FOREWORD

Application of this Santos Engineering Standard shall meet requirements of the

Santos Environment Health and Safety Management System – in particular, but not limited
to:

EHSMS 02 - Legal and Other Obligations

EHSMS 06 - Training and Competency

EHSMS 09 - Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control

EHSMS 10 - Contractor and Supplier Management

HSHS 06 - Electrical Safety

Santos Engineering Standards apply to all Santos facilities and are based on
Australian Regulations and Standards. When applied outside of Australia, Local Regulations,
Codes of Practice and Environmental Regulations shall take precedence.

The Santos Engineering Standards are generated, implemented and reviewed in accordance
with the Santos Engineering Management Standards (EMS).

Compliance with Regulations, Engineering Management Standards (1520-002-STN-0002

and 1520-002-STN-0004) and Engineering Standards is compulsory in accordance with
EHSMS 02 and EHSMS 11.2. The current Santos Engineering Standards shall apply unless
specifically stated within individual standards or when directed by the Custodian of the
relevant Standard. Regulations may superimpose retroactive provisions.

Use of this Santos Engineering Standard is MANDATORY. If any part of this Standard
appears inadequate, unsuitable or not cost effective, consult with the Custodian to agree a
suitable solution. This may result in a revision to the Standard.

Deviations from Santos Engineering Standards shall be approved in writing via the Santos
Engineering Standards Waiver process. Approval of waivers is vested in the Santos Chief
Facilities Engineer or his delegate.

1 SCOPE

This design procedure outlines work sequences and method used for selection and design of
pipe supports and identification of supports on isometric and piping plans.
The associated design manual is for use by Piping Design Drafters. It provides necessary
design aids, design parameters and guidelines to enable correct engineered support to be
called up. Design aids and design parameters identify support selection, forces, loads,
length, width and height limitations, permissible loadings, material specifications and so on.
Pipe support standards are divided into three sections:
 Pipe Support Design Manual
 Design Documentation - Engineering Calculations
 Pipe Support Construction / Fabrication Detail Drawings.
For each piping design, a pipe support construction / fabrication drawing package is issued
to Santos construction contractors in the same way as construction specifications are issued.
Pipe support standards, once issued to Contractors, do not need to be included with tender
or construction packages.

2 STANDARDS, CODES OF PRACTICE, REFERENCES

2.1 Dimensions and Units

All lengths are given in mm (millimetres).
All loads and forces are given in kg (kilograms) and kN (kiloNewtons).

2.2 Shoes
Piping Design Drafters shall set required length of standard shoes.
Support shoes shall be centred over support beams unless otherwise indicated.

2.3 Stress Relieved Lines

Support attachments on pipes required to be stress relieved are added prior to stress
relieving. Stub welding attachments shall be at least 150 mm in length.
Attachment details shall be called up and located on piping isometrics except for random
length rack piping where attachments shall be field welded and locally stress relieved.

2.4 Site Run Lines

Lines 40NS and below are site run and supported unless otherwise noted. Support details
are as included in these standards.

2.5 Engineering Calculations

Engineering calculations used in the design of these standards should be referred to where
appropriate when designing special pipe supports and footings.

3 TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS

The pipe support design manual comprises of technical notes below and appendices to this
Design Practice. Supporting detail includes:

Procedure follows the flowchart for pipe support selection in Appendix A.

3.1 Pipe Support Design

3.1.1 Standard Supports

Standard supports are divided into various types – refer pipe support index, section index
and picture index.
Standard supports have many variables of structural section lengths, TOC and TOS
elevations, shoe lengths, dummy support lengths etc., which design drafters shall identify on
pipe support and footing schedules. See Section 3.2 for schedules.
Refer Section 3.3 for example of method for selection of appropriate structural supports and
their concrete footings.

3.1.2 Special Supports

Special supports are those with many variables and have uncommon or complicated
structural shapes that require individual detail drawings.
Special master sheets some with blank dimensional data columns are available for support
types listed below, all other special support drawings can have too many variables to utilise
standard master sheets.
Special Master Drawings:
 M-40-800 Special pipe support footing - bolted - SF1
 M-40-801 Special pipe support footing - sliding plate - SF2
 M-50-800 Special pipe support – SS.
Include drawings for specials in each construction package. - Refer Appendix F.

3.2 Pipe Support Schedules

3.2.1 Pipe Support Schedule

Master Drawing M-50-801 Pipe Support Schedule
This schedule is used to list by area individual supports required for a specific project,
identify support numbers and type, quantity, reference location plans, elevations and unique
dimension variables.
Pipe support design sheets identify with an * information that designers shall include on the
schedule.
Special pipe supports shall also be called up on the pipe support schedule.

3.2.2 Pipe Support Footing Schedule

Master Drawing M-40-802 Pipe Support Footing Schedule
This schedule is used to list by area individual concrete footings required for a specific
project, identify footing numbers and type, quantity, reference location plans and TOC
elevations.
Special footings shall also be called up on the footing schedule.

3.3 Structural and Footing Design

Calculate weight of pipes, valves, fittings, and insulation. Refer Appendix F.
