It was a nice opportunity to have attended this event.

Though our attendance was required, my attention

was caught and was curious about demo day especially the unfamiliar names on the poster who were
guest speakers at the said event. Since it was the first, I had few expectations about the activity. I thought
there will be exhibits or stalls by entrepreneurs whose businesses are aided by technology. And also, I
expected there will be a literal demonstration since it was called ‘demo’ day. So, prior to the event, I have
known that there will be talks from foreign guests and pitching from 5th year students. I thought the
speakers will be having a speech in person. But instead it was via the Google Hangout in the Internet which
I was amazed by how technology could bring people together and be able to connect ideas with each
other even from afar.

I have only participated on the first day of the 2-day event and this was what I observed and learned. I
was able to see how the people behind the event prepared for the live video call since I was able to come
to school before it started. It was my first time to attend to a talk via video call overseas. I was impressed
with the college’s initiative to conduct an activity such as this, to contact professionals to share their
expertise, and to be able to showcase students’ skills and ideas through pitching. The talk was from Mr.
Ikhlaq Sidhu from University of California- Berkeley and has made a remarkable name for himself. I think
everybody in the amphitheater was overwhelmed of his achievements and his patents as well when he
introduced himself.

Mr. Sidhu introduced to us a unique approach to entrepreneurship: the Berkeley method. From what I
grasped from the talk, entrepreneurship and innovation are two words that must go together especially
in our world today. As engineers, we are trained to have a set of skills to provide and innovate solutions
to real-life problems. Aside from entrepreneurship knowledge, it is also important to have the right
mindset and behavior towards this specific kind of venture. Mr. Sidhu specifically pointed out that
coordinating with a team accomplishes more compared to individual interests. It is the interaction with
people that is key to succeeding in this field and that is why this method is proven effective and now
reached a wider scope studied by people (students, researchers, entrepreneurs, etc.) globally.

Moreover, the ideas pitched by the students and graduate students were awe-inspiring knowing
that we will be doing the same the following year. It’s amazing to know that from a simple problem arose
ideas and possible solutions that could lead to a business startup. We have learned about pitching from
observing the participants and from the members of the panel as well. The things we learned from the
techno-preneurship demo day shall be kept in mind and heart and hopefully help us in the near future.
