Report of conventional Corrosion detection method

LRUT
The method employs mechanical stress waves that propagate along an elongated structure
while guided by its boundaries. This allows the waves to travel a long distance with little loss
in energy. Nowadays, LRUT is widely used to inspect and screen many engineering structures,
particularly for the inspection of metallic pipelines around the world. In some cases, hundreds
of meters can be inspected from a single location. There are also some applications for
inspecting rail tracks, rods and metal plate structures.

C-SCAN
This method consists of applying an AC electromagnetic signal, or current, to a pipeline
through a conductor attachment. In the same general area as this conductive attachment, an
electrical ground is also established in soil 30 to 100 meter away from the pipeline under
study. The signal generator is then turned on and current “signal” applied to the pipeline. The
C-Scan detector is then walked down the pipeline, and measurements of an electromagnetic
field strength coming from the pipeline are made. The C-Scan just investigate the coating
condition and does not give any information about pipeline wall thickness or any corroded
area of pipeline.

AUT (R Scan)
AUT Inspection offers a range of Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) services including Time
of Flight Diffraction (ToFD), Phased Array (PA), corrosion mapping, and complete weld
inspection. AUT is a high speed, high accuracy remote access ultrasonic corrosion mapping
system designed to evaluate the condition of assets as storage tanks, pipelines, pressure
vessels and other critical equipment, supporting efficient inspection program that support
integrity management processes to ensure effective and safe operation.

Ultrasonic Testing
UT is a family of non-destructive testing techniques based on the propagation of ultrasonic
waves in the object or material tested. In most common UT applications, very short ultrasonic
pulse-waves with center frequencies ranging from 0.1-15 MHz, and occasionally up to 50
MHz, are transmitted into materials to detect internal flaws or to characterize materials. A
common example is ultrasonic thickness measurement, which tests the thickness of the test
object, for example, to monitor pipework corrosion.

MFL
Magnetic flux leakage is a magnetic method of nondestructive testing that is used to detect
corrosion and pitting in steel structures, most commonly pipelines and storage tanks. The
basic principle is that a powerful magnet is used to magnetize the steel. At areas where
there is corrosion or missing metal, the magnetic field "leaks" from the steel. In an MFL tool,
a magnetic detector is placed between the poles of the magnet to detect the leakage field.
Analysts interpret the chart recording of the leakage field to identify damaged areas and to
estimate the depth of metal loss.

IR
IR thermography is applied to detect hidden corrosion on carbon steel pipelines for oil
transportation. Two approaches are proposed: the first is based on the processing of a
single thermo gram taken at the optimum time after a finite pulse heating of a large area of
the external surface; the second technique is carried out by scanning the pipeline by means
of a device composed of a linear lamp and a thermo graphic camera which move jointly over
the surface to test. A suitable reconstruction provides a map of the tested surface with
possible hot spots in correspondence with the corroded areas. The analysis of the thermal
problem by Finite Element Method is used to optimize the experimental parameters. The
experimental results demonstrate a detection capability starting from 15 % of wall thickness
reduction.
