Week 1 Self Assessment for writing 39c

It’s the first week of the quarter. Writing 39C is a challenge for me because I heard that

the learning content will be very difficult.

I took the A and B class really long time ago. It might be difficult for me to recall all the

things I learned but I do remember the professors’ name of those course.

The first thing I learned was MLA format. Professor spent 1 or more class teaching us the

format (20C and 39A). The font should be Times New Roman, the font size should be 12, the

margin should be normal, double spacing should be used throughout the paper… When I first got

in touch with the format, I made a lot of mistakes when applying them. Then my professor

corrected the mistakes again and again until I remembered the correct format. Now, I already

used to using MLA format when write my paper. It’s the most basic skill I learned in writing

courses.

The most impressive word in my brain is “rhetoric” when I took 39B. From the start of

the class until the end, professor Maureen emphasized “rhetoric” a thousand times. I learned that

writing include 3 factors: audience, writer and purpose. There are 3 rhetoric appeals: logos,

pathos and ethos. Each assignment included genre requirement. The start of the class was fun.

She played an insurance advertisement whose genre is thriller. Then we started to talk about the

factors in thriller that made us scared. I learned genre in an interesting way.

My writing strength is clear organization. Before I start my paper, I’ll always write down

an outline. My weakness is the ability of analysis. When I try to solve a problem, I don’t know

which methods is the most appropriate one.
