What I Need (WIN) Time

Middle School Level Proposed plan

Farmington is a learning community that maintains high expectations for the learning and
achievement of all students. The teaching staff of East Middle School is a) committed to
providing academic support during the school day for all students, and b) committed to
minimizing unwanted interruptions during instructional time; we put forth the following
proposal for What I Need (WIN) time.

The existing teaching schedule at East Middle School would be modified in the following way.
● Every day, for 30 minutes a day, the daily schedule will include one period of student
resource time.
● Each day, the daily teaching load would be five (5) teaching periods, one (1) unassigned
preparation period, and one (1) What I Need period (WIN)
● Teachers would be expected to work with students during WIN time, including but not
limited to enrichment, reteaching, test mastery, etc.
● This What I Need schedule would become effective at the start of the 2016-17 school
year.
● Groups of students will be assigned to individual WIN teacher based on NWEA scores
and teacher assessment/recommendation.

● Instructional Support for content
● Homework Support
● Expanded learning opportunities
● Peer Tutoring (NJHS, WEB leaders)

● Counselor support groups

Tools/Resources:

Compass Learning
Moby
Readers Apprenticeship

Schedule: WIN period will take place every day during the same time.

During WIN students can take advantage of the above listed academic opportunities in addition
to many more. Students also learn valuable time management skills, responsibility and
accountability.
Expectations of Students
● Each student reports directly to his/her WIN teacher.
● A student may attend only one destination during WIN.
● Upon arrival to his/her destination, a student must sign in on a log sheet which will be
provided by WIN teacher.
● A student who is truant for any reason from his/her assigned destination will be subject to
the school truancy policy.
● All behavioral expectations are applicable to WIN: electronic devices, sleeping,
disruptions, failure to comply (not being prepared), etc.

Expectations of Staff
● Staff shall keep a sign in sheet of all students.
● Staff must check WIN passes of arriving students and have them sign-in on log sheet.
● Teachers will not dismiss students from a session prior to the end of it.
● Maintain an environment conducive for learning and making connections with students.
● For future reference, attendance logs should be stored by all staff until the end of the
semester.
● Staff will submit disciplinary referral for students who do not comply with WIN
expectations per the student code of conduct.
● IEPs or 504’s will not be scheduled during this time.
● Anything in which you get paid extra (coaching, clubs, etc.) cannot meet during WIN.

Teachers will receive information regarding policies, procedures, expectations and

resources via Google Docs.

Part 2:
How will WIN work? First of all, there will be no grades or credit for WIN. The first few
weeks of school, WIN time will be dedicated to culture building, setting expectations and PBIS
lessons. Starting after the NWEA (early October), teachers will identify WIN groups based on
NWEA data and teacher assessment. These groups may include remediation of skills or
enrichment for students. When entering their first academic WIN session, students will be pre-
tested on skills and then will be reassessed within 6-8 weeks. At the end of the semester, students
will be post-tested and all groups will be re-evaluated before second semester.

Passes will be allowed for WIN (everyday/Friday). Students are responsible to obtain a pass
from their teacher on or before the day before. You will not be allowed to leave your home WIN
without a pass.
