MAIN AIMS
To introduce the design principles of noise control, fire safety, public health and vertical transportation in
buildings.

LEARNING OUTCOMES TO BE ASSESSED

This Modular Block provides opportunities for students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding (K) cognitive
(thinking) skills (C) and other skill s and attributes (S) in the following areas:

Categories (K, C , S) A Knowledge and Understanding

K  Use formulae to perform noise related calculations inside and outside buildings
 Propose suitable fire safety design solutions for buildings
 Propose suitable drainage design solutions for buildings
 Propose suitable vertical transportation design solutions for buildings

B Cognitive (thinking) Skills

C  Evaluate the implications of noise and fire safety in the built environment

C Other Skills and Attributes (Practical/Professional/Transferable)

S  Present results in a structured written report.
INDICATIVE CONTENT:

Noise control: sound propagation, the decibel scale, sound power levels, octave and analysis, the ear and
hearing, quantifying loudness, noise annoyance, noise standards, legal aspects, controlling noise outside
buildings, room noise levels, sound transmission through partitions, fan noise, ductwork attenuation.
Fire safety: nature of fire, fire and smoke spread within buildings, fire detection and suppression and implications
for building services, current trends in fire safety.
Public health: sanitary plumbing (types of systems, discharge pipes and stacks, pipe sizing and materials),
sanitary accommodation (layout, ventilation, disabled provisions), rainwater (design rate, sizing of gutters, pipes
and outlets, materials).
Vertical transportation: Lift traffic analysis, lift components, safety and standards, lift arrangement, drive
systems, operation and control.

TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES AND METHDS USED TO ENABLE THE ACHIEVEMENT OF
LEARNING OUTCOMES: these might include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practicals, workshops, laboratories,
distance learning, projects, formative assessment or other methods (please specify)

Full-time students:
A mixture of lectures and seminars are employed, accompanied by self-directed reading materials

Distance Learning students:

Self-study course materials are used. Self-assessment questions solutions are provided. Assignment progress is
discussed, most commonly by email.

CONTACT HOURS
Average learning hours per week: 4.5 (all students) of which 1.5 hours are student/tutor contact hours per week
(FT students only)

Number of hours
Scheduled Contact Hours 36 hours

NB: This includes tutorials, lectures, workshops etc

Independent Study Hours 114 hours

Placement study hours n/a

NB: Only applicable if this is a placement module

TOTAL OVERALL STUDENT LEARNING HOURS 150 hours

NB: This must add up to the credit value of the module multiplied by
10. i.e. 20 credits = 200 hours
