Advisory opinion 10.2.550

The advisory opinion 10.2.550 of the engineers’ community for construction research
allows the following conditions to be applied on an individual basis without agreement:

• Field size for ceramic cladding to 12 m x 10 m

• With field limitation joints, the insulation boards only need to be cut half way through
• Joint width approx. 30 mm

Preparation for work

The surface to be coated is to be divided up evenly with continuous height markings

according to the format selected.

Here existing fixed lines such as window or door lintels should be taken as points of
reference.

The height markings are to be created surrounding the building.

Application of clinker brick slips

Start by applying the wall surfaces

beginning from the building corners

Apply from top to bottom.

Only pre-apply as much mortar as

can be bonded immediately.
Skin formation must not have the
opportunity to begin.

TC-Meeting 1 March 2011 / D. Keßler / 28

EWIS with rigid coatings
Application of clinker brick slips

The clinker / tiles / natural stones

are to be pressed in firmly using
horizontal sliding motions. No
hollows may be permitted!

Within the division, bond the

uppermost and lowest rows, then
the clinkers lying between these.

Visual measures are generally

adequate for jointing here.

TC-Meeting 1 March 2011 / D. Keßler / 29

The wall surfaces are also applied

using the floating-buttering method.

Joint creation

Joint creation

• There are no clear statements on joint creation for natural stone, ceramic and glass
mosaic.

• It is neither specified where joints should be located nor how they should be realised.

• There are only general indications in the approval.

• Sto-Joint Sealing Tape Lento 25/14-18

• OTTOSEAL S 100
• OTTOSEAL S 70 for natural stone

EWIS with rigid coatings
Principles of joint planning

Joint planning

Joints must be planned. The planning must be carried out by the responsible
architect / planner. The joint planning is not done by the applicator!

Expansion joints from the substrate must be continued in the insulation system.

Joints in EWIS with ceramic and natural stone materials must be continued through
the entire EWIS, down to the substrate. (According to Opinion 10.2.550 it is
sufficient if the insulation boards are cut through at least half way.)

 Maximum field sizes:

Natural stone materials 6m x 6m – if no planner is engaged
Glass mosaic 6m x 6m – if no planner is engaged
Ceramic 12m x 10m bzw. 120 m² - according to Opinion 10.2.550

TC-Meeting 1 March 2011 / D. Keßler / 41

EWIS with rigid coatings
Principles of joint planning

Lateral ratios of the fields approx. 2 : 1

Joint widths with elastic jointing ≥ 25mm
At all outer corners of the building, a vertical joint must be created. The spacing from
joint to corner should correspond to the flange length of the corner tile.
At all internal corners of the building, a vertical joint must be created.
All joints must be created vertically. Joints along the length of the bond are not
permitted.
Tiles may not be bent out at corner openings – risk of cracking!
Should other joint arrangements be used, an expert should be engaged. The costs
are usually borne by the builder / owner.

Joint planning by an expert

Joint planning is not carried out by

our Sto AG Technical Service in
Weizen.
The plans are contracted out
externally.

Duration: approx. 4 to 6 weeks

Costs: approx. 500 to 2000 EUR
(depending on expenditure)

The costs are borne by the builder /

owner.

Failure to observe the required evenness of the substrate

The substrates must be very even, particularly when using larger stone formats.

The evenness tolerance must not exceed 0.5 % of the board length.
(Consider in advance, in tender specification).
