Foreword
This document prEN 10138-2 has been prepared by Technical Committee ECISS/TC 19 “Concrete
reinforcing and prestressing steels - Properties, dimensions, tolerances and specific tests”, the secretariat of
which is held by DIN.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).
For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.
This European Standard consists of the following parts, under the general title Prestressing steels:
Part 2: Wire
Part 3: Strand
Part 4: Bar
3
prEN 10138-2:2004 (E)
1 Scope
This Part of this European Standard specifies specific requirements for technical (strength) classes of stress
relieved cold drawn high tensile steel wire, either plain or indented.
It is applicable to wire which has been straightened and stress relieved and then supplied in the form of coils
or in bundles of cut lengths from the same steel heat.
2 Normative references
This European Standard incorporates by dated and undated reference, provisions from other publications.
The normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications are listed
hereafter. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of the publications apply to
this European Standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the
latest edition of the publication referred to applies (including amendments).
EN 10016-2, Non alloy steel rod for drawing and/or cold rolling — Part 2: : Specific requirements for general
purposes rod.
EN 10016-4, Non alloy steel rod for drawing and/or cold rolling — Part 4: Specific requirements for rod for
special applications
EN 10027-1, Designation system for steels — Part 1: Steel names; principal symbols.
EN ISO 15630-3, Steel for the reinforcement and prestressing of concrete — Test methods —
Part 3: Prestressing steels (ISO 15630-3:2002).
For the purposes of this part of this European Standard the terms and definitions given in prEN 10138-1 and
the following apply.
3.1
indentation length, l
length of individual indentations measured in the direction of the wire axis
3.2
indentation depth, a
maximum depth of individual indentations measured radially from wire surface
3.3
indentation spacing, c
distance between the centre of two successive indentations measured (or taken) in the direction of the wire
axis (see Figures 1and 2)

4 Symbols
The symbols used in this Part of this European Standard and the corresponding designations are given in
Table 1.

5 Designation
5.1 For the steel grades covered by this Part of this European Standard the steel names shall be allocated
in accordance with EN 10027-1 and CR 10260; the steel numbers shall be allocated in accordance with
EN 10027-2.

6 Manufacture
6.1 General
The wire shall be manufactured from wire rod in accordance with EN 10016-2 or 4, from steel in accordance
with prEN 10138-1.
6
prEN 10138-2:2004 (E)
For indented wire, the dimensions of the indentations shall be in accordance with either Table 2 and Figure 1
or Table 3. For wire with indentations of Type 1,one line of indentations shall be at a contrary angle to the
others.
The nominal depth of indents shall be chosen within the limits given in Table 2 or 3.
NOTE 1 Other types of indentation may be presented but should be fully specified in a similar manner to Table 2 and
Figure 1 by the producer and accepted by the purchaser.

NOTE 2 This alternative indent type T2 is used where aggregates dictate that transmission length is required to be
slightly longer than that produced by the indent pattern specified in Figure 1. Indents on one side should be midway
between the indent positions on the opposite face. (see Figure 2)

7 Requirements
7.1 General
The technical classes covered by this Part of this European Standard shall possess nominal and specified
properties as specified in Tables 4 and 5.
Where the diameter measurements on the plain round wire show an ovality ≤ 0,01 d (where d is the nominal
wire diameter), no checks by weighing shall be necessary. In this case the average diameter [the average of
the diameters measured in two perpendicular directions (one of which shall be the maximum diameter found
by inspection)] shall be equal to the nominal diameter with a tolerance of ± 1%.
The nominal diameter of indented wire is the nominal diameter of plain wire having the same cross-sectional
area.

prEN 10138-2:2004 (E)
7.3.1 General
7.3.2 Straightness
Straightness shall be determined in accordance with EN ISO 15630-3. The maximum bow height from a base
line 1 m in length, measured from the inside of the curve, shall be not greater than 25 mm for all wire
diameters.
NOTE Alternative agreements on straightness including for cut lengths using the method in EN ISO 15630-3 can be
agreed between producer and purchaser at the time of ordering.
