Temporary chlorination of Waneta -
Green Gables water system
The City of Trail, under the direction of the Interior
Health Authority, will commence temporary chlorina-
tion of the Waneta – Green Gables water system.
Question: What should I do? Answer: You do not need
to boil your water or take other corrective actions.
Question: Are there any health effects? Answer:
Chlorination of a system is not an emergency. If a
Drinking Water Advisory was required, you would
have been notified immediately. Consumers with
health concerns related to chlorine in drinking water
may choose to use bottled water or a safe alternative
source during this period.
Question: What happened? Answer: Total coliform
bacteria were found in the Waneta – Green Gables water
distribution system on May 1, 2018 and May 15, 2018.
Question: What is being done? Answer: The City of
Trail will be adding chlorine to the water distribution
system on May 24, 2018 until June
15, 2018. Addition of chlorine to dis-
infect water may react with iron and/
or manganese that may be deposited
in water mains, breaking it loose and
causing some temporary discolor-
ation of water. This could cause a
black or reddish-brown color, but it
does not present a health threat.
Consumers may want to let the
water run for a few minutes to flush
plumbing of discoloured water
before using it for cooking or laun-
dry. Fish tanks and bait shops should
not use chlorinated water in tanks
for this period of time. The City of
Trail anticipates resolving this prob-
lem within three to four weeks.

can be impacted during and after floods. If you are unsure
of the safety of your water or uncertain about how it is
impacted, then you should use an alternate source that is
not affected by floods, such as bottled water.
Individuals with compromised immune systems and
chronic illnesses, infants, or the elderly are at higher risk
when the drinking water is affected. Floods may signifi-
cantly increase risk to your health by introducing raw
sewage, chemical contaminants and debris into water
sources.

It is important to remember the following when your
drinking water is affected by floods:
• Do not drink or use any well water that has been
contaminated with flood waters. Do not swallow
water while you are showering or bathing. Your
drinking water sources may need to be treated and
tested before consumption can resume.
• For cleaning of your dishes, rinse them for a min-
ute in diluted bleach (one tablespoon of household
bleach per gallon of tap water). If you are using a
dishwasher, use the hot wash and dry cycle.
• Many disease causing microbial agents, such as E.
Coli may be present in water impacted by flood-
ing. Wash your hands with soap after contact with
flood waters or handling items that have come into
contact with flood waters.
If you are using a Public Water Supply System:
• Contact your supplier for information and pay
attention to information shared by your local media
such as community bulletins, newspapers and local
radio stations.
• You can also visit your Regional District website to
see if your drinking water is impacted by the flood.
• Your water supplier may issue a Boil Water Notice
or Do Not Consume advisory based on the health
risks.

If you are using a Private Water system:
• Do not drink or use water that has been impacted
by floods.
• Your drinking water source needs to be tested and
may require treatment before consumption can

Bears can become a big nuisance this time of year as
they are often attracted to bagged garbage that has been
left in easily accessible outdoor trashcans. To help with
this issue, the City asks all residents to store their garbage
in a secure place until their scheduled collection day. For
those who don’t have access to a secure area, the City of
Trail and local nonprofit agency Natural Control Alter-
natives Society (NCA) have set up two communal bear-
proof garbage bins for the public’s use. One bin is placed
in Sunningdale at the end of Hazelwood Drive (near the
pump-house) and the other is located at the City’s Public
Works yard (3370 Highway Drive) in Glenmerry. The bins
are available now until late fall.
This is an additional service to curb side garbage pickup
and users are asked to make a $4/bag payment in the
secure money collection box located on the front of the
bins. The fees will help offset the tipping and maintenance
fees that will be incurred by the City and NCA.

RDCK residents
The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is
making sandbags available for residents who are expe-
riencing or want to be prepared for flooding. Unfilled
bags and sand are available at several locations across the
RDCK and there is no cost.
“Sandbags can be a smart, proactive move for anyone
who lives near a creek, river or lake with rising levels and
wants to protect their property,” said Andrew Bellerby,
RDCK’s General Manager of Fire & Emergency Services
and Regional Fire Chief. “Some areas of the RDCK and
neighbouring districts are already facing significant flood-
ing – and with rain and warm temperatures in the coming
days, we urge people to take steps to be flood prepared.”

Position Summary
Working under the direction of the Public Works Foreman, the
Utility Operator will be required to perform all duties currently

in the operation of equipment and maintenance of municipal
public works related to water, sewer, building facilities
(including HVAC), roads (including snow plowing) and parks
infrastructure.
The ideal candidate must have excellent multi-tasking,
communication and organizational abilities and diverse
talents in trade related skills. Certification in water and sewer
systems operation is essential. Certification or demonstrated
skills in a trade or vocation such as electrical, mechanical,
carpentry, plumbing, painting, building systems maintenance
or pneumatic/ instrumentation maintenance is preferred.
This is a full - time 40-hr work week position including a wage
of $32.04/hr. and an accompanying benefits package as per the
CUPE Collective Agreement.

knowledge of municipal infrastructure, and knowledge

Meadow Creek Organics

Owner and operator Rachel Dugdale got into organic farming because she
believed it was “the one thing not harmful to the rest of the planet.” With a
deep and reverent love of the Earth, Rachel strives to honour the land she
works with as much as possible, and has been doing so since the farm was
started six years ago.
Meadow Creek Organics focuses on mixed seasonal vegetables and a small
selection of flowers, which can be enjoyed through the Meadow Creek Or-
ganics Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program from June to Oc-
tober, and from the Meadow Creek Store. Rachel Dugdale is also a strong
supporter of the Lardeau Valley Sunday Market, and can be found there
every Sunday selling her produce.

Vince McIntyre
Owner/operator Vince McIntyre came to the Lardeau Valley in 1973,
where he was inspired by the old time farmers such as Jim MacNicol
and Roy Lake who were farming cattle, potatoes, and small patches of
grain. Vince has followed this tradition, and has inspired many young
farmers over the years to pursue agriculture as a living. He cultivates a
number of acres around Argenta.
Vince does much of his farming in partnership with animals, using hors-
es for planting and plowing and raising cattle to fertilize his fields. He
sees that farming with animals is a perfect complement: “It’s simple and
it works.” Vince grows in rotation, letting some of his plots rest, culti-
vating some for hay, oats and peas to feed his animals, and the rest for
growing certified KOGS organic winter storage vegetables.
Produce can be bought: in the Lardeau Valley at the Meadow Creek
Store, the Argenta Fall Fair and the LV Harvest Festival; in Kaslo at Cornu-
copia, Front Street Market, and Sunnyside Naturals; and in Nelson at the
Kootenay Co-op, Ellison’s Market and the Cottonwood Market in the fall.

The Pig Farm - Thomas Lunde and Eyn Khalsa Lang

Thomas Lunde got into raising pigs after being inspired by an article on pastured pigs. He
started out with six pigs, which has now grown to about 40 head of Large Black,and Eyn
Khalsa Lang has partnered with Thomas in the managing of this herd. Large black are one
of the original heritage breeds in Canada, and the one claimed to have made Canadian
bacon famous. These pigs are raised on a combination of commercial feed, compost from
local groceries, and pasture. An E-license allows the Pig Farm to sell 1/4s, 1/2s and full

Willet Peak Organics

Willet Peak Organics is run as a family business by Lila and Swen Birch. They were inspired
by the cultural value for agriculture that they observed while travelling in Europe and
strive to be part of that movement in Canada. Willet Peak Organics is a certified organ-
ic seed and table potato farm located on the Lake Head and Beyond Society farmlands in
Meadow Creek. They have been operating now for 4 years. Another major motivator for
Willet Peak Organics is acknowledging climate change and the extreme weather experi-
enced in many of the places we currently import food from, and the importance of being
part of a secure local food system. In that spirit, Willet Peak Organics is working on devel-
oping seed potatoes adapted to local climate and its changes, and thus has a diverse va-
riety of seed and eating potatoes. Willet Peak Organics is also working towards establish-
ing grain in rotation with potatoes to provide further feed, food and straw in the future.

Under A Penny Recycling Centre is now closed

We want to thank Trowelex very much for providing a great building for this recycle shop.
This store has served the community Of Castlegar and area for three years providing free
(by donations) clothing, household goods, books and a happy environment for socializing.
We all feel so sad about this recycling centre closing. A lot of families
have come to depend on this place to help them out in hard times.
This wasn’t a store in the normal sense –all items were free and
if the person wanted to donate, that would be up to them. The
donations covered the utilities, garbage bins, snow removal and
Trowelex took care of the rest. The majority of items donated were
of wonderful quality and quite suitable for reuse or repurposing.
If there is an organization that is interested in sponsoring us,
we would like to continue to save valuable products from the

 Seeking volunteers and
roosts for BC Bat Counts
The Kootenay Community Bat Program (KCBP) is
seeking volunteers and bat colonies for the Annual Bat
Count. This citizen science initiative encourages residents
to count bats at local roost sites. “Bat counts are a wonder-
ful way for residents to get involved in collecting impor-
tant scientific information” says biologist Mandy Kellner,
coordinator of the BC Community Bat Program. “No spe-
cial skills are needed, you can be any age and you can relax
in a deck chair while counting.”
The Annual Bat Count will collect baseline data on bat
populations before the devastating White Nose Syndrome
fungal disease affects bats in the province. “White Nose Syn-
drome is estimated to have killed more than seven million
bats since it was first discovered in eastern North America
a decade ago,” says Leigh Anne Isaac, coordinating biologist
of the KCBP. “In March 2016, the disease was detected just
east of Seattle and has now spread within Washington State.

ride the bus for free for two days of their choice during
the month of June.
For the 30th year in a row, BC Transit and its partner
communities are offering the popular GradPASS program
for graduating Grade 12 students all over British Colum-
bia. “Congratulations to BC’s newest high school gradu-
ates. I hope grads will take advantage of this excellent
opportunity for free transit,” said Claire Trevena, Minister
of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Our goal is to sup-
port young people in taking transit now and hopefully for
life: GradPASS is just one we’re working to build a culture
of transit users in communities across the province.”
GradPASS was first introduced in Vancouver in 1988
to encourage safe transportation options during prom
season. The Victoria Regional Transit System adopted
the program in 1990, with other communities following
suit over the years. Today, over 50 communities across the
province offer GradPASS cards to new grads every May.
“Graduating high school is one of the most significant
milestones in the lives of many young people,” said Erinn
Pinkerton, BC Transit Interim President and Chief Exec-
utive Officer. “BC Transit is pleased to congratulate the
class of 2018 and to remind them of the importance of
choosing transit as a safe, efficient transportation alterna-
tive – especially at this time of well deserved celebration.”
