abroad and because of the support of his family, he dared to accept the
challenge and become successful because of it.
Weaknesses
In this novel there are also some shortcomings. The use of foreign
languages such as English which is not inserted by the Indonesian translation
makes the readers who do not understand English to be confused. The groove
used is a back and forth groove that is applied in each chapter to make the
reader bored. Easy to guess where to take the story. From the beginning tells
the story of her, Father, Mother, Sisters, and of course like a short biography
of Iwan Setyawan in the form of fiction. And we are made to expect that this
book can pump semnagat a child from poor families to pursue his ideals.
However, this book only tells the life experience of Iwan, the writer from
small until he got a position as Director of Internal Client Management at
Nielsen Consumer Research, New York.
7. Values In The Story
Religious Values
In this novel there are many excerpts concerning religious values of how
Iwan remembered words that were inappropriate for him to express his regrets
of lawlessness to his mother, as well as the religious values of Iwan while on a
campus that began praying and learning together with some of his themes
become positive and useful value for Iwan.
Moral values
Moral value is the value associated with ahlakdengan ata good man good
or bad character.
There are some moral values from the novel 9 Summers 10 Autumns from
some of the stories that are visible from the language in use when Iwan
complained to his mother of poverty that during this time he lived, Iwan
seemed unable to restrain his emotions but with respect to his mother Iwan
was still thinking his mother's feelings at the time.
Social Value
Social value is the value associated with norms in the life of the
community such as giving each other, mutual help and tolerance.
In this novel shows some social values by the author by presenting the
behavior of some characters who have the nature of mutual help with the
difficulty Iwan in the novel and there are some figures who showed their
social values well even the reader can deduce the positive value of the novel.
Culture Value
Cultural value is the concept of basic problems that are very important
and valuable in human life such as customs, arts, beliefs or ceremonies.
This novel gives the impression of cool because in addition to the
inspirational content of this novel can be a knowledge for the reader with the
existence of some cultural values as quoted by his mother "mangan ora
mangan wes important home" his mother Iwan said like that because the
customs in Java better get together with the family from being separated from
the family, the quote makes the cultural value that readers of the novel can
take.
Aesthetic value
Aesthetic value is related to art, beauty in literature about language, plot
and theme.
The aesthetic value of a novel varies depending on the theme and story,
such as this novel which is uniquely packed with a cover of a novel novel
entitled 9 Summers 10 Autumns written with a good author experience and
attention to art in the language by bringing together the theme and content of
this novel , so the reader is very carried away from the journey along the way
Iwan Setyawan.
8. Moral Dash (Mandate)
Morals in literature usually reflect the author's life view, his views on the
value of truth, and that's what the writer wants to convey to the reader.
The content of this novel gives the impression readers easily understand the
contents in convey so that the moral message can be in the know that everyone has
the right to have desires and dreams then pursue your dream with whatever you
have and do not ever feel small and embarrassed by what we have because with
effort and hard work is what will bring us into our success later.
The author gives the message and its own impression, Iwan Setyawan as the
author gives some moral messages such as religious messages quoted in the Iwan's
spelling when lecturing at IPB and taught to recite by his friends and follow
pengajian in campus or in kos with the moral message of the quote that no matter
how busy we or wherever we must still be able to perform the five daily prayers
and recite. There is also a social moral message that everyone can live anywhere
without the help of others then be grateful with the help of what others have
around you.
