Lesson overview:
This is lesson 2 of 2. Throughout this lesson students will develop an increased awareness of how
digital systems can be used to create and publish an animation (ACARA, 2014). Students will
explore the program GoAnimate and learn about its functions. Students will then create an
animation to accompany a poem they have written in the previous lesson.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this lesson students will have explored and created a video animation using
GoAnimate to share with their peers. Students will also transform their written work into an
animation through the use of digital technologies

Curriculum links:
-Design a user interface for a digital system, generating and considering alternative designs
(ACTDIP018)

-Design, modify and follow simple algorithms represented diagrammatically and in English
involving sequences of steps, branching, and iteration (repetition) (ACTDIP019)

-Implement digital solutions as simple visual programs involving branching, iteration (repetition),
and user input (ACTDIP020)

Resources:
-IWB
-26 computers
-Internet connection

Formative Assessment:
-Students participation and contributions towards both small group and whole class discussions
will be observed and recorded throughout this lesson.
-Students’ abilities to problem solve, work collaboratively and draw information from their peers
will also be observed.

Summative Assessment:
-Each student will present their animation to the class.
-Students will be marked according to:
• Their ability to complete the task in the allocated time frame
• The animations suitability and identifiable links to their poem.
• Imagination and creativity
• Ability to include and utilise the requested and demonstrated features of the
site.
Orientation Phase:
-Whole class discussion about prior knowledge of animation. Discuss with students different
types of animation including: Classical and digital 2D animation, digital 3D Animation, stop-
motion, clay animation, flip animation.

Teacher explains how animation works by using lots of different pictures being shown one
after the other to make a scene.

-Introduce students to GoAnimate by showing this clip or a different animation of the

teachers choice:

Enhancement Phase:
-Teacher explains that students will use GoAnimate to create an animation for the poems
they had written.

-Using the IWB Teacher is to open GoAnimate and demonstrate to students how the program
works and which functions they will engage with for this task.
Functions to include:
-Select a background
-Select a character
-Add actions
-Add expressions
-Add props
-Use text to speech
-Explain what students will be assessed on

-Students to begin work on their individual animations

-Teacher is to walk around to assess students’ progress and identify any issues students may
have

-If common issues arise teacher to use the IWB to explain and demonstrate solutions to the
whole class.

Synthesizing Phase:
-Each student shares their animations with the class

-As a whole class students express how they felt about the program, reveal positive and
negative experiences and what they have learnt about animation.
