1.2 The Front Panel of the HG655b

The front panel of the HG655b provides the following indicators:


z One power indicator: POWER
z One ADSL indicator: DSL
z One Internet indicator: INTERNET
z Four LAN indicators: LAN1, LAN2, LAN3, LAN4
z One WLAN indicator: WLAN
z One WPS indicator: WPS
z One VoIP indicator: VOIP
z One USB indicator: USB

1.3 The Rear Panel of the HG655b

The rear panel of the HG655b provides the following interfaces and buttons:
z One ADSL interface: DSL
z Two RJ-11 phone interfaces: PHONE2, PHONE1
z Four LAN interfaces: LAN4, LAN3, LAN2, LAN1
z One POWER interface: POWER

1.4 The Side Panel of the HG655b


The side panel of the HG655b provides the following interfaces and buttons:

z One USB interface:


z One WPS button: WPS
z One WLAN button: WLAN
z One ON/OFF button: ON/OFF

2 Installation Guide
To connect the cables for installing the HG655b, do as follows:

2.1 Connecting the HG655b to the Fixed Network
Step 1 Connect the telephone jack on the wall to the LINE interface on the splitter
with a telephone line. Connect the telephone to the PHONE interface on the
splitter with a telephone line.

Step 2 Connect the DSL interface on the HG655b to the MODEM interface on the
splitter with a telephone line.

2.2 Connecting telephones to the HG655b


Connect a telephone to the PHONE1 or PHONE2 interface of the HG655b. The
connection methods are as follows:

z If you have two VoIP numbers, you can connect two telephones to the PHONE1
and PHONE2 interfaces respectively.
z If you have no VoIP number and use only the PSTN function, then connect the
telephone to the PHONE interface through splitter, refer to 2.1 Connecting the
HG655b to the Fixed Network.

2.3 Connecting the PC to the HG655b

Connect Ethernet interface on the computer to any of the four LAN interfaces on the
rear panel of HG655b with an Ethernet cable.

2.4 Supplying Power to the HG655b
Connect the power adapter to the power interface on the back of the HG655b and plug
the power adapter into a wall outlet.

After you power on the HG655b, the DSL indicator blinks (for less than three
minutes), which indicates that the HG655b is being activated. After the DSL
indicator stops blinking, the POWER and DSL indicators turn solid on, which
indicates that the HG655b is working properly.

3 Configuring the HG655b
You can access the Internet by use the following two methods:
z Using the Embedded PPP Dial-Up Software of the HG655b to Get Online
z Using the PPP Dial-Up Software of the Computer to Get Online
Please use the parameters provided by your internet service provider (ISP) for
configuration. If the configuration is wrong, you will not be able to access the
Internet.

Using the Embedded PPP Dial-Up Software of the


HG655b to Get Online
Step 1 Configure the HG655b to enable the embedded dial-up function
1. Connect the HG655b with your computer by using the Ethernet cable.
2. Configure the IP address of your computer to be in the same network
segment as the HG655b. The default LAN IP address and subnet mask of
the HG655b is 192.168.1.1 and 255.255.255.0.
3. Start Internet Explorer on your computer and enter the http://192.168.1.1
in the address bar, and then press Enter.
4. The Login dialog box is displayed.
5. Enter the administrator name (admin by default) and password (admin
by default) in the Login dialog box, and then click OK.
Step 2 Enable the embedded dial-up function
1. In the navigation tree on the left of the Web-based configuration utility,
choose Basic > WAN.
2. Click New.
3. Select Enable check box for WAN connection.
4. Select INTERNET from the Service list drop-down combo box.
5. Select Route from the Connection mode drop-down combo box.
6. Select PPPoE option button for Connection type.
7. Select Enable check box for NAT.
8. Enter the user name and password that are provided by the network
operator in the User name and Password text boxes, and keep the default
settings of other parameters.
9. Click Submit to save the settings.
After you complete the preceding settings, you can surf the Internet.

If the embedded dial-up function of the HG655b is enabled, you need to power off
the HG655b when you do not want to access the Internet. Otherwise, the ISP may
calculate the fee for accessing the Internet even if you have powered off your
computer.

Using the PPP Dial-Up Software of the Computer to Get


Online
Step 1 Configure the HG655b to work in the bridge mode
For details, refer to the procedure for enabling the embedded dial-up function described
in Step 2 in section "Using the Embedded PPP Dial-Up Software of the HG655b to Get
Online." The only difference is to select the Bridge mode not the Routing mode from
the Connection mode drop-down combo box.
Step 2 Configure your computer
The PPP dial-up software is installed in your computer, and then you can get online.
The Windows XP (Professional) operating system has an embedded PPPoE dial-up
software. To set up the dial-up connection in Windows XP system, do as follows:
1. Choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications >
Network Connections.
2. Click Create a new connection in the displayed page.
3. Click Next in the New Connection Wizard dialog box.
4. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
5. Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
6. Select Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user
name and password and click Next.
7. Enter the name of the dial-up connection (you can enter the name as you
like). Then click Next.
8. Select Anyone's use or My use only and click Next.
9. Enter the user name and password. Then click Next.
10. Click Finish.

4 Configuring the Wireless Network


Connection
If a wireless network adapter is installed on your computer, you can connect your
computer to the HG655b through a wireless connection.

There are two methods to configure the wireless network connection to enable the
Wi-Fi function of the HG655b:

Configuring the Wireless Connection by the Web Page


To configure the wireless network connection by configuring the web page, do as
follows:
Step 1 Set the wireless network name and access password of the HG655b (taking
the authentication type WPA-PSK as an example):
1. Log in to the Web-based configuration utility.
2. In the navigation tree on the left, choose Basic > LAN.
3. Select WLAN.
4. Select the Enable WLAN option button.
5. Enter a wireless network name in the SSID text box.
6. Select WPA-PSK from the Security drop-down combo box.
7. Enter an access password in the WPA pre-shared Key text box.
8. Select TKIP from the WPA encryption drop-down combo box, and
keep the default settings of other parameters.
9. Click Submit to save the settings.
Step 2 Configure the wireless network connection on your computer (taking the
Windows XP operating system as an example):
1. Choose Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications >
Network Connections.
2. In the Network Connections window, right-click Wireless Network
Connection to display a shortcut menu, and then select View Available
Wireless Networks from the shortcut menu.
3. Select the wireless network that is configured in Step 1 from the wireless
network list, and then click Connect in the lower right corner of the
window.
4. In the displayed dialog box, enter the access password that is preset in
Step 1, and then click Connect.
After the password is verified, Connected appears on the icon of the wireless network
in the wireless network list, which indicates that your computer is connected to the
HG655b through wireless connection.

Configuring the Wireless Connection by the buttons


If the wireless network adapter on your conputer can support the WPS function, you
can connect your computer to the HG655b wirelessly as follows:
Step 1 Press the WLAN button on the side panel of the HG655b and hold it for more
than two seconds.

Step 2 Press the WPS button on the side panel. The WPS negotiation function is then
enabled.
Step 3 Enable the WPS negotiation function of the wireless network adapter within 2
minutes.
After you install a wireless network adapter on your PC and enable the WPS
negotiation function, the wireless data card automatically searches for an available
wireless network and connect to the wireless network automatically.

Step 4 Wait for a few seconds, and then you can see the Wi-Fi indicator
turning red permanently on the front panel of the HG655b and the wireless
icon on the corner to the right of the task bar of the PC.
