Dear Parents/Guardians:

I am sending this letter to keep you further informed of an incident that occurred at the Oak
Street School on June 5, 2018, in which a student was allegedly in possession of a gun. Due to
the quick response of staff and Administration, the district’s Security Specialist quickly
confiscated the weapon and apprehended the student until Police arrived. The student with the
weapon was immediately removed from the school, and the school resumed a normal schedule.

The Lakewood School District is extremely proud of its students, staff, Security Specialists and
the Lakewood Police Department. All students and staff have been encouraged to “Say
something, if they see something,” and that is what occurred yesterday!

A Crisis Intervention Team, made up of district Guidance Counselors and Professionals has been
made available to students and staff should they want to discuss yesterday’s event.

The Lakewood School District strives to provide a safe learning environment and is reviewing all
aspects of its security program. At this juncture, in addition to all the precautions and
safeguards in place, the district today will be purchasing Metal Detectors and Hand Held Metal
Detector Wands for each of the Elementary Schools (currently they are utilized in the Middle
School and High School).
