Video Summary:
Because art has no finish line, it's easy to become such a perfectionist that you drag a project on
for months. As a result, you become reluctant to start anything new, due to the committment it
takes. So agree to a set deadline (I recommend one week), then stick to it.
We often think that we need a large block of time to do anything meaningful (like a weekend of
no interruptions), but they rarely ever pan out. Be like JK Rowling, who wrote the first Harry
Potter book while raising a child at home, writing at any spare moment. Put in small amounts of
time everyday and you'll make a lot more progress than someone waiting for large block of time.
I've adapted this trick from Rick Ruben who asked rappers with writers block to write just one
word of their song they'd been struggling to write. The next day they'd have the entire song
completed. Because the hardest part is actually starting. Once you start, it's easy. So if you can
agree to do something extremely small (like click just one thing) you'll have a much higher
chance of forming a habit.

Holy smokes, this video is worth pure gold. I really thought Iam kind of alone with this, great to
hear that other creative people or generally people who always want to learn something new
and improve "suffer" of this aswell. Great video, Iam not even interested in Blender but the
general meaning of this video is quite good.
------------------------------------------------------
Was your only resource to get to those tips the first book you mentioned or do you have any
other resources about this aswell? Really want to sharpen my mind about this topic!
Best Regards!

I am currently doing a project, which includes blender, but is not exclusive to, and i completely
relate to what Andrew says, i have a very big struggle starting to work on it, but as soon as i start,
i can't stop, i will carry on for hours on end. When he said that you get 4x "more happiness" from
doing your hobby than instant gratification, i have realized I have been a lot happier lately.

grgbpm basically everyone is thrightened to start. It usually seems like the big leap thing. once u
start it gets much easier. So instead of beginning let's say an essay while thinking that you have a
whole big essay to write, make a objective for yourself just to write one word, then when u do
same thing for ex. every morning, it starts getting easier

I agree. The beginning is the hardest. Before I sit down to draw I'm filled with self loathing (for
not turning off my distractions sooner) and doubt that my work will ever look like those I admire;
but when I do manage to get something down, even just a copy, I tend to forget some of that
and just work...
...till my attention drifts I'm back to being distracted for another week or three. (I wish he'd
made a point of perseverance)

Yes, this is a great format. Here is a question that you might use in the future. A big thing I get
caught up in is how to do things in an exact way. I learned SketchUp first, and it was easy to feel
comfortable that I was putting an object EXACTLY on the ground. or making something EXACTLY
the right size, and rotated just right, making sure no surface is hidden and snaps to other objects.
While this is good in engineering (my day job), it prevents me from being creative, exploring, or
getting things done. Any suggestions?

I use Blender and Sketchup too, and finally those tools are oriented for 2 different uses. I
personally prefer modeling in Sketchup because of its EXACT way of modeling. But Blender is
much more flexible when it comes to organic modeling. Finally, it's like comparing 2 hammers.
One is light and can be used at the top of a scale in one hand just for small ties. The second is
much more heavy, with a long handle and can be used to drive a pole into the ground. You
would not try to use one in place of the other, no? So is the same for software.
It's just a matter of using the right tool for the right task.

Another idea is if anybody is too busy to learn Blender, then try another software. That's what I
did. I now use Wings 3D and Anim8tor and both software programs are great, they're free too,
they're more intuitive and they got me to building what I needed within a few minutes. I found
those two programs and haven't looked back since.

Well, with what you're doing, there's a limit that you'll approach. If you get wrapped up in
modeling and texturing, eventually you'll realize you'll have to start replacing models and
readjusting scripts for the new models and now you realize you have to make a bunch of new
optimizations, but then you test your game and realize that that one thing in this level needs to
be switched out with an appropriate model, and so back into blender you go, and you might
even find that when you finish the second level, all of the assets from the first level are looking
bad, and so you go back to refine them, and so on and so forth. In a case where hobbies are not
connected, one day promise your time to blender, the next promise your time, to another hobby
and so forth

He says in his "7 habits of a highly effective artist" video to practice everyday, but what you
practice, could be the difference from having to have blender open and not. He also says that
you should also rest. So why not take a break and just look at what some other people are doing
and practice thinking about how they would have made it? Heck, look at some 2D stuff, you
might find inspiration in this way. I personally have all of my creation as my desktop backgrounds
so that whenever I feel stuck, I just stop and watch the background change and I remember how
many times I got stuck, and somehow thought of something and pushed through, whilst
listening to some of my favorite sound tracks.

Great video. I do have a question myself. I've been wanting to get into 3d modeling, specifically I
love the low-poly art style that was used in Megaman Legends. Only thing that has kept me away
is there seems to be a significant amount of terminology and jargon to learn that I personally
find intimidating. How should I go about tackling this and, additionally, do you have any guides
or recommendations on how one would go about doing the low-poly style I mentioned
previously? Thank you for your time, keep up the great work. :)
1
François Ozenne
François Ozenne

クルセイダークマ I have no experience in 3d so here are my two cents :
I think one of the way is to do a "normal" 3d model and then use a plugin/tool to reduce the
number of polys. Then you can edit the nodes for a fine control over your work. At least that's
how you do it in photoshop/illustrator.
You could do it in one go but it would be hard (at least as a beginner) to position the points
correctly and not deform the shape.

Hey, Blender Guru!
I love your videos! You are a great teacher!
I'd really like to learn drawing and modeling, watched some great tutorials. But I feel like I don't
have anything that would inspire me to draw or to model.
I really want to create something, but I just don't know what exactly. Feel like my head is just
empty.
I learned the basics of Blender, however, I can not design anything better than cups or tables.
Every time I design something, I mess it up and I give up. Should I give up, start something else
and be happy that maybe I can do that one or keep trying and feel bad that I can't do it? Because
you know motivation is important. Thanks a lot if you answer my question?

Then move to the next one.

as a general rule of thumb, you don't want to do it just like that. on average your concentration
peaks and begins to dip drastically at the 20 min mark, so you'd want to do 30mins blender, 30
mins brain rotting youtube, 30mins after effects, 30 mins playing overwatch, etc. to make sure
your concentration and thence retention of information is kept optimal. couple that with the
secret of learning: learn something, do it again 6 hours later, do it again 6 days later. this will
permanently lodge the information in your brain and this should be taught day 1 of school but
noooo you gotta take a teacher training course to learn it ¬_¬ or have your maths teacher in high
school go on a rant about why he made homework due for the next day every class because of
this, like I did

hurt anyone as long as you do it gradually every version :)

It really depends on what is changing, if it is worth the time and effort people will do it,
especially if there are plenty of tutorials to follow to speed up the learning curve. Applications
are forever changing and improving and it does suck up a lot of effort to keep up while still trying
to create art.

I don't think the problem of learning blender is that people are too busy, I think that the problem
is blenders interface is pure crap, unfocused, convoluted. To put it simply, blender has too many
features for its own good, and while that makes it a powerful tool, it keeps it from simplifying
things, which can actually make some powerful functions obscure and thus seldom used if at all
anyways. I would actually consider myself as more than intermediate in my skill level in 3D
modelling and rendering experience. But blender is just an absolute pain to use. I've
downloaded it more than a dozen times over the years and tried to pick it up and I always end
up just uninstalling it. And this comes from someone who is well versed in several 3D programs.
What blender needs is a complete interface overhaul.

You should add a little window in the corner with the Blender UI, just like a joke haha/ Also I
started learning Blender(FINALLY!) with your videos I have a list with other channels that offer
like low poly stuff, cycles rendering, etc etc and I'm finally lerning because I want to make a game
this year(even if it's crap!(I will say is abandoned art!!)). I even tried to model myself a karambit
knife and wasn't perfect but at least was close to it, even tried some textures from poliigon for
the steel.

Bojan Babic Congratulations! I have a similar goal. This channel is particularly helpful for learning
because he gives you the knowledge you'll need to do something on your own. I've learned that
with most other tutorials, they walk you through what to do without explaining why or what
details may need special attention. I'm usually left clueless on how to apply that knowledge to
my own renders in the future. Good luck with your video game!

Yeah it's basically that, most of tutorials repeat themselves sure but repeating something doesn't
explain it. Even if he fails or forgets something in this channel there's always someone in the
comments adding that info so you can learn, for example with the donuts model I had a problem
with changin sizes and someone in the comments already gave the answer to that. Good luck
with your goal too!

Setting a predetermined time works. Did that a few days ago then came across this video. At my
age, it's good to learn that my 3D teacher is a wise soul :-)

Wow, what a great response to an almost silly question! Your 7 habbits... presentation was also a
blast. The thing is, both are useful not only for artists! I myself am three times former Blender
beginner ;D Interestingly enough, the most important thing I have learned the last time was
what great difference it made for me to declutter the interface by removing unnecessary panels
and increasing the font size by almost 200% No, I don't have poor eyesight. The font size was just
ridiculous on my 128 ppi display.
