What is a conceptual framework? How do you prepare one? This article defines the meaning
of conceptual framework and lists the steps on how to prepare it. A simplified example is added
to strengthen the reader’s understanding.
In the course of preparing your research paper as one of the requirements for your course as an
undergraduate or graduate student, you will need to write the conceptual framework of your
study. The conceptual framework steers the whole research activity. The conceptual framework
serves as a “map” or “rudder” that will guide you towards realizing the objectives or intent of
your study.
What then is a conceptual framework in the context of empirical research? The next section
defines and explains the term.
Definition of Conceptual Framework

A conceptual framework represents the researcher’s synthesis of literature on how to explain a
phenomenon. It maps out the actions required in the course of the study given his previous
knowledge of other researchers’ point of view and his observations on the subject of research.
In other words, the conceptual framework is the researcher’s understanding of how the
particular variables in his study connect with each other. Thus, it identifies the variables
required in the research investigation. It is the researcher’s “map” in pursuing the investigation.
As McGaghie et al. (2001) put it: The conceptual framework “sets the stage” for the
presentation of the particular research question that drives the investigation being reported
based on the problem statement. The problem statement of a thesis presents the context and the
issues that caused the researcher to conduct the study.
The conceptual framework lies within a much broader framework called theoretical
framework. The latter draws support from time-tested theories that embody the findings of
many researchers on why and how a particular phenomenon occurs.
Step by Step Guide on How to Make the Conceptual Framework
Before you prepare your conceptual framework, you need to do the following things:
1. Choose your topic. Decide on what will be your research topic. The topic should be within
your field of specialization.
2. Do a literature review. Review relevant and updated research on the theme that you decide to
work on after examination of the issue at hand. Preferably use peer-reviewed and well-known
scientific journals as these are reliable sources of information.
3. Isolate the important variables. Identify the specific variables described in the literature and
figure out how these are related. Some abstracts contain the variables and the salient findings
thus may serve the purpose. If these are not available, find the research paper’s summary. If
the variables are not explicit in the summary, get back to the methodology or the results and
discussion section and quickly identify the variables of the study and the significant findings.

4. Generate the conceptual framework. Build your conceptual framework using your mix of
the variables from the scientific articles you have read. Your problem statement serves as a
reference in constructing the conceptual framework. In effect, your study will attempt to answer
a question that other researchers have not explained yet. Your research should address a
knowledge gap.
Example of a Conceptual Framework

Statement number 5 introduced in an earlier post titled How to Write a Thesis Statement will
serve as the basis of the illustrated conceptual framework in the following examples.
Thesis statement: Chronic exposure to blue light from LED screens (of computer monitors and
television) deplete melatonin levels thus reduce the number of sleeping hours among middle-
aged adults.
The study claims that blue light from the light emitting diodes (LED) inhibit the production of
melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep and wake cycles. Those affected experience
insomnia; they sleep less than required (usually less than six hours), and this happens when
they spend too much time working on their laptops or viewing the television at night.

Notice that the variables of the study are explicit in the paradigm presented in Figure 1. In the
illustration, the two variables are 1) number of hours devoted in front of the computer, and 2)
number of hours slept at night. The former is the independent variable while the latter is the
dependent variable. Both of these variables are easy to measure. It is just counting the number
of hours spent in front of the computer and the number of hours slept by the subjects of the
study.
Assuming that other things are constant during the performance of the study, it will be possible
to relate these two variables and confirm that indeed, blue light emanated from computer
screens can affect one’s sleeping patterns. (Please read the article titled “Do you know that the
computer can disturb your sleeping patterns?” to find out more about this phenomenon) A
correlation analysis will show whether the relationship is significant or not.

Dear Jester, I believe that what you intend to do is to see how the commuter’s perception of
traffic in EDSA influences his/her attitude such as level of temperament, aggressive behavior,
and level of stress however you want these variables measured. People vary in their perception
of things so that perception will be your dependent variable. The attitude factors mentioned are
independent variables. If you have a better measure of traffic such as the waiting time of
commuters at the MRT or LRT stations, then I believe that would be a better measure.

I see, you should make a comparison between IT students using ebooks and those using
textbooks as reference or teaching materials. Your dependent variable will be their academic
performance, say their exam score or grade in the subject where the textbook/ebook is used.
But of course you have to define the difference between textbook and ebook because an ebook
could be a textbook. Maybe what you mean by textbook is a printed reference material. And
there should be a basis (review of literature) that serves as the theoretical framework of your
study. For example, literature or theory explaining why ebooks are better than textbooks or
vice-versa.

Sorry to bother you – excellent article and you are very kind helping others. I’ve tried to get
answers from what you have told others but as this is the first conceptual framework I have put
together, I’m struggling. My dissertation is on the impact that Wellbeing has on company
performance.
Q1: Am I right in thinking that we only include the factors that will be discussed in the
dissertation (ie, if I am not looking at external factors, I don’t include it in my framework? Or
do I acknowledge that they are there?)
Q2: Would I be correct to start with impacts on Wellbeing (single arrow towards it) then have
arrows out of Wellbeing with the benefits (reduced turnover, customer satisfaction etc). From
those benefits, single arrows point to company performance? So research will look to prove all
the links I have made in the middle (i.e. Customer NPS for increased satisfaction)

Dear Jordan, here are my answers based on my understanding of your proposed study:
Question 1: There are many studies done on the impact of well-being on employee performance
(e.g. less absenteeism, passionate work attitude, etc.). And of course, you have to define what
you mean by well-being here, to make it measurable. It may be context or non-context specific.
Before coming up with your conceptual framework, you should come up with an argument
(your thesis) based on your review of related literature. Which among those factors you studied
appear to be well grounded? Hence, it is you who will determine which specific variables you
will examine given your scope and limitations. There are many factors that influence company
performance, but which ones really matter? The findings of other authors serve as your guide.
Question 2: Your question is a bit tricky as I may misunderstand your explanation. My
understanding of your description looks like this:
–>Impacts on Wellbeing–>Benefits (turnover, etc.)–>Company performance
It seems that you are not clear of your unit of analysis, i.e., will you examine the individuals in
that company or will you examine the company as an organization? Is there such thing as
company well-being? Do you have a way to measure it? If your focus is not the organization
but the individuals that compose it, then your dependent variable should be employee
performance. By the way, how will you measure impact if it is part of your framework?
Probably what you mean is:
Well-being (benefits such as job-related factors that affect well-being) –> Employee
performance (e.g. job performance)

Dear Amirah, that’s a good study. Job satisfaction has many dimensions. Just focus on some
variables which you can measure in your study and put them in your conceptual framework as
your independent variables that influence job satisfaction as dependent variable. You may then
use job satisfaction as the independent variable to predict work performance as dependent
variable (as Dole rates it). For example, company wage rates –>job satisfaction –> job
performance

Dear Edgar, it’s you as a researcher who should define that based on your literature review.
You just have to look at your objectives. What do you intend to do and what variables are
important that would help you understand the phenomenon at hand? If your study is about
students’ performance in Mathematics, then by all means, use Mathematics as your dependent
variable. And Mathematics performance is determined by say: sex, genes, interest in the
subject, among others. These are your independent variables.

External Debt are: inflation, external debt, Exchange rate and many more while variable used

Economic growth and independent variable(s) is inflation, exchange rate or EXTERNAL

section of your literature, perhaps you can find an equation that predicts GDP using a set of

you looking trying to study? Does it have something to do with training effectiveness in
medical schools? What is your intention in doing the study? Airway suctioning is just one of
the procedures to relieve patients of whatever obstruction there is along the respiratory system.
Answers to these questions will help you build your conceptual framework.
And what do you mean by CCU? Is it Colorado Christian University?

Demographic variables appear to be inappropriate in your framework because your unit of
analysis is not the individual but the travel agency? A backgrounder on your study would help

clarify the relationship between 4Ps program and academic performance. What are measures
or indicators of the 4Ps program that you want to correlate with academic performance? Are
there features in the program that impact on academic performance? Also, you might want to

simply my mistake to put demographic attributes (age, gender, etc.) in my table of variables so
my coach confused why they are not in the framework. I was just freaking out right away cause
it’s just so basic.

My research is to evaluate travel style A by comparing it to travel style B through the same
attributes of both styles. So I want to prove style A attributes are better/have higher ratings than

performing effective project risk management contributes significantly to overall project

dependent variable is adoption or non-adoption of risk management. But of course, you have

Your title suggests a description of the situation in upper Egypt and I believe there is no need

You’re right. Variables are units of the phenomenon that you would want to understand that
needs to be measurable in the quantitative research approach. It defines your unit of analysis,
that is, that which you are studying whether that is the individual, a group, a social organization,
among others. In qualitative research, you dig down deeper than just numbers. For example,
you study how a person thinks: his/her opinions, reasons, or motivations which need not be
quantified. Qualitative studies can be used as basis for developing ideas or hypothesis that will
be tested in quantitative research.

Dependent variable is Practice.
I assume that; what people do (practice) is a function of how they feel (perception).

Dear Desserie, when you do research, you always have to be clear on what you want to resolve
or what to do. Family values is too broad a topic to research on. Just identify one issue related
to family values. In other words, you have to be specific by stating what you want to find out
through research. For example, people throw garbage into the open cargo area of my pickup
truck. I am curious what family values were inculcated in that person that made him or her
throw trash into other people’s vehicle. There is a need to define family values and relate it to
the act of throwing garbage. For a start, you may read this
