1. Acoustic Ground Discrimination System (AGDS)

Function: 1) Used for commercial and research applications.

2) To detect different substrata by their acoustic reflectance properties.

 2. DO (Dissolved Oxygen) Sensor

Company: Milwaukee

Model: SM600 DO Meter

Function: 1) Used to measure the amount of oxygen that is in dissolved water, by unit

volume.

2) Essential measurement parameter in aerobic bioreactors

  Optical DO Sensor

Company: VSI Incorporated

Model: Pro O DO

Function: 1) to detect the partial pressure of oxygen in the environment, and do so via a

fluorescence phase-shift method.

 3. pH Sensor

Company: HACH

Model: sesION PH1

Function: 1) used to measure hydrogen-ion activity (acidity or alkalinity) in solution.

Fundamentally, a pH meter consists of a voltmeter attached to a pH-responsive

electrode and a reference (unvarying) electrode.

 4. i) Plankton Net

Function: 1) Used to collect planktonic organisms, of nearly any size, intact. Towed by a

research vessel, Plankton Nets have a long funnel shape that allows them to catch

differently sized plankton simply by changing the mesh size of the net.
 ii) Kitahara Net

Model: Kitahara Qualitative Net

Function: 1) Used for sampling of the vertical distribution of zooplankton nets of up to 50 m

and for sampling of mesoplankton in coastal waters.

 iii) Bongo Net

Function: 1) Determine the abundance and distribution of plankton.

2) Study the development, growth, behaviour, food requirements and mortality of

the early stages as related to environmental factors.

3) Provide a better understanding of oceanic ecology and clarify fish systematics..

4) Trace fluctuations in spawning stocks by estimating the abundance of their

eggs and young larvae.

5) Forecast year-class strength on the basis of the abundance of older larvae.

6) Estimate abundance of a stock based on its spawning production.

7) Discriminate between stocks of the same species.

 5. Benthic Dredge

Function: For collecting biological and/or mineralogical samples with a 20 x 40 cm opening

 6. PT (Pressure and Temperature) Sensor

Model: Aqualogger 520

Function: 1) Used for control and monitoring in thousands of everyday applications.

2) Pressure sensors can also be used to indirectly measure other variables such as

fluid/gas flow, speed, water level, and altitude.

 7. Grab Sampler

Model: Ekman Grabs

Function: 1) Used for sampling in soft sediments that is free from debris and plant growth.

2) A disturbed sample is taken from very soft top layers and spring loaded jaws

prevent loss of material as long as there are no small stones or stalks to prevent

closure.

Function: 1) Used surface sampler for river and lake beds, giving you a quick indication of

sediment type.
 9. Russian Corer

Function: 1) Used for sampling at different depths in sediment and wet soils, including

below the groundwater level.

2) To drive the sampler to any point in the sediment profile in the closed (empty)

position.
 10. Van Dorn Water Sampler

Model: AISI 316 stainless steel.

Function: 1) Used for taking water samples near the bottom in lakes, streams, or in stratified

water bodies.
  Niskin Water Sampler

Function: 1) Used for studying plankton or measuring many physical characteristics such as

salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrient concentrations (such as phosphate, nitrate and

nitrite), and dissolved organic and inorganic carbon.

 11. CTD (Conductivity, Temperature and Depth) Sensor

effect of sound waves scattered back from particles within the water column.
